  • Poor Crazy Legs, was out of air after he got Banjo on the truck. Cute little film, should have got another short.

  • aww Banjo :')

  • this is adorable! so cute!

  • Pinocchio after 39 years 1940-1979

    Bambi after 37 years 1942-1979

    Banjo the Woodpile Cat

  • I liked the show, but I could see so much from All Dogs Go To Heaven, American Tail, Land Before Time, and Secret of NHIM that is was crazy! Like a strange mish mash of story and animation from all of those movies

  • banjo: im home

    dad: good...now wheres that switch?

    banjo: O_O

  • @omegasXLR lol XD

  • Just got through this, and it was quite a fun 30 minute film. It didn't feel dull like many things I watch end up feeling... I actually forgot what time it is. Haha. I'm 16, and discovered this from a review on thatguywiththeglasses.

  • yeah, that worked, idiot/

  • disney stole pieces from here for bambi and pinocchio,

    but thats just my theory

  • @uchihasi Yeah? Too bad Banjo the Woodpile Cat came out 40 years after both Bambi and Pinocchio were made. Otherwise, your theory would be plausible.

  • Music and lyrics by Don Bluth

Jesus, this guy a talent mutant or what?

  • Thanks for posting this! <3

  • So much meaning and emotion.

  • what a sec don is about a year older then that BTTF-character george mcfly in which marty's dad was born in 1938 so can't don bluth make a special appearance in back to the future: the game season 2? I saw a cliffhanger in episode 5.

  • aww! this was pretty short, but very cute! :)

  • This was made in don bluth's garage! :)

  • I love the Don Bluth movies. Please say you'll upload the rest of the movies.

  • I've been going through a big box of Videos and found this, but my VCR wasn't working! Thanks heaps for letting me live my childhood again!

  • HE MADE IT HOME!! :D

  • @fujiwaranosai25

Then what's going to happen next? Is his father going to scold him for running away from home and possibly beat him with a switch like what we thought he was going to do in the beginning?

  • @pixargod I think they are gonna be so relived that their son is back and talk about how he should never scare them like that again and in the end be grateful he is ok. such as children's movies go.

  • i thought so to aristocrats pre curser. but mum and dad dont care. surely theres another story there

  • Thanks for uploading this! It was cute! I love Don Bluth's stuff!

  • Don Bluth did a great job!

  • the female singing voice in the back truly bring backs memories it makes me feel so calm and relaxed :3 thanks for uploadin :3

  • Aw, Banjo is such a sweet story. I remember I watched this on VHS when I was a kid, but I had forgotten most of it. I still really love Don Bluth's animation.

  • Okay if I showed up after disappearing for two days my dad would have whipped me TWICE as hard>.<

  • This is why I love YouTube.

Finding old classics that I can cannot locate any other way.

*why can't there be a TV channel that plays all these old movies* D:

  • @FrailShiver well disney cinemagic does, only thing is... its just disney films

  • @FrailShiver If I had my way, I would make a channel that only shows classic stuff like this and wouldn't show Hannah Montana crap.

  • Oh why are the good old movies I like almost always sad..., it would be great if the others would visit him^^

  • Comment removed

  • I don't believe I've seen any cats with their tongues lolling out like in this movie

  • d'aww he really made it back!! :D grats, Banjo!!

  • Banjo seriously reminds me of that kid in The Rescuers!

  • @MrsPacar He animated that kid in the rescuers. Don Bluth did work on a few Disney Films, but I don't remember which ones if any he was credited on.

  • @ZoloLover Fox and the Hound was one of them

  • @ZoloLover Don Bluth didn't animate the kid from The Rescuers, but John Pomeroy did.

  • Hey that sceen from 2:18 is from Aristrocats!

  • @AWolfsMoon

Don Bluth did used to work for Disney afterall.

  • Good stuff, and a pretty small animation crew *.*

  • it made me laugh when he said he's goin down to payson. I had the same problem, had to figure out how to get back to Payson after I got lost in Salt Lake.

  • The place they're sleeping in (2:48) looks like same home in All Dogs go to Heaven.

    Thanks for the upload.

  • I prefer this little kitty so much more than Oliver from Oliver and Company. Hah.

  • Now I see why they call him Crazy Legs! ^^

  • I never seen this but after watching it on youtube, I love it already. It's so cute, makes me wanna give Banjo rub on the head and tickle his stomach.

  • I've seen what happens after a dog catches a cat like that.......its not pretty, its very sad

  • Aww! What a sweet movie!

  • I especially like how Crazy's hat tends to appear out of nowhere like in 5:30 - 5:37

  • it's like that mysterious back pocket that cartoon animals have, right?

  • hah, indeed. It never stops amusing me ;D

  • LoL

  • y does crazy have such a huge lower lip O.O

  • African American stereotype, m'dear.

  • So he was going to get a switching for jumping off a chicken coop, and yet he runs away from home and isn't reprimanded at all? I'd say running away from home is much worse!

  • the trip and experiences he went through is his repremanding

  • That was a long time I saw this film, I could't understand then I was youung beacuse I'm from Sweden and it was no dub or subtitle in Swedish, Now I understand this film. It is a very pretty good film.

  • Did his parents even Worry that he was gone ? thats all thats bugging me XD

  • Very nice one. Thanks for posting.

  • I think I've seen this film before when I was really young, but can't remember when.

Don Bluth is awesome, plain and simple. :)

  • They both had their moments.

  • I love how everything moves like its being shot out of a canon in a Don Bluth film.

  • This is like the Aristocrats combined with American Tail

  • @IoSonoUomo u mean aristocats

  • @carmasoaker yeah, sorry.

  • @IoSonoUomo

mixed with Oliver and company... the rain and dog scenes

  • @IoSonoUomo you're right it is.

  • Cute film. Tho Banjo's family looks like the Aristocats.

  • Bluth invents, Disney rips off.

  • True Dat

  • If I'm not mistaken, Don Bluth helped animate the Aristocats.

  • Salut j'aimerai vraiment savoir qu'elle est le titre de la chanson qu'on entend au début de la vidéo JE VOUS EN SUPPLIE !

Hello I shall really like knowing that it is the title of the song which we hear at the beginning of the video I BEG IT TO YOU!

  • The most realistic cat behavior ever!~! Just look at the tail! I mean I owned a cat and I know!

  • Dude, there was nothing realistic in that, and owning a cat doesn't make you a behavioral expert.

  • Does eating them makes you an expert??????????????

  • What the... and that is supposed to mean what, exactly? Seriously, what the hell?

  • You man need to go to comedy school.

  • I don't know what you're talking about. I eat cats all the time.

  • Don't forget Heintz!!!

  • ...robin hood

  • that's a real Animated Movie altough i don't know this but the style of drawing! The new Animation are so stupid! (Some of them, of couse ;D)

i miss the old Cartoons T^T

  • I love all Don Bluth films! This is so magical!

But seriously, did it seem strange to you guys that Banjo's family were having a good time right before they say him?Didn't they ever miss him? I mean, really! The expression on their faces was like 'Oh hey it's you again! How's life?' and thats all he gets... after all he's been through!

  • I was thinking the same thing XD thats the only thing that irked me XD he should have stayed with the other cats LOL

  • I finally finished watching this whole movie a few seconds ago, and I gotta say...... it was really cute! Thanks for sharing it! ^_^

  • The story struck me as pretty cliche and predictable but the animation was beautiful and the characters really cute. Thanks for posting it.

  • Yea I think it was a way to demonstrate various animation techniques.

  • The story is not cliche! I remember this from when I was 5 years old, the story and animation is a masterpiece,

  • I agree with you entirely. Cliche and predictable story with good animation.

  • What did you expect? It's a kid's movie!

  • that comment urks me so much.

  • I just found out about this when I heard it was released on the iPhone and turned into a Dragon's Lair-like game, I watched the cartoon to see the differences and...

The game takes out the middle musical section... :|

  • i loved this movie and the funny thing is that i stil have this on VHS

    tks for sharing

  • Crazy Legs is so cute! I wish he were my cat. :)

  • I was kind of expecting the father cat to be like, "I believe you still owe me a swtich, son."

  • Yep, I thought that as well. In the audio commentary for this film on the 2-disc DVD (which you can buy on Amazon Marketplace) Don Bluth even remarked something like, "Well, Banjo's home and his parents are not at all worried! Where've you been? Quick, cut to the credits!"

  • What a great short! I truly respect Don Bluth for being so dedicated to his craft that he took every ounce of free time he had to put into this film. The quality of it really shows!

I've honestly never seen this show before in my life, but I've always loved Don Bluth films and I'm excited to now know what it took for him to make a name for himself. I believe that this short is truly one of his greatest achievements!

    Don Bluth Films Forever!!!

  • Yes he definitely is one of the greatest animators of the 20th century.

  • aww what a wonderful story. cutest semi short story i ever did see. :D

  • Wow, that was... abrupt.

Which is too bad because I was enjoying Banjo's face-melting adorableness.

  • That was a joy to watch :) A bit simple of a story, but I understand it was made for kids. However, the animation and art were really fun to watch! It was great getting to see more of Don Bluth's work

  • The fact that the lady cats don't have ears really bothers me for some reason oO;

Otherwise I really enjoyed this little film ^^ And I love the lip-synching and the character movement <3 Don Bluth & Co really are the masters of animation.

  • Did you ever stop to think that that was the animators conscious decision?

Everyone has their own style. I think the fact that their human-like qualities add character to the movie visually.

Lets see YOU make a 30 minute movie with minimal use of computers.

  • have you ever animated? Do you know anything about the process or the fact that they did this all at night while working countless hours during the day at disney?

Do you have any idea what it takes to make an animated feature of this caliber, this length?

Get back to me when you have a degree in animation-

    like I do.

  • @illtemperedsnail many people like him cannot even begin to appreciate great work that is animation. He would probably break down and cry within the first 24 frames.

  • @pkring It's a freaking cartoon. Cats DON'T TALK! Ever seen Sylvester the cat? Does he move or do ANYTHING like a cat? Enjoy or don't watch.

  • Prking, I find it rather sad that all you do is troll lovable animated segments on Youtube. Seriously, nobody forced you to watch it, and we all enjoy it, it's not your life's mission to make us all hate somethiing just because YOU do. Twatwaffle.

  • @pkring Then don't watch it. Let's see you make something like this.

  • the Dvd is out now, I just ordered it

  • Great news for Banjo fans: just read on Don Bluth's website they're releasing a 2-disc Special Edition DVD of this film. An option of matted widescreen and open-matte fullscreen plus 90 minutes of bonus features (which I hope will not be crammed with pointless games like The Secret of NIMH!). It's supposed to be coming out around the end of January and, being a UK resident, it's next on my import list. =D

  • Comment removed

  • 0:19, Banjo look like Tony Toponi from an american tail

  • guys, it's only about 26 minutes!

  • Then why did you watch it?

  • i grew up on Don Bluth, i had no idea they were all by the same guy until last year when i noticed "the Pebble and the Penguin" and "Thumblina" had the same name on them, then i went realized at the credits of

"Rock-a-doodle", "Troll in central Park", "Secret of Nimh", "Anastasia" and some other movie i've always enjoyed were also Don Bluth, the conclusion, ive been a Don Bluth fan literally all my life and didn't know it.

by the way, did he do "We're Back!"?

  • If you mean "We're Back! A Dinosaur Story", that was directed by Phil Nibbelink and Simon Wells, and produced by several people, including Spielberg.

    I like that movie, too.

  • Thanks a lot for posting. Just read about Banjo on wikipedia never heard of it before. I believe they did an amazing job with the animation but could you have expeceted something different from a project, animator legends from Disney spent their freetime with^^.

  • You can totally see Robin Hood and Aristocats in the animation, can't you?

  • I've heard of Banjo the Woodpile Cat, so I have to say that this was probably the first time that I've ever seen this film. As always, Don Bluth had done it again with his inspiring style and great storytelling.

    It was worth watching! :)

  • Quite a few imperfections in story, but the animation is truly Don Bluth. There's lots of his hallmarks we'd come to see later on: the round characters; the tongue-waggery and that bizarre watery-jawed 'oo'-thing; the scratchy fur design; a lost character yearning for home. You can find the scene where Banjo gets swept in a wave of water in almost all of his later films!

Its good to see this, and for all its charm, I'll see it again later!

  • Iused to pretend that thiswas thomas o malley from the aristocrats even though the kitten doesnt look like him that much but it was just a thought you know with the street cats and all..

  • I love all of Don Bluth's work. It's just so unique, he and Gary Goldman did some amazing things together. I grew up with their films, but this was the only one I hadn't seen. I'm so glad you posted! It's adorable, I loved it

  • 0:08, no scarf

    0:11, scarf...

    0:28, no scarf

    I'm really starting to wonder

  • I love this cat stories and the wonderful music! Thanks for posting!

  • anyone seen Disney's "sword in the stone"? okay so Cleo kinda looks like Mab....and i think someone did tell me that Don Bluth did use to work for Diseny....i think he also did Robin hood

  • Wonderful - so tender!

  • i can't believe you have this movie...i love it

  • Thanks for uploading this! I've been looking for it. A well done cartoon with catchy melodies and a simpel storyline, Great!.- I met Don Bluth back in the 80ties.- So it was fun to see Banjo.. again. Thanks!

  • Nyghtshade409, There is a background story you should take into consideration of this cartoon. Don Bluth had just left Disney and had taken some key animatores with him which Disney was very upset about. Bluth didn't had a lot of money so they made Banjo in Bluths garage.- This cartoon was something they did before NIMH. Bluth also had a hard time getting NIMH out 'cus Disney tried to block him all the. For Disney it's just business, the strong survive.

  • Gary Goldman sent me a great email regarding Bluth, Goldman, & Pomeroy's disillusionment w/ Disney while working on The Rescuers, Pete's Dragon, The Small One & Fox & the Hound all at the same time. Banjo was essentially their nights & weekend project that they used to teach themselves classical animation methods since most of the older Disney animators didn't remember or write down how they did the amazing effects way back when.

  • Beautiful, i like the end.

  • Same here! He does look a lot like Edmond!

  • Aw , too short a movie!

  • This is a short movie! Banjo reminds me of Edmond from Rock-A-Doodle (as the kitten)

  • Felidae as you call it is availble on youtube. You would just have to look it up. I watched it on here not to long ago. I still think about it..

Anyways I liked this it was super Kwaii.. ;p

  • Oh, how cute and adorable film, just too short.:) I love it.:)

  • I've heard of this animated classic, but this is the first time I've seen it! Now I wanna go out and buy the VHS and see it over and over again!

There's something about this animation that is both charming and soft that can really melt your heart, and it's definitely proven here. Thank you so much for uploading this!!!!!

  • Thanks so much for uploading this!!! I just <3 Don Bluth's movies. And Don Bluth <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Considering Bluth made this in his flippin' GARAGE on a budget of string cheese and Cocoa Puffs, I'd say he did a halfway decent job. If memory serves, there were plans to expand the whole thing into a feature, but they ran into story problems as time went on.

  • He did a MORE than decent job. The quirks only make it better. There aren't enough animated movies about cats,in my opinion.

  • I meant decent as compared to some of his later stuff. (My favorite of which bein' Rock-a-Doodle, also cat based ^_^). Most of the quirks actually evolve from the fact they were rushed to get this done in time for Christmas. That's why if you don't blink, you'll notice a very -few- references to the holiday.

  • Have you, per chance, seen felidae? It's not exactly a kid movie, but it is still pretty good. As long as you can stomach the gore and don't really mind all the sexual innuendo, of course. It's based on a murder mystery novel, so of course it's going to contain plenty of bloodshed. I personally think the sexuality of it was rather....overdone, but still, it's well animated and the art style was well done.

  • Haven't seen the film yet, as the English dub is rather hard to come by for obvious reasons, but I did read and was throughly entertained/creeped out by the book. Although I don't really know if I'd WANT to see those dream sequences animated or not, that would give me nightmares for the next 400 years.

  • They show the english dubbed version of Felidae here on youtube ^_^

    PS: BEWARE. It's INTENSE

  • @Nyghtshade409 yeah, I like Felidae, that was really great animation, especially the dream sequences.. could have done without the sex scene, though.

  • It's better than 90% of the crap being made today.

  • Your opinion then, but if you don't mind could you explain your reasoning?

  • If you mean mine, then it's just that I don't care too much for the art style itself, and the fact that the cat was constantly running around with it's tongue dangling all over the place like a dog. The art is very similar to the first NIHM movie, which was fairly good, but that was due to the story. The storyline of this one has some potential, but this movie itself just wasn't enough to impress me. I've seen several movies from around this time, animated ones, that were far better.

  • Yeah, they were kind of rushed to finish it and when it came time to bite the bullet, most of the plans for the full expansion into film got cut. I'm not counting it as an end-all (Although for me, NIMH IS something to judge buy, I personally think that thing looks beautiful) More or less this is just an interesting little curio from a director whose movies I enjoy. Steamboat Willie isn't perfect either ya know, but it's the value of thing.

  • Quite true, although I can't say I ever saw Steamboat Willie. If they had completed the entire movie, it would probably have been a pretty good one.

  • scruffy..and cute

  • Thanks for posting this. I'd been dying to see this cartoon but it's not exactly widely available on DVD.

  • Its not as far as i know other then import bootlegs

  • Thank you also, spaced that

  • Righty-o, man! Fantastic!

  • Thank you, i wish the tape didn't bug out on the end and i got the last few notes but it went all wacky
