I think the reason he kills is so that he can relive the triumph he from killing his father, after enduring such abuse and tragedy. That's why he first kills the child (himself), the woman in the bathtub (his sister), then the mother of two (his own mother), and finally the father of two (his father). He's recreating his own twisted upbringing, except in his fantasy, he's in control of his destiny.

Most of the time he strikes me as a pathetically traumatized killer , almost mentally handicapped, but then he has these rare moments where you see his inner monster that makes me completely reevaluate him. Right here Trinity is impersonating both father and his abused former self.
