  • It is like watching through a murky aquarium

  • Wow. Both showing enormous skill and determination. This is called "The War" and it's easy to see why.

  • ,Brilliant fighting.

  • angulo vs kirkland was very close to this in brutality.

  • No you got it right miggysss1.

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • @crossbronx63 just watched it again still don't think hagler lost, did the challenger do enough to beat the champion ? Not in my book, quick flurry of punches that's it, no boxing lesson, I think the reaction of the boxers at the end says it all, hagler "I beat him" Leonard "I have nothing to say" maybe that Vegas crowd won him the fight.

  • I gave a standing ovation even after all these years and I'm only watching on YouTube. I always thought hagler was robbed against sugar ray.

  • @miggysss1 you need to watch Hagler-Leonard it again.

  • Hearns wins this fight in one or two if he did not break his right hand in the first round. When the announcer says "Haglar is now shaking off the punches" That's because Thomas broke his right on that hard head of Marvelous. He wasn't "shaking off" anything...The punches were no longer a "real" Hitman bomb. Had they been, not even Hag could have survived the first round. As for SRL, he tried to steal rounds with his little windwills, smiles, and dance moves. He was great but too much show 4 me

  • This is what you call a legal street fight!

  • men talk with their fists, not by wrestling each other. mano y mano. i love MMA but, ther's no other way to know who's the man but to have a good old fist fight.

  • As for Hagler walking through the right hands halfway through the fight, a lot of people forget that Hearns broke his right hand on the crown of Marvin's head just before that. I can tell you from experience that is an insurmountable obstacle. You have to keep landing the broken hand or the opponent will figure out what's going on and pick you apart. Hearns was scary tough.

  • Sacrificing defense to land punches in bunches was a Kronk Gym thing, I think. Sure made for some exciting fights.

  • One thing I don't think is mentioned enough is that Hagler was better at covering up and protecting himself than was Hearns. If you'll notice, many times Marvin is simultaneously attacking AND guarding his face. Tommy was more explosive and powerful, but also left himself open and exposed far more often -- and Hagler was able to exploit it.

  • @pnutbutrncrackers I think Hearns had to do that because he was a bigger puncher and needed room to punch. When he covered up against the ropes it did block punches, but Hearns loved to punch. I think he always sacrificed defense for landing punches.

  • The greatest opening round in boxing history? Certainly one of them.

  • mma is a great mix of martail arts that gives you an entertaining combat sport with elite athletes with great ground fighting skill.....

    but...

The skill and technique that elite boxers posses is inmatched...

the best mma striker would be very competitive in the ring with an elit boxer of this caliber...

An educated mma fan understands that boxing is a martial art and respects it.

Im sick of this boxing vs mma shit!

  • Hagler was such a bulldog. He was stunned in first few seconds but IMO basically had control of the fight thereafter. Tommy just looked really off balance and wobbly (especially R3). Hagler was (though famous) such an underrated boxer of this generation. Leonard didn't deserve to win their fight again IMO but if you watch that one he won on bias from the judges and those little flurries he'd do that did no damage.

  • Hagler could take a punch as well as or better than any other fighter ever. In my humble opinion.

  • AND THE MARVELOUS ONE BEAT SUGAR RAY TOO!!

  • The only way your going to see these fights nowadays is in videogames lol. Old is gold no two ways about it

  • They just don't make them like they used to

  • the best first round of any fight ever. the yank commentators though are a joke.

  • Probably not as good a round as the 10th rd of Bowe Holyfield one but only because they were heavyweights

  • This is how boxing should be, anyone who disagrees is fucking retarded and probably a Floyd Mayweather fan, His ass is going to get ko'd just like roger, Hahahaha

  • Probably the greatest 1st round in any fight. These guys were not afraid to get hit, they just went at it. WOW! I truly miss watching these old fighters, they were awesome.

  • Hearns broke his right hand in the first round, apparently.

  • Hagler's head is WIDE open.

Hearns was badly overtrained for this fight. He had little punching power as a result.

They look like two six year olds slapping away at each other.

And this crap passes for the "greatest of all time" with the clueless modern media.

  • @marcxopoco dude, wtf are you talking about?

  • @marcxopoco Why arnt you a world champion or hall of fame trainer by now.. damn!

  • @marcxopoco

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, what's your name so i can youtube it and look at your fights?

  • This makes UFC look gay.

No homoerotic laying on top of a guy positions here. Just pure punching skill.

  • @GuyoftheStars amen

  • best fight ever!

  • floyd would dance around these two bums

  • @smackdownbb4 with all due respect, the only thing floyd is dancing around is a fight with pacquiao

  • @smackdownbb4 hagler and hearns, bums?!?!?!?! are you fucking retarded? hearns is probly one of the few welterweights that would knock floyd the fuck out

  • @likawildcougar big deal floyd. couldnt handle his biggest opponents Leonard and Hagler. Hearns was too tall and thin thus very rubbery legged when he got hurt. Probably third or fourth in his era. He did beat duran but not in duran's prime so i dont know if he is third or fourth. if he would have fought in an era like Larry Holmes where therre was no great fighters he would have been the best but he fought in the golden age of his weight class with him, leonard, hagler, and duran.

  • @smackdownbb4 - Floyd Jr would have to dance like it were his last dance against Hearns pal!But 1 slip up against the hitman, which is inevitable! And Floyd's eggshell head woul be cracked open beyond repair! He is hard to hit but so was Leonard! And SRL looked like a mess but was tough enough, and good enough to comeback,PBF cant take punishment and he knows it! Pacquiao is well capable of catching PBF all to often, and he knows it! PBF is an all time great Paper Champion! You that term pal!? LOL!

  • @smackdownbb4 Yeh hed dance around them just like he danced around castillo in their first fight.?????????? knowing that hagler and hearns fight much more agressive and are muhc more brutal than castillo i would think now.

  • freakin WAAAAAR!

  • big-time boxers today got nothing on these guys

  • How do you score a round like this? Does anyone know whether the judges in this fight scored the first round for Hagler, Hearns, or even? I probably would have scored the round for Hagler, by a hair.

Another super tough round to score: Foreman Lyle round 4

  • How many think a pro level boxer could take an MMA fighter? I do.

  • @Oakfand i do to, dont listen to this shit 'the ufc will go for the legs' he's gotta get past the boxers right hand/uppercut/hook, wont happen. boxing is the prestigue of all fighting sports. and before anyone goes to reply and be negative to this just remember - no one gives a fuck about ufc so fuck off

  • @rottweilerdog10 mma has professional boxers .. they win and they lose .. different sports .. wrestlers have highest winning % in real fights .. not hand fights

    boom sucka

  • UFC by far beats the excitement of a Mayweather fight nowadays. So yeah, Mixed Martial Arts is the future, and boxing is in decline. But Hagler, Duran, and Leonard, these were the glory days of boxing

  • I agree but mayweather shouldn't be the standard to compare. he's only in it for the money. fighting 2 times in like 4 years? c'mon. there are still boxers that are exciting like pacman, angulo, darchinyan, jm lopez. I'm not giving up hope on boxing yet!

  • @jenesepais UFC had a fad explosion and is now in decline. Hardly anyone knows what MMA is.

  • Now this is BOXING....wow O wow O wow o wow!!!! I wasn't thought of at this time but my father told me all about these epic bouts ohhhh what a time...not like this any more you cant find any bouts that can match the intensity of these bouts!

  • Round(s) like that is what make's boxing the best sport in the world, you don't get that kind of excitement in UFC. Hagler and Hearns, both legends

  • Yeh, this is the perfect example of why this

sport is the king of sports. Most exciting and courageous.

  • Greatest round in boxing. The excitement of this is up there with the start of the Indy 500 for electric. Though I have never seen a big fight in person. I need to start my bucket list on go to one.

  • Wow.

Perhaps the greatest round in boxing history.

Hearns' main problem was that he was ~ 6 '1 and fighting in middle weight divisions. His legs are too thin, he could take the punishment. He would have been better with lots more weight, fighting at light heavyweight.

  • Oh mann ... In one round i saw more action than so many fights these days. So sad that this fight ended in 3 round. i hoped , that Hearns will win, but broken right arm was probably too much for him, becouse i don't belive that he was stunned after the knockdown. He took more powerfull punches in this fight than this right hook in round 3. Beautiful fight!

  • Damn Hagler is a beast, that's the kind of boxing I like. Hearns got a weak chin for this kind of boxing and as you can see at the end of the round, Hearns got noodle legs and Hagler look like he just when for a walk.

  • Hearns is like fucking lightning.

  • the refery is very nice dancer,, wahahahaha

  • it would be cooler if they have posted how many punches Thrown/ Landed.

  • Nothing beats a great round of boxing, nothing... not even the greatest of the UFC... BOXING THE PURIST AND GREATEST SPORT...

  • get out of here with that shit. this was 25 years ago. when was the last time youve seen boxing fight with straight brawling like this?

  • This year, Victor Ortiz vs. Marcos Maidana

  • @barryjgillis what's with the ufc talk on here barry? .. all boxers are either jealous of mma or yall are a buncha jew trolls .. either way .. shame

  • @barryjgillis

Yeah! Boxing is a solid science. It can't be added on to or deducted from.

  • @barryjgillis anyone who says UFC is better than boxing needs to watch this vid and stfu. 90% of the UFC fights always end up on the ground and end in like ten seconds

  • @barryjgillis : This and round 10 of Holyfield/Bowe I are just sheer boxing brilliance.

  • @barryjgillis purest.. greatest.. dirtiest.. corruptest.. riggedest.. ridiculousmatchmakingest and recordpaddingest.. true dat, bro.

  • @barryjgillis Thats right, but UFC sucks anyways, any fight of PRIDE FC beats any combats sports including boxing and UFC together, and i love boxing.

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha - first off, you had to go to a 30-year-old round to try to one-up a sport that's barely 15 years old. Second of all, its just two guys punching each other. The only reason its entertaining is because they sacrificed actual fighting skill for a love of punching. Third, anyone who uses the words "purist" and "boxing" in the same sentence should make sure that their lying promoter pays off a crooked judge before his drug tests go public.

  • @barryjgillis go watch jung vs garcia.... i havnt seen a boxing match better than that

  • @barryjgillis AMEN TO THAT, BARRY!

  • I don't think we'll ever see a round from Mayweather like this one. But from Pacquiao, I would not be surprised.

  • this fight is unbelievable, and both guys had guts to just start swinging from the start. Usually guys work into this, but to start at the beginning takes two men who have guts and confidence in thier power. What a round! Incredible. I do not think it is possible to have another opening round like this ever again. I know it has not happened since.

  • its a shame boxing isn't anywhere near like this anymore, so exciting!!! looks like hearns had a really good solid jab, i dont really know much about these fighters, who was defending the title? was it a welterweight bout? didnt they both step up to middle weight later in there careers?

  • azzakean, Hagler was defending his 3 belts. It was a middleweight fight for undisputed champion. Hearns was the contender, but he also held the super welterweight title, which was not at stake. During this first round, Hearns broke his right hand on Haglers face lol. He lost his big punch after that, and Hagler dropped him in the 3rd.

  • I didn't know about the broken hand. As I have posted before, that group of boxers was priceless.

  • pacquiao cotto?

  • not far off aye,

pacquiao is just a bundle of energy!! doesn't stop, 100mph all the time

  • they did too much early. hearns wouldve won but hes doing too much he just to jab from outside. hearns had to get out of the corner. this way he wouldnt have lasted long and he didnt.

  • love marvelous , but all his biggest fights were against blown up welterweights

  • True, but they were blown up welterweights that would have destroyed anyone since 1987 through today. That includes Hopkins and Jones who are natural middleweights

  • I don't think you can say thast Hopkins and Jones would get "destroyed" by any of the guys Hagler fought, or even Hagler himself. Jones and Hopkins are ATGs like anyone else, and would have given these guys tough fights at the very least. Some would say prime Jones beats anyone at 160 in history (including SRR).

  • They don't make'em like this anymore.

  • I saw this live on CC and all we did was scream and scream and scream for eight solid minutes! This was so earth shattering and dramatic that I had larigities after the fight for two days!!!! The closest I experianced to this war was the all time classic Corrales-Castillo I fight. That was 10 rounds of the first round of Hagler-Hearns. Gatti-Ward I is up there too!

  • I'm 35 yrs. old and have been a fight fan since I was twelve and I must admit that this fight had the greatest three rounds of drama that I have ever seen.

  • I'm 50 amolapaz1.

Never seen another fight like this one, I was spellbound.

Don't believe I ever will, wish I had a really good quality tape of this.

I saw all the Ali-Frazier fights but this level of furious fighting, well, unprecedented.

  • Hagler once commented about this fight saying, "We never thought, we just fought." I think that this truly sums up this fight. I think Hagler was more shocked than anyone about how aggressively Hearns went at him.

  • Also, at 22 sec. into the fight, when Hearns hurt Hagler with that first right hand, Hearns actually broke his hand. The most potent weapon in Hearn's arsenal was that right hand and it broke after 22 sec. I think (even though the fight didn't last long) that this shows the tremendous heart that Thomas Hearns has.

  • amolapaz1,

This fight blew my head off!

I was lucky enough to see it live (I mean on TV), but it felt like I'd never seen boxing before.

Yes, Hearns has tremendous heart, a good man.

  • Definition of Hagler - Tough, superior boxer/puncher, slips beautifully, ring generalship, superior fitness, professional, determined and a granite jaw. Oh a class act as well.

  • Wow

  • greatest 1st round ever

  • Greatest round of all time.

  • the only thing that kept hagler up was adrenaline.

  • Nice try. The reply was to your DIRECT comparison of Holyfield lasting longer in the ring against Hagler over Hearns, which is a given. No point in even debating it, as it's obvious Holyfield could last longer than Hearns, and Tyson hits harder than Hagler. That's the point. They're heavyweights, take and deal FAR more damage, and it's a pointless comment. At worst I'm guilty of not conveying a point properly, with the "and Tyson punching stronger than Marvin" line. Of course he does.

  • Evander Holyfield's ability to withstand Hagler's shots, and Tyson punching stronger than Marvin? You realize how idiotic that sounds, considering they both fought as heavyweights and Hagler was a middleweight? I'd HOPE that they could punch harder and deal more damage than a guy 50 pounds lighter.

  • Nothing but True Warriors.

  • Ok only a small similarity. Some of the knockouts and body lauguage remind me of Tyson

  • I guess they were both black.

  • Hagler was like a better version of Tyson

  • they were nothing alike at all.

  • in this fight Hagler reminds me of Tyson as well. lol. Crazy brawl.

  • Could you imagine being Richard Steele in the ring with them???

  • a round for the ages...

these guys were so good neither should have had to lose

  • legends, there will never be a greater time in boxing

  • hearns almost had hagler mid way in the rd... if he had been able to follow that up w/ a clean combination he takes him out... but u have to give hagler such credit. his chin was iron & his awareness at all times was key here in surviving it... hes also and underrated bob and weaver. reminds me a lot of prime dempsey.

  • only thing in the history of the sport that can compare to the intensity for a first rd. was dempsey vrs firpo or dempsey vrs willard.

  • How often do you see people give a first round a Standing Ovation? Watch the people in the audience jump, not stand, to their feet at the bell ending the round.

  • Now thats how you fucking box!

  • box·ing 2 (bksng) n.The act, activity, or sport of fighting with the fists.

Still don't get it? Watch this clip.

  • definatlyone of the bestrounds in boxing history, i take my hat off to both of them, true champions!!

  • Hearns broke his right hand in that round and kept quiet about it fir years so as not to take any credit away from Hagler.

  • FELIX STURM IS THE BEST

  • Should have been sponsered by Carlsberg!

  • american class!

  • Basically, no one had a more ferocious right hand than Thomas Hearns, but unfortunately he was not the best at NOT getting hurt by punches himself. [Some boxers, like Bernard Hopkins, have not getting hit down to an art]. And once Hearns was solidly hit, he was definitely vulnerable.

Giant credit to Hagler for weathering the thunderstorm, persevering, and prevailing.

  • Bernstein is so biased "surprised" that Tommy's right hand hurt Hagler...what a crock. Hearns could ko virtually anybody. Then after the fight Hagler sits there and lies "No, he never hurt me." Yeah and elephants have wings.

  • i don't belive bernstein was biased toward either fighter , watch ppv 5 all i can say as much as i was for hagler you got to love hearns for the way he fought

  • anoncement , for all of you hagler fans marvin hagler is on myspace

  • The ref dances around more then Ali did :P

  • haha. good one.

  • Well, you can't blame him for wanting to stay OUT OF THE WAY in this one. There was all kinds of dynamite and explosives being thrown around in this fight!

  • I remember watching this fight at my grandfather's house when he was still alive. Unbelieveable fight...the GOLDEN AGE of boxing. Hagler was a bull. Hearns was awesome too.

  • brutal

  • That was just brutal to watch. I've never seen a boxer take as much punishment as Hagler did in that first round and still stay on his feet. What a pit bull he was!

  • Watching this makes me mad at watching the De la Hoya Pac-man fight. This is what a good round of boxing looks like. No shock that the sport is dead.

  • it wasnt pac's fault, dlh should have put up more of a fight.

  • i remember watching that fight, man. i was five. whenever i think of boxing, that's what i think of. great round.

  • We learn right away that Hagler may have had the best chin in boxing history by taking one the best P4P right hands ever. Knocked down only once in his career and that was a slip. I never saw him hurt. He wasn't even hurt by Hearns contrary to what Al Michaels said. Hagler shook it off right away and recovered fully.

  • I agree. Hagler's jaw was made of steel. The only guy I think who could whip him would be the late great Tony Zale. Lenard wouldnt dare slug it out with Hagler

  • I,ve seen that 1st round a thousand times & I still get chills up my spine watching it.

  • look at that burst from the the hitman after 27 seconds, Hagler showed his greatness to recover from that and knock hearns hearns out later, the other fighters from his (and the current) generation would have been ko'd from that.

  • what a pair of warriors! both going for it with a vengeance and not scared to lose, this is entertainment.

  • My favourite fight by a mile. Also chuckle everytime I see Richard Steele wisely deciding not to intervene on 0.54 secs - almost caught a left from hagler

  • Those guys were larger than life...actually that whole weight class back then was. Throw in Duran (my favorite), Leonard, and Barkley, etc...man oh man!

  • Exactly my thought's. They were the best not like the shit we see now

  • Cotto and Margarito don't deserve to be included in the shit he have now... but yes, we have shit

  • Thats true. I think it started to go down hill when their was more then one title per weight class.

  • Barkley was great box office but not in the same league as the fabulous four, I remember when Nigel Benn battered him, almost knocked him out with the very first punch!

  • Just a different fight. Hearns and Hagler are taking turns slamming each other at the beginning and then they start to exchange evenly.. It starts off both slamming and then they evenly slam. Incredible!!!! Gatti and Ward was good but not this quality. No way.. Those guys cannot be mentioned with Hagler and Hearns. Ward isn't even Hall of Fame and I doubt Gatti will be.

  • I agree with you. Ward and Gatti rumbled but I thought they wearnt as skilled and clean as Hearns and Hagler. While I'm on the subject they would have take Ward and Gatti out. The only person I think that could take Hearns and Hagler was The late Tony Zale

  • I would think that comparing Hagler/Hearns to Corrales/Castillo would be the comparison, but Gatti/Ward? That was a good fight but never never never can you put Ward in the same sentence as Hagler and Hearns. These guys here were sharp and punched hard. Hagler was seen as big punching middleweight and Hearns had that right hand which knocked guys cold. Gatti/Ward were two club fighters. Enough of the nonsense about Gatti/Ward. I think one guy is posting under different names to say that stuff

  • Emanual didn't say that. He said one of the best rounds. And the the general feeling is that Hearns/Hagler was the best round ever. Corrales/Castillo best fight ever. Gatti and Ward is seen as a great club fight with two guys who could't even come close to what Hearns and Hagler were in quality. This fight here was incredible with two guys who were sharp.. No comparison. Gatti/Ward was overrated.

  • in an interview emanuel stewart said gatti and ward was the greatest round of boxing and emanuel was hearn's coach. Remember, a great round of boxing isn't about two GREAT fighters...it's about two boxers with heart that don't quit. it was round 9, on a 10 card event. both fighters tired and still fought there asses off...this fight was round 1,none of the fighters tired, they just came out a threw bombs..taking nothing less both fights were awesome so was castillo vs coralles(RIP) 10 round.

  • Actually this ties with Gatti Ward's first fight, round 1,you really can't compare!!

  • Simply the greatest round of boxing ever

  • fmayweatherjr9, if you were floyd mayweather you would'nt be saying ward vs. gatti was the no.1 fight you ever seen. if you were floyd mayweather you would be saying your the best and your fights are the no.1

  • both gatti & ward had heart and where brawlers but lacked skills& punching power, that's why they could'nt knock each other out. both fighters would'nt last 2rounds with either hagler or hearns they would ko like duran. and there fights are not the best ever or no.1, great fights go all the way back to joe louis, robinson, ali, duran, leonard, hagler, hearns, tyson, holyfield, bowe, magrit, whitiker and chavez just to name few boxers with skills and punching power in there weight divison. that's my opinion

  • if you think gatti ward are greatest boxers you ever seen and fights are no.1 that's opinion and your entitled to. but my opinion there more to boxing than just two guy's swinging there arms.

  • This is definitely one of the best rounds in boxing history. Gatti-Ward is also up there, but this is just nuts. I mean, Hearns broke his hand against Hagler's head and just kept going... both these guys showed tremendous heart.

  • this is what is needed in boxing now! two men that square off in the ring and beat the blood and stuffing out each other and niether man drops. Hagler didn't own Hearn and Hearns didn't own Hagler...both men came out swinging and connecting.

  • i reckon hearns owned that round

  • Best fight evah!

  • ward gatti 1...best fight ever....best 1st rd ever i will buy

  • while the fights in the 80's where legendary, you have to admit some of the hype is the commentators! HAHA. they scream their asses off when someone jabs and such. like they are high on caffine. but yea this is a good fight.

  • I was trying to find the orign of the rapper duo Nas and Az on their line "we hard hit just like Hagler and Hearns". ZOMFG..hard hit is an understatement...

  • This fight proves the old boxing adage: When two big punchers collide, the one with the better chin prevails. Hearns, despite being a great fighter, could never take a hard shot. Hagler? Punches that would send most men to the land of the fairies just psyched him up!

  • The bell rang and both flew out of their corners with all the patience of a sawed-off shotgun. You don't see boxing like this anymore.

  • Actually, you can still see boxing like this - it just doesn't happen very often! The 9th round of Gatti-Ward I was, in my opinion, even more dramatic than this incredible round. Of course, you could argue Gatti-Ward was not fought at world-class level...certainly, the stakes in this match could not have been higher.

  • Hagler was in better shape. Tommy was all done after the first exchange. Spent.

  • Is it me or did Tommy lose gas after 30 seconds?

  • you're over exaggerating. He was out of it because he let his stupid entourage oil him down before the fight, which takes away your energy-remember? It wasn't because he couldn't hang in there.Plus,he broke his most lethal weapon(right hand)in the first 40 seconds. If you notice,he wasn't punching as hard with his right hand.Haglers big head helped him win the fight.I agree that Hagler would've won by KO anyway, but not this early.

  • Wow. What a round. I wonder what happens next.

  • you knew hearns wouldn't last fighting hagler like that. I love him for it though.

  • simply the greatest 3 minutes of boxing ever
