@TyrSilvermoon I agree with you, Warhammer 40k Space Marine is definetly NOT a rip off from Gears of War. Gears of war is the rip off from 40k because 40k takes place in a gothic setting. If I remember correctly, 40k was created in 1983 whereas Gears of War was created well after 40k. If anyone disagrees tell us Warhammer fans what you think and we will definetly tell you that Gears of War is the rip off, just like Starcraft is.

@Ninjahpingu99 Warhammer 40k the miniatures game was created in the 1980s because the setting takes place in a gothic era. Which means that Space Marine didn't borrow the idea from Gears of War, they just took the armies and weapons from the actuall miniatures game and used it in this third-person shooter game. Gears of War just simply borrowed the the idea from Warhammer 40k. I did not mean to say that Gears of War was a rip off from Space Marine, I meant to say borrowed.

People don't understand that the Warhammer 40,000 ip has been around since 1987. That predates everything in modern Sci-fi except Star Wars. These Ultramarines - as much as everyone hates them - not only predate Marcus Fenix but would tare him to pieces... with their fists. And also, the game's got a meltagun, which fires a beam of superheated air and promethium at a target, melting a head size hole in anything it's aimed at - better than a shot gun by far

You see Gears of War did not invent third person shooters, the part of the game which felt original was the cover mechanics. The thing that is similar about the two games is the visuals.

What people don't realize is that warhammer 40k has a table top game which has been around before gears of war was thought up and being a player of the tabletop game myself I can identify all of these weapons as those from the tabletop.

I can definitely explain to you why people are close minded. It has to do with territorial tendencies, fear of the unknown and fear of change.

Ironically, fear of the unknown is also the reason developers make so many games that are similar-they're afraid that new IPs and new types of games won't get people buying. Of course, inevitably everything comes from something else, but really interesting combinations of what has come before seem to be restricted to indie developers.
