Good Car for it's time.Unknown Fact about the BMW is that it's an evolutionary update 1982-88 model on the version that came before it so while new on the outside and inside styling wise it's much the same as old model.
I love the way this model looks. Japanese luxury cars were so much better in the 1980's and very early 1990's. 929, Toyota Cressida, Mitsubishi Sigma (so rare but so nice), etc.
Th 929s were pretty cool large cars for a Japanese maker. It's just too bad the resale value was low and put them into the hands of people who trashed them. Mazda should again focus on a large sedan. The millenia was kind of a halfa** job because it had too many quality issues.
I drove one of these 929's back in 1988 when they were first introduced. The feel of the car on the road reminded me of sort of halfway between a BMW 5-series, and a 7-series - Heavy and solid, but with taut, disciplined handling, and enough engine to make it fun.
@jwatwater honestly theres like 20 around me, also check out rx7club.com theres a bunch of rx7 owners on there, even the 70's rx7 their still on the road my main man. lol
I had a 929 exactly like the one in the commercial. It was my 2nd car ever. Had some weird eletrical issuses and the rear gave out on me so I junked it. The most luxurious car I've ever owned.
I just bought one of these with 99 thousand Km and one old lady owner with all the records for 470 bucks I also happen to own the exact same model and color mercedes 190e thats in that commercial all I can say is the 190e was a nightmare and the mazda is like driving a brand new luxury car. The Benz died so much and cost like 6000 in parts. Not to mention the electrics are dead the mazda is far more comfortable and has many more options and I love it!!!!
my mom bought one of these back in 1998 so the car was already 10 years old but it had so many things that the new cars at the time still didnt have. it was ahead of its time even 10 years later
A guy it's selling me a '86 MAZDA 323 in us$400... and only needs to replace the fuel distribuitor...shoul I buy it???...never have a MAZDA before, anyone?
I own one, so let's see if it lives up to the ad 20 years later:
1) "World class luxury appointment" - Heated leather seats, power heated mirrors, digital dash with imperial/metric switch, electric sunroof, electronically controlled automatic transmission with power and economy modes, ultra light steering, power driver's seat, power windows all round, factory alarm, etc and this is the base model!
Mazda is maybe the most hero brand of japan car makers, they have risk 2 much always trying to bring outstanding prodcuts that R and were top tech marvels like the mazda 929 or the millenia and their rotatory history. Mazda deserves more respect than other japanese brands, Their cars have been always good, having a unique taste like the mazda 626.i had a 1988 mazda 626lx 4 doors, everything inside is electric and extremeley comfortable and its engine incredibly reliable 12 valve and so POWERFULL
I have heard always thar the mazda 929 was a technological marvel, as forexample they have something with solar panels or similar thar provides an automated internal climate control to keep the temp inside car cool even when its off or without a battery.
In the early 1990's - Mazda was supposed to launch their luxury brand, Amati, to compete with Acura and Lexus, but Amati never took off.
Actually, I'd rather buy a Mazda than a Mercedes. Mercedes overall have very poor reliability, and although the handle well, and are very upscale, I have known several people who own them, and they are in the shop more than on the road.
Yeah, true, you really can't compare a Mazda with a BMW. Then again, BMW's are thousands more than Mazdas.
That's a pretty darn broad statement. As a former employee of a Mercedes/BMW dealer, I would have to disagree. Quality is a cycle. Currently, Mercedes has not been up to it's previous standards but I see far more Mercedes on the Road from the 80's and 90's than I do see Mazdas. Mercedes history and reputation has been built on it's quality. There's no denying that Mazda has good quality but to say Mercedes is bad is rather broad and not accurate
Okay, sorry, I am only speaking what I have seen recently. Hope that Mercedes can get their quality back up. I think that Daimler dumping Chrysler was a smart decision, since Chrysler vehicles seem to be at the bottom of the barrel right now.
I realize exactly what you said, that quality is cyclical, and what is recommended now, may not be a good car or a good brand 10 years from now. And, thanks for being civil in your reply.
what? again ,the sticker price for Mazda is far better than Mercedes with its high priced maintain,,mazda is great quality and low maintain like mercedes but less price for parts and warranty
@OsbornTramain Maybe the reason that many older Mazda cars are not on the road, other than becasue they died, is because, unlike the European Luxury brands, they were fairly cheap. I think that people had less trouble sending them to the junk yard because they associate cheaper prices with disposable items. If they paid a lot for their car, they'd want to keep it longer. Don't get me wrong, i have 2 older mazdas myself, an mx3 and an mx5 (both which I love), but i think that just the way it is.
@OsbornTramain dud to have a mercedes or bmw of today stay on the road past 150000 you would end up spending 5000 just on repairs they set up all the computer/sensors on the new ones to go so they can get you coming back for repairs what they did in the 1980 to 1990 they dont do any more
@ecosby100 Agreed. I own a 1987 w201 190D 2.5... Nothing wrong with it, it's a very, very strong car. I know people who drive 2002 MB's.. Rust...computers gone crazy... Bills are huge.
@vangestelwijnen ya the other thing i dont understand is the japs will have a motor that is really good and then all of the sudden chang it after 20 years of good sevice
Actually, I think the 929 was not part of Mazda's planned (and never launched) luxury branch that begat the (1993?) Millenia. The 929 was around in the mid 80's. Thanks for posting these great commercials. I love 'em.
Actually, GLI7UTUBEO, the fourth-generation 929 was originally engineered to be the flagship of Mazda's planned luxury Amati line. That line, of course, never materialised, and this car was launched as a 929, and sold in the U.S. from 1991 to 1996, at which time it was replaced by the inferior Milennia.
I used to own a 1994 929, and I miss it every day! Long live 929!
also my grandmother got the blue one and my greataunt got the burugaly one.
