  • Sanborn became the host at some point, no? Holland is OK at what he does with his own program, but he should NEVER be asked to interact with musicans like this because he is a shit interviewer.

  • THOSE LINES

  • I am a white dude but if I was Dizzy I would have kicked that ass in the balls. You do not disrespect Mr. Gillespie.

  • THOSE CHEEKS

  • El mejor de todos los tiempos chequea esta vercion del tema por mi grupo de Puerto Rico SIN FRONTE LATIN JAZZ y deja tu comentario

  • ahm... is marcus miller the bassist????, OwO

  • I love Dizzy and all American jazz. I watched this live way back in the 80s, and was struck by how much Dizzy was provoked and his response, which was fantastic.

Long live jazz, America, and the free expressive voice of Americans.

    hooooh yeah

  • I remember Miles Davis being on this show once, anyone got INFO on that?

  • The Atlantic just got an inch wider. In his defence, Jools, though irritating, can be quite a capable accompanist.

  • blowfish

  • Poor old Sanborn, he barely gets a look in :(

  • holly crap his cheeks get huge

  • Jools was just joking around. I don't see what the heavy melodrama is.

  • Show was first called ' Sunday Night ' ....Holland formed band Squeeze, has had music show on BBC for over 10 years. First part wasn't so much that Jools was annoying...but where were the editors?

  • Correction on the name of the show. It was called Night Music. Amazing show! Miles was a guest, also Sun Ra, tons of great people. Best music program EVER on TV. Period. If anyone knows where a complete DVD set of this program can be purchased I would love to know!

  • Someone broke his trumpet.

  • agh, i hate the way he plays. O^.^O

  • @Bananalisk lol... but obviously it's about sound. you know that....

  • thumbs up if google send you here.=]

  • 1:50 frog Thumb if you agree :))

  • Dizzy was great!! Enough said!!

  • Couldn't agree more with all the comments re respect for Gillespie ... at this time he's proven his mastery beyond any measure of doubt. One of the greatest trumpet / jazz legends of all time and seems like faulty equipment and disrespectful interviewers stand in his way here ... and his tone is not good on this vid' but as he solos overcomes everything to make his statement ... forgotten more about music than most will ever know

  • youtube.com/user/AnIntangibleBadge

  • What a band, love the bass playing.

  • Jools Holland reveals himself to be the complete wankstain that he is......shitty plinky plonk piano hack..........what a knob !!!!

  • David is such an incredible and versatile musician. I love his playing. Always have.

  • British guy was being very annoyingly british.

  • look at young marcus and hiram in the cut .... man this video .... is priceless ..... and sandborns tone is awesome ..... the entire ensemble are brilliant ....... and the godfather man this is so awesome ...... whoever posted this bless you my friend

  • Disrespecting a master!!!

  • DUDE SHUT UP AND LET THE NICE MAN PLAY

  • Mr Dizzy Gellespie one of the GREATEST musos that ever walked the planet and

Jules Holland one of the WORST. Just shows what a .....Holland is being so disrespectful to Mr gillespie. Say no more.

  • wow.. that Jools guy is a total douche..

  • "JOHN BULL!" "What, the printers?"

Oh Jools, Jools, I love ya, but what a dummy you are :)

  • Gotta love him!!!

  • wow, those cheeks= a LOT of air

  • AS hard as I try, I still cannot get into the groove of straight ahead jazz. This is different though. I"m a fan of David Sanborn who's very palletable but doesn't stray too hard or too soft which is why I like him I guess. Dizzy here is playing some rather enjoyable notes without too crazy like Miles Davis. More in the vein of modern jazz. I'm thinking Antonio Carlos Jobim modern.

    Sounded good.

  • What I never really got about Jools is- he seems to have a genuine love of all types of music, hosts the best music show on British T.V. and yet CANNOT interview for shit. It's like he has no concept of how to communicate with other musicians properly, and always resorts to goofy cliche questions. Look up any clip of his show- it is WEIRD.

  • is that marcus miller in the background?

  • @frizzzzzzal Yes, indeed.

  • @frizzzzzzal @frizzzzzzal Yes, indeed. Also Hiram Bullock.

  • @frizzzzzzal

    yep...and omar hakim on bass

  • @sbrownie Omar on drums, Marcus on bass

  • OMG his face makes me laugh when hes playing hahahaa, his cheeks blow up like a frog lol. no disrespect hes a great musician

  • Great older video. I love seeing Marcus perfectly " lay down " the bass part in a more traditional role. Just shows how immensely talented he was at a young age. Wish the drums could be heard more completely.

  • Awesome!

  • Love this, thanks for posting

  • Salt peanut

  • Oo-Bop-Sh-Bam

  • To adameats_ Yes that is me on piano. Man it was an honor to do that show. It was Dianne Reeves who requested me to work with her on the show. David then saked me to play in all of the segments , which of course included Dizzy and David Peaston.

  • You doing a real good job , I like your comping

  • Sublime Sanborn!!!

  • i think that's Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano actually...any confirmation?

  • Marxus Miller on bass right?

  • dizzy's voice is sooooo grizzly!

  • David plays well with Dizzy. Dizzy was without a doubt, along with BeBop co-creater Charlie Parker the NEW model for Jazz music. I would have given my eye teeth to have played with him!

  • All the amazing things Dizzy has done for music and all Holland can do is take the piss, what a waste of time and energy! And on top of that Jools Holland is SHIT!!!

  • @slothedog - Dizzy could have taken Holland's head off with his tongue if he'd wanted to! - I'd say that they were taking the piss out of one another!

Gillespie was known for playing pranks on other members of the band, ie. turning their score sheets upside down, hiding their music, stuff like that!

He could give as good as he got!!!

  • @swingmanic I know what you mean, but I can just sense a nasty edge to Hollands piss taking you know? Can you see it? He seems to be hiding real animosity behind a false "jokey" face... maybe I'm wrong, but I get a bad vibe from the guy... I really don't respect him as a musician either so that doesn't help.. he should be humble in the face of such a master.

  • @slothedog I agree that Jools missed a good opportunity interviewing Dizzy, perhaps out of feeling intimidated by the presence of this royal figure of music. But I revised my view of him when on another occasion I heard him play and was impressed. However when this show was on, I too couldn't quite figure out what his role was besides being some kind of comic relief. In general, I think he is well-intentioned, talented and even respected by Miles in an audio interview Jools conducted with him.

  • You've got it all wrong.

  • Anyone who thinks the start is "sly humour" between two great musicians is delusional. Dizzy Gillespie is telling him to stop talking bull, rightly so too

  • Amazing

  • Yeh bring back the show but without pathetic boogie woogie tosser Jools holland

  • They should so bring this show back.

  • No idea what's going on at the start, but Jool's on-screen style is so casual that Dizzy could be forgiven for not even realising he's being interviewed. He acts like he thinks they're just sound-checking and chatting crap until the next take. I like Jools, but social skills are not his strong suit, bless.

  • I think Dizzy is wishing this white boy would speak english...

  • This was one of the best TV shows EVER! Great lineup (it changed a few times, but was always excellent) and a host of great guests (such as Dizzy himself, Miles Davis and other). It was not only jazz (though jazz was favored), but also ground braking music. I miss this show very much!

  • love this song! Is that Marcus Miller?

  • Yeah, it's Marcus Miller

  • That is Omar Hakim on drums.

  • If you know anything about Jools or Dizzy you will know that this was a little silly humor between to great musicians. I saw Jools with Squeeze in the 80's and I've yet to hear a pianist with a left hand that good. I pulled this up because I was looking for vids with Hiram Bullock in them. Hiram was the finest session and sidemen ever. He will be missed. It is great to see Dizz, Sanborn, Hiram, Marcus and I believe that's Buddy Williams on drums, piano? Hiram played for the song not for himself.

  • This is seriously one of the best lineups ever.

  • "John Bull!"

    "What, the printers?"

    LOL

Dizzy, one of the greatest of all time trumpeters. Still missed.

  • when i hear this great song, i think of driving across the 59th st bridge on a snowey ny night at 2.00 am.100.000 plus hits. it shows you we all know great music.

  • Great clip! What is happening at the start is that Dizzy is being slightly uncooperative and not making Jools' job easy. Jools doesn't know what to do. He's lost for words and pissed off as he has met a legend who isn't playing the broadcasting game and chatting. Maybe Dizzy wonders who the hell he is talking to.

  • this may be over my head, but what the hell were they talin about in the beginning

  • I miss this show sooooo much! I loved the episode when they all played on toy instruments! That was special - just like this one! As always David & Marcus rock!

  • sanborn tears it up in this song

  • I can't hear Bullock on this one .. :-|

  • Wow I loooovvved this! Dizzy seemed like a really nice guy. funny as hell!

  • I love the sound of Dizzy!!! Very nice video!!!

    5*****

  • wow...super awkward conversation at the beginning

  • this was the best show on tv during my lifetime....an eclectic mix of musicians and they all played together...pretty cool...vh1 had new visions on sunday nights as well but it was kind of watered down

  • Marcus Miller xD so young

  • Yeah! I saw him play younger - went to the same high school - he rocked at 14!!!!!! Very cool dude - saw him years later (many) and we started talking about intramural basketball games we played in school! Stayed in the club all night - met Lenny White, Michael Brecker and Michael Urbaniak that night. What A Freakin Night!!!!!

  • I miss this show so much.

  • marcus on the bass!...yeah:)

  • is that herbie hancock on the piano?

  • no..............................

  • Phillipe Saisse... read!

  • What a tune!

  • i love to listen as much as i love to play.

    paul.

  • @aaronentresz this is a "shut the fuck up" moment

  • avant garde ~ jazz ~ classical

  • JOHN BULL!

  • This is too special. It's un de scribable have great this song is. Moving!

  • marcus miller in the back on bass

  • this waaay better than the shitty kenny g videos on youtube. Dizzy has the biggest cheeks I have ever seen

  • Amen, to both comments!

  • Dizzy having no technique, no harmony knowledge... Are you kiddin' or ignorant? David is a good player, but he didn't invent anything. He is not a genius like Dizzy or Charlie...

  • I agree not to down david sanborn he is an excellent sax player but his first few albums didnt do much and when he got with Marcus Miller (the bass player in this video and was the musical director for this tv series) marcus came at david with six songs he wrote and david like them so much he put them on one of his albums and its because of marcus' bass playing, song writing and producing that david won his first 3 grammies

  • I don't agree... i believe David Sandborn invented that shitty smooth jazz sound/tone that he and kenny G are both famous for.

  • David has soul. grover washington jr. is smoother then him. David has a edgy tone, but has alot more control then Kenny G ever will.

  • wtf are you talking about?

  • I do not want to call David Sanborn one of the greatest at all... He's no Eddie Harris, Wardell Gray, Prez, Bird, Trane, Dexter, Chris Potter, Hank Mobley, Gerry Mulligan, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, Sonny ROllins, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball... I could say 100 more before I got to his name. Im sure if you put in the time you could control 3x his technicality and 3x his soulness... or whatever you people call the face he makes when he plays that smooth jazz stuff. Check out his video Lisa. You know

  • What you say is true, however, I am not a huge Sanborn fan either, I am not crazy about his sound, but his playing is good. He should be recognized as offering a significant contribution to jazz, he has done alot to preserve the music, during a time when no-one cared - The mid 80's with his show night music, hats off to ya Dave Sanborn, and Dizzy, he is a genius, inventor, creator, and I am sure he had the highest sense of harmony.

  • yo,luciele how you holdin up. The bags still got the BAG. If you wanna take this dog down remember 45 BOLOSHI BOOZE

  • are you retarted?

  • theelder987 do us all a favor. Stick your head out the car window and roll it up.

  • The pianist in this video is Onaje Allan Gumbs.Phillipe is off camera playing a second keyboard.

  • Dizzy is big like always.

look , their are 3 of the best jazz-men ever.

  • what this clip doesn't show is dizzy & sanborn ramming their instruments up every orifice on the host's body after finishing the song. what an idiot to talk to dizzy like that.

  • Dizzy: "I never found out what Tin Tin Deo meant.."

Jools "Did you find out what it meant?"

Dizzy: "No, No, I never did."

  • Does Jools know who he's talking to? It's like he has no respect for Dizzy and doesn't know anything about music. Really awkward.

  • I wish I had watched this show when it was on. Shame about that lousy host. Sanborn and Dizzy play awesome- as per usual.

  • is it just me, or is Dizzy kinda bland and almost stupid when it comes to conversations? it's just that he never really gives straight answers or talks intelligently

  • ah, come now, you should watch the video two, maybe three more times and then you'll get it. Dizzy stupid? no, its just you.

  • Jools Holland's attempt to be humorous has fallen flat in this video. When Dizzy retorts with the John Bull comment you can see Jools bristling and that was worth seeing. Dizzy Gillespie what a genius! My late father always talked about him

  • Classic Dizzy!

I remember when he sort of "ran" for president in the early 60s'(would have done well, too, I'm certain).

  • great music, bad host...

  • jools Holland isn't really the muppet he makes himself look..... i think he was a bit star struck. He has done a lot to put good live music on english television thus earning a bit of respect.

Confused by John Bull.. easy done coz here in england John Bull is cheap, nasty beer and Jools probably wondered why on earth D G would want a pint of that shite

  • Thank god to youtube

  • Jools should shut up in the presence of a musical god like Dizzy

  • Jools is funny enough in England, but his sense of humor just didn't fit in at all in the U.S. He comes off as a total dick. As I recall, he didn't last more than a year on the show. Sanborn seems to be a nice fellow, but he wasn't that great on the talk side, which may be why this program got. Great music, though!

  • Jools isn't considered "funny" in England. In general, English humour is far superior to the average American's. Admittedly, there are some fantastic American comedians, but without a doubt Britain has seen some of the best. Britain is home to some of the wittiest, most educated comedians of all time -- examples including Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Julie Walters, Victoria Wood, Bill Bailey ... American comedy is often foolish, uneducated and simply pointless.

  • I stand corrected about Jools (just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt :).

I'm American, but generally agree with your assessment of the 2 styles of humor. There is a streak of nastiness in British humor at times that to me can be a bit tedious, although when done well, the "ego-deflating" effect is nice. Perhaps the traditional class differences in British society create the need for ego-deflation?

In America, we have excellent humorists, too, but perhaps they are mostly dead...

  • Great Dignity of Gillespie,in not answhering

    this arrogant prick.

    Respect...

  • I agree with you

  • I miss this show so much. It was about real music so that was the kiss of death. It was on sunday nights cant remember th name

  • i think "sunday night" :-)

  • Why can't David Sanborn play like this any more? His solo was so much better than that shit he is playing today? Was he really that poor that he needed the money? His stuff with the Brecker Brothers in the 70's was sick, and this is terrific... it's a shame.

  • I just hear Sanborn play about six months ago. He had the most amazing sax sound I've ever heard live: powerful, expressive, passionate. His playing was top-shelf as well.

I will grant you that some of his albums have been a little weak, but for what he does, there's no one better.

  • totally

  • Diz is awesome, of course, but Sanborn sounded terrific on this! I'd love to hear more bebop from him.

  • I agree, timc674, this is a really fine solo from Sanborn. Don't know if I'd call it bebop, exactly, but I think this more traditional style suits him much better than the more modern "lounge jazz" style or whatever it is thatt seems to be popular these days.

  • i graduated from kirkwood high and were having an alumni band with possibly the great david sanborn he was a few years after me

  • thanks to all for filling in the names of the players; so fine to see and hear the smoothie sax and piano along w/ the elder legend. a great upload to share, dude!

  • I know everyone here has heard the Tin Tin Deo remake by David Sanborn off of his last album. Great tribute to the Diz.

  • Hiram Bullock on Guitar.

  • u fucking retards, the host is jools holland.

  • You should have heard Dizzy in his prime in the 50s and 40s .Yes he was playing in the 40s. See how you play when you're 70 or so? Dave is way cool but he is much better with soul and less changes. K

  • thats right he fucks around to much in the changes he should be working with some melody

  • marcus miller at the bass

  • The host is the biggest loser ever.

  • yea and one of the most accomplished pianists of our time, recognise DUMBASS thats Jools Holland

  • better ,great, ouawthanks

  • i dont get it, why is the host so hostile to a legend like Dizzy Gillespie, is he supposed to be joking with him, Dizzy dont look impressed at all!

  • Amazing! I was too young to enjoy this when aired, but last year Sanborn released his new CD "Closer" with a more latin-based, kicking version of this also called "Tin Tin Deo." Suggestions to check it out.

  • he should shave that goatee its annyoing

  • well for yor information dizzy is dead

  • showhost seems like asshole is he supposed to be funny or something

  • You are very perceptive! The host is Jools Holland who for reasons which totally escape me seems to be revered back here in the UK as a pre-eminent music expert. Just be grateful he didn't demand to sit in on the piano.

  • Well yea it seems dizzy is more annoyed by him than amused

  • why does dizzy's cheek get so big?

  • From years of playing the some muscles in his cheeks collapsed forming a sack of air when he played.

  • dizzy wow

  • Dizzy may be the best, but Sanborn ruled that video ^.^

  • and for your information dizzy play trumpet and david palay sax so stop comparing and give a little respect to dizzy

  • I didn't say Sanborn was *Better* than Dizzy, I just said he ruled this video. And I know Dizzy is dead. In my opinion, he was probably the best known trumpet player of the 1900's. I have great respect for the man, and just because he passed away, it doesn't mean I should hold him in any higher position in my mind than I did when he was alive.

  • you know what, nevermind. I just realized the name was Sunday Night.

  • What was the name of this show?

  • The full name of the show was: "Michelob Presents: Sunday Night with David Sanborn." I have been hoping the 2 seasons will be released on dvd at some point, but I suppose it will take a lot of doing what with the myriad artists that were on in those two years. I soooo miss this show.

  • this definetely gets the 'awesome' rating

  • It's not the best Diz you can get, and yet he is incredible.... He never stopped learning, although his chops began to get worse every passing year...

    Love you Diz!!

  • Subject Made up of famous Cuban Congadrumms CHANO POZO that work with Gillespie in l949. Wonderful.

  • Dizzy is the star of this video, which is par for the course for this trumpet and music GIANT.

Bird lives, and so does Dizzy.

    Saxismyaxe.

  • sorry sanborn lovers, but your guy does nothing for me.

  • I love Sanborn, but have your own personality sax players, nothing wrong with having his type of sound. But just don't be a carbon copy. I wanna hear you not Sanborn. Some people love him, I think he's great and underrated as a player. But then again we all have our opinions. Dude has played with MANY greats and not just oen style.

  • Sanborn is amazing in his own right. There are many factors that attribute to this but just the sole fact that he's been able to identify his sound so clearly that no one can mistake it, in itself is amazing. Let alone his technique, amazing ideas, and just being a great person; kinda like the Michael Brecker of alto saxophonists.

  • dizzy is a god

  • that is TIGHT as! Love the clip. Love Dizzy, Love Dave and LOVIN the house band.
