How many people realise that this song is about the Senior Brecon British Army Course? The lead singer of the Stone Roses was an ex-Para NCO- hence the reference to, "The back on my back is aching, the straps seem to cut me like a knife......." It's about Tabbing with a 100lb Bergen on Senior Brecon.

No idea what the song is about, the lyrics certainly lens themselves to your theory however, Melody Maker stated that the band said it was about greed when they interviewed them years ago. One thing I am a thousand percent certain of though is Ian Brown was and never has been in the Paras. I'm ex 3 Para mate and I definitely know he hasn't been in...he's not even been in the forces let alone the Paras.

It was about the folly of seeking promotion that involved a significant increase in responsibility, for not a lot of extra cash. Perhaps I was given duff gen mate! Being Canadian, we were torn between what was going on in Manchester or what was going on in Seattle.
