You'd have to be from the South to understand, but it's a cultural thing. We don't care quite as much about the NFL as we do about our college teams. And football is an institution; you're aware of it from the first time you attend a school with a team! Even high school football is big here.
@Elvis1237 I think your thinking of Football. You know the one where kick the ball for hours and score 1 goal? Yeah that one. Haha just joking. American football is boring I agree.
@akimball79 think again - michigan has the 3rd biggest stadium of any kind in the world, and they're a college football team. gotta hand it to the american fans, they're something else.
I do think there is a lack of context however...not EVERY college game is met with such grandure. That is ALABAMA...a major game in the deep south is THE MOST you will ever see in the USA for college football. I hope he doesn't really think ALL games are like that LOL
LOVE Fry, and overall, I think his analysis is spot on of our culture.
@akimball79 The fact is that there are 100's of games that reach this level of pageantry, and most others will approach it. Even smaller schools will put their very best forward. I don't know what USA your living in, but search any college football, north, south, east, and west. These events are very much a part of our culture, and are sources of state and national pride, and community involvement, that have been going on for 140+ years.

when Stephen Fry says its good, it must be good, and I say it looks like quite a bit of fun - but I don't particularly like American football having grown up watching Australian Football typically they are complete opposite games. but, I think, that would be one thing to do as an outsider, go to one of those events
@slicydicer Well I am an Auburn fan and I can tell you that this is not a typical sports event. People in Alabama and all over the south are CRAZY about (American) football.
Well, contrary to what Fry says, they're not "amateur students", like normal students who play sports purely for fun: they're players who are awarded scholarships (i.e. pay in lieu) purely based on their football - not academic - ability, their ultimate aim being the NFL, not professional careers. It would be more honest just to pay them, and ditch the pretence that they are students.
@crapatev Wow, your making an enormous generalization. Many amatuer athletes in every nation on the planet receive support, including housing, living expenses, etc. These players receive a free education. Considering the millions they bring to universities, it's a bargin. Also, considering that, grad rates are around 80%, the majority of NFL players obtain academic degrees, and less than 2% of college plyrs will make the NFL, your argument seems silly, and you seem angry & envious.
@bebomac5 You're either very naive or very dishonest. Any intelligent American knows these are professional athletes, albeit paid in "educational capital" rather than salary. There is nothing wrong with that - they work as hard as any professional sportsman - as long as you are honest that they're in college because they're good at football, not on academic merit. They are not just "amateur students", in the way, say, a rugby-playing student is. I can't believe you'll argue this point.
@crapatev As a person who received a great education, and thus career, via an athletic scholarship, as well as personally witnessing 100's of other do the same, I have to diagree with you. your opinion is based in perception and not in fact. Btw, a good portion of players at major Rugby schools, such as Cal and Utah, are there on full scholarship, what's the difference? In fact, what's the diff if someone receives a full scholarship for playing the violin, or acting? Are they pros?
@bebomac5 A normal scholarship funds someone who has entered college on academic merit. A football scholarship is awarded on gridiron merit. The difference is not difficult to see for people of normal intelligence.
@crapatev An academic scholarship is awarded on academic merit, Students who are awarded scholarships for athletics, dance, art, music, etc. must still meet academic requirements for entry to Academic institutions. Here are the main points, you can't simply stereotype, 80% of AF plyrs obtain a degree (FACT), you've been utterly Destoryed in this debate by a recipient of a 4yr Football scholarship.

Total and utter bollocks, and you know it. You must be a troll ... damn, fooled again ...
@crapatev There are more than 1.5 million high school plyrs in the US, Indeed there are 1000's who don't meet minimum requirements. It's up to the individual to decide if they wish to continue. many will enroll at Jr. Colleges, then attempt to transfer to a Div.1A, 1AA, and Div. 2 school. What would you say about the many NFL players who have attended Ivy league schools or institutions such as Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, Vanderbilt, or players who've received Rhodes Scholarships? It's almost inconceivable to other countries that people in America are prepared to spend this much money on sports games and not put it in the pot for a national health service
@SwordInAir Well, advertising dollars and sponsorships do not pay for health anywhere, and that is what powers college football. Many SEC schools (both of these) generate millions more than is spent, averaging around 8 -15 million $ paid back to the school at the end of the year. For many large universities, athletics is way to garner attention, and vast sums of money that can be spend on a variety of university needs.
This Saturday, this happens in my neighborhood, it is beyond belief, my normally peaceful little place, will be ground zero for cookouts, picnics and crap talk , until the game starts. This time, the auburn fans will go home early. It will be a peaceful beating. Roll Tide.
Any tourist looking for a complete "American" experience must include a sporting event in their travels. They are nothing but fun. Only one warning, avoid any football team named "Raiders". You will most likely be stabbed. Stick to a College event. Your chances of being stabbed are signifigantly less. Enjoy the USA!!!
@marty1901 Hehehe, good point! Still, the only football team I'd ever care to see if I were to go to a football event would be one named Raiders ;) I deeply enjoyed America when I lived and studied there, yet I didn't go to a single game. I much rather looked at the life in the ghettos (for example those in the great city of Oakland) or traveled the rural parts of the country. You don't have to see only glitter and glamor to enjoy America. Grit and dirt has a charm too! :)
To be fair you shouldn't judge all of the US by looking at alabama (or mississippi). It's a large diverse country and in my opinion the deep south represents the worst of it.
@Arikiel If you mean a humble people, who will take a stranger in off the street, than yeah sure, the "worst" of it. Fucking pathetic idiot. You probably have never even been here before.
@smallrossy Rugby Football, Gaelic Football, American Football, Canadian Football, Australian Rules Football, all derived from Association. Maybe you, like other's main issue is the fact that it has "American" in front of it. Hmm!
@infernoacid sooo u have never been to it yet u judge it. Never felt the vast solitude of the southwest, never seen new England foliage. I found this tame compared to soccer hooligans I've met.
is the insecurity of others from different country's,
i love how stephen is open minded and always exploring. but everyone else show their jealousy over a game .. lmao. i think its funny when they have big arena games its ok ..but oh noes.. the americans have it .its just wrong
@SaulMeyersz Butthurt much? Turning disgust into envy doesnt always work. Honestly, I might love being there once yet i still find it over the top. Which is an American tendency and it always has been.
Yes i do find it tacky too. For the kind of culture that i'm used to, going to american entertainment like that would be like going to Disney Land ( the american one is even more over the top than the european one ive heard ). Its fun for a couple of times, but im glad we dont do that.
@infernoacid funny you would watch this video, and think you have some sort of understanding of american culture. this video did a good job of showing the pageantry and bravado of a small southern football game. small towns tend to me more over the top as the local teams are the main attraction for the people there.
america is bigger than EU, and contains a lot of cultural diversity just as EU does. most euros dont really know this. they see some dumb Americans, and generalize us all.
@Bigbang14Z Honestly i have been obsessed with america all my life. I know all about your culture, and some things are just plain amazing in a good way.
I never tried to flame the USA in a whole. I never ever did that. Where did you see that in my comment? All i pointed towards is this exact type of sports celebration, which i do not like.
@lsmarters Maybe you should check the history of this "plastic bullshit" before condemning it. American Football and it's Amazing traditions have grown and continued for 140+ years. You think this just sprung up out of nowhere? You think this is the only place this happens? this takes place at 100's of schools, every Saturday of the season. Witness one of these spectacles in person, and I assure you you're tone will change. Learn the sport, and you will know why we celebrate it the way we do.
I'm both surprised and disappointed how ridiculously defensive my fellow Americans get and how aggressive the foreigners get in these comments. The whole point of the video is how ridiculous the whole affair is, and even if you're proud of it it's hard not to admit its a teeny bit excessive. And seriously, people, America is freaking massive, the reason these big events happen so much is because it would be backwater without them, let the people have their fun.
he didn't just say a bunch of crap about how we suck like i think many nonamericans would do when reporting on america
americans definitely love their sports lol
At the end, i'm not sure whether he's like "oh dear these people are so unbelievably religious" or if he's thinking "oh dear what an impressive show" lol
@nullsis I couldn't agree more with your statement about some people being as passionate about science. I happen to be VERY passionate about science, but I don't see how being passionate about a game has anything to do with people starving to death. So we should give up enjoyment in our own lives? There are plenty of other places money for that cause could come from, besides a football game. I think you put a little too much emphasis on this "game".
Glad you like our big game. Come on down to College Station sometime and experience a Texas A&M game, it's a different kind of experience, not as quintessential as Auburn, or most other schools. But still in the same mold, and awesome in and of itself. Gig 'Em.
I can't help but think about Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno acting gay at a football game when I see this. The crowd would be out for Stephen's blood if they knew his sexual orientation.
@brogin Uh. I'm from Alabama, and no they wouldn't. Yeah there are homophobic people as there are everywhere, but especially the college kids are not homophobic like at all. I know a gay interracial couple that go there. No problem. hard as it is to believe, Alabama HAS actually progressed in 40 years. Surpriseeeeee
@lilmisscatty watch?v=nSTukGu-Ut4 oh look, it's people from Alabama howling for the blood of a homosexual. Sorry but you live in a backwoods, dumbfuck, hillbilly state. You guys went from lynching blacks to lynching homosexuals, my how far you've come. Grow the fuck up and open your eyes.
@SaulMeyersz I didn't know you could form nations from jealous wankers, maybe that's how they made New England, all the wankers no one wanted in the UK anymore. And anyway to put the formation of Australia on my shoulders is a massive wrong, you do know the australian landmass was formed at least 96million years before I was born.
Why would I be jealous of a dying superpower anyway, you will be one of the shortest ruling empires when you crumble, soon come the day.
@RevNTheogen thats exactly my point why youre so jealous .all your comments are nothing but putdowns.
and insults. all cause stephan fry likes america. doest it matter it how long its last or how short it is .but youre point is your looking forward it to end.. which proves how insecure jealous wanker you are
@RevNTheogen if the USA dies (and it won't) where will you go to watch videos, chat, search and shop on the American-created Internet??
Every time you use YouTube, Google makes ad revenue and gives some of that money to the U.S. government in taxes...thus ensuring that we continue to be the dominant World's superpower
@RevNTheogen if the USA dies...and it won't...where will you go to watch videos, chat, search and shop on the American-created Internet??
Every time you use YouTube, Google makes ad revenue and gives some of that money to the U.S. government in taxes...thus ensuring that we continue to be the dominant World's superpower
@ChaseRocker WHEN the USA dies I shall not need to watch videos on the internet because there will be a glut of dancing in the street, people of all nations shall link arms and sing together in perfct harmony.
Also whenever I use youtube I remember that your economy is based on the wholesale slaughter and stand-over tactics of an international bully, almost perfectly resembles the roman empire in decline. As a nation you collapsing, the economy cannot sustain your lifestyle and the world
picks up the slack, well I tell you; I for one am sick and tired of hearing how the US is "bouncing back" after the credit crisis you caused fucked the rest of the world up.
Have you ever left the fucked up inbredc hick country you live in? If so you will know what people think of yournation aborad, If not; that probably explains your blindly following the propaghanda they shit out of fox news.
Eat another burger, forget the torture and the hate because profit is all important
@RevNTheogen Oh Come off it mate,You can't label an entire country, thats nonsense.Americans are quite lovely, and normal for the most part.Well Aside from there overwhelming cheeriness.
@slopri friend, this is a college game...amateur teams...NOT the professionals. Hundreds of these college games like this happen every Saturday here in America. The pros play on Sunday.
btw, Europe is a continent. The USA is a country.
As far as I know, there's better atmosphere in collage games than in pro games in america... so that's all you got, which is 1 % of the atmosphere that happens during football games in europe.
Love Auburn and Bama games all SEC games are intense it is just like world premier football over there. If you are not American I guess you just don’t get it. These schools football programs bring in million and millions of dollars to their schools. Love it. Go Bama
@edrice22 I do agree that some American commenters are responding a bit sensatively. Personally, I think Stephen was responding as any outside oberver, of an unfamiliar cultural phenomenon would, but seemed very much in awe of the spectacle. However, you have to admit that international commenters are often hostile towards America and all things American. Comments are frequently hate filled, misconceived, and misinformed. "Brits are not our enemy", but some act like it. /watch?v=yduYeO14cBI
Personally, I love the Star Spangled Banner, but never say never. And btw, you do know the title of England's national anthem is God Save The Queen,...don't you?
@ImperialGeorge I believe you are referring to the west not the mid-west, and rectangular states such as Colorado and Wyoming have more natural beauty than you could fathom.
It was a jest. You can leave your blood-soaked banner, your mumbled national anthem and your corpulent foods 'til the next time you become jingoistically patriotic.
*educate* a typo, before you start, lol ;) Just want to add that I don't hate or even dislike the US one bit (the very opposite in fact and I have many American mates), I just saw some 'Brit bashing' and responded. Neither of our countries are perfect, with differences. But there is more commonality than division, for very obvious reasons as we are Cousins. A few thousand people rioting does not denote the end of Civilisation, its happening worldwide (Berlin just had a big riot last week) Peace.
@xRawlins Then what's Penn State's excuse? How about Notre Dame or Oregon? Don't trash Other states. Each has its's own uniqe history, and great traditions. "All" are united under ONE flag!..New Yorker btw.
@stereoroid What does God have to do with respecting the American National Anthem. Everyone takes off their hat and puts their hand on their heart as a sign of respect.
@flatl1n3 So at what point, in this video, do they play the National Anthem, then? Not at 2:48, when they play "God Bless America", which is NOT your anthem. Don't you know you know your own National Anthem?
@stereoroid God Bless America is connsidered our unofficial natl anthem, and a number of states and organizations have petitioned to make it the official.
@bebomac5 Only in "bible belt" states, perhaps, but Stephen is from England and doesn't care about religion. The USA is not a "Christian country", and "God Bless America" will never become the official national anthem: it would violate the Establishment Clause in the Bill of Rights and get thrown down by the Supreme Court in no time at all.
wow!

Any tourist looking for a complete "American" experience must include a sporting event in their travels. They are nothing but fun. Only one warning, avoid any football team named "Raiders". You will most likely be stabbed. Stick to a College event. Your chances of being stabbed are signifigantly less. Enjoy the USA!!!
marty1901 3 months ago 14
@marty1901 Hehehe, good point! Still, the only football team I'd ever care to see if I were to go to a football event would be one named Raiders ;) I deeply enjoyed America when I lived and studied there, yet I didn't go to a single game. I much rather looked at the life in the ghettos (for example those in the great city of Oakland) or traveled the rural parts of the country. You don't have to see only glitter and glamor to enjoy America. Grit and dirt has a charm too! :)

To be fair you shouldn't judge all of the US by looking at alabama (or mississippi). It's a large diverse country and in my opinion the deep south represents the worst of it.

america is far to diverse in culture and massive in size for anybdy whos lived there their entirely life to fully understand.
goodday306 3 months ago
my favorite part of all this..
is the insecurity of others from different country's,
i love how stephen is open minded and always exploring. but everyone else show their jealousy over a game .. lmao. i think its funny when they have big arena games its ok ..but oh noes.. the americans have it .its just wrong
SaulMeyersz 3 months ago 2
@SaulMeyersz Jealousy? Hardly, subtlety speaks volumes. The events in this video are just tacky.
soundslave 3 months ago
@soundslave tacky hahah. its none of your business how we play our games.
you dont see us mocking the liverpool football club-anthem is from an american musical.
and you hear the whole crowd singing it.
and we dont mock it..
it just makes me laugh how jealous you are.
how we live our lives is none of your business,
but the put down comments make me laugh so hard. it shows what you lack.
SaulMeyersz 3 months ago
@SaulMeyersz Again you say jealous. Why would I be jealous of a plastic xmas tree with fake snow on it. That is how tacky your country is.
soundslave 3 months ago
@soundslave cause you keep commenting on it.
if you didnt care you wouldnt comment.
but everytime you do it proves how jealouse you are ..
here stephen is enjoying it commenting on it.. and just being open minded .
but you are green with envy and must put down everything .even talking about a fake tree.
if we had a real tree you probably say look they wasted money in getting a real tree..]
just move on with your life. no matter how sad it is.
SaulMeyersz 3 months ago
@SaulMeyersz Butthurt much? Turning disgust into envy doesnt always work. Honestly, I might love being there once yet i still find it over the top. Which is an American tendency and it always has been.
Yes i do find it tacky too. For the kind of culture that i'm used to, going to american entertainment like that would be like going to Disney Land ( the american one is even more over the top than the european one ive heard ). Its fun for a couple of times, but im glad we dont do that.
infernoacid 3 months ago
@infernoacid funny you would watch this video, and think you have some sort of understanding of american culture. this video did a good job of showing the pageantry and bravado of a small southern football game. small towns tend to me more over the top as the local teams are the main attraction for the people there.
america is bigger than EU, and contains a lot of cultural diversity just as EU does. most euros dont really know this. they see some dumb Americans, and generalize us all.
Bigbang14Z 3 months ago
@Bigbang14Z Honestly i have been obsessed with america all my life. I know all about your culture, and some things are just plain amazing in a good way.
I never tried to flame the USA in a whole. I never ever did that. Where did you see that in my comment? All i pointed towards is this exact type of sports celebration, which i do not like.
infernoacid 3 months ago
I've never been so glad to live in a country with REAL sports, not this plastic bullshit.
lsmarters 3 months ago
@lsmarters jealous? let me see your whole 3 sports.. footbal rugby and cricket..
thats it and yet here you are turning green with envy at us.
SaulMeyersz 3 months ago
@lsmarters Maybe you should check the history of this "plastic bullshit" before condemning it. American Football and it's Amazing traditions have grown and continued for 140+ years. You think this just sprung up out of nowhere? You think this is the only place this happens? this takes place at 100's of schools, every Saturday of the season. Witness one of these spectacles in person, and I assure you you're tone will change. Learn the sport, and you will know why we celebrate it the way we do.
bebomac5 3 months ago
I'm both surprised and disappointed how ridiculously defensive my fellow Americans get and how aggressive the foreigners get in these comments. The whole point of the video is how ridiculous the whole affair is, and even if you're proud of it it's hard not to admit its a teeny bit excessive. And seriously, people, America is freaking massive, the reason these big events happen so much is because it would be backwater without them, let the people have their fun.
Zephanus 3 months ago

@nullsis I couldn't agree more with your statement about some people being as passionate about science. I happen to be VERY passionate about science, but I don't see how being passionate about a game has anything to do with people starving to death. So we should give up enjoyment in our own lives? There are plenty of other places money for that cause could come from, besides a football game. I think you put a little too much emphasis on this "game".

wow.... perhaps americans are a wee bit insular?
and perhaps americans take themselves a little too seriously?
the brits have a great sense of humor... and they have the ability to laugh at themselves, and do that often.
it's really interesting to see from the posts here how quickly americans get defensive and then go on the offensive. brits are not our enemies.
edrice22 5 months ago
@edrice22 I do agree that some American commenters are responding a bit sensatively. Personally, I think Stephen was responding as any outside oberver, of an unfamiliar cultural phenomenon would, but seemed very much in awe of the spectacle. However, you have to admit that international commenters are often hostile towards America and all things American. Comments are frequently hate filled, misconceived, and misinformed. Neither of our countries are perfect, with differences. But there is more commonality than division, for very obvious reasons as we are Cousins. A few thousand people rioting does not denote the end of Civilisation, its happening worldwide (Berlin just had a big riot last week) Peace.

@bebomac5 Only in "bible belt" states, perhaps, but Stephen is from England and doesn't care about religion.
