  • Part Two of My Story: What do people who live out there do when they get bitten??? The closest hospital is probably in Sharon Springs or Weskan and those towns are about 20 miles or more away! By the time it would take to drive to a hospital or clinic, the bite will already be doing damage to the body and from what I have been told, the prairie rattler's venom is about in the middle of the snake family for its toxicity. Anyhow, next time I am there to see a sunset, I will have a flashlight!

  • This reminded me of my only encounter (hopefully last!!) with a rattlesnake in the wild. It was a HUGE prairie rattler at Mount Sunflower in Kansas near the Colorado border at sunset in September of 2005. When I was going to my rental car, I saw the rattler and it saw me. It then went under the car and stayed coiled. Funny thing, though, that it NEVER rattled but just hissed! Anyhow, I moved the car and snake moved on. Not sure who was more scared: THE SNAKE OR ME!!!!

  • It's a latino snake. Hisssspanic!

  • Hey dude, just a thought...when a rattlesnake coils up into spring position and rattles at high speeds as if it's about to strike, that's probably a good time NOT to move in for closeup.

  • @BrosMathias - I hear you, but if I didn't do that, you wouldn't have watched my vid. Check out "Black Rattlesnake Strikes". It's a vid where we found an evil looking black rattler. Btw, we've encountered 100's of rattlesnakes. We never handle them, just film.

  • @BrosMathias I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing...

  • your nutss

  • beautiful snake

  • Where is this?

  • @dimas143jajaja - Colorado

  • I had a close encounter with one of these things in South Dakota. They blend in so well with their environment you can nearly step on them without knowing. Long story short, human beings can jump backwards a good 6 feet.

  • @Vladi306 - lol 6 ft huh? they do blend in w/ the surroundings, scary at times.

  • @Vladi306 lol, my teacher had the same experience, except it was dark. He said when he heard the rattling he jumped straight up a few feet!

  • these looks like mi mother when is angry .....

  • Its so awesome that they have such defenses installed when they feel threatened. We have so many here in az

  • Now that is one nice looking snake.

  • its good you left him, the snake, alown

  • I don't understand the snake's psychology here. I thought the S-coil always meant that a strike was imminent. Plus pit vipers are known for being far more aggressive than pythons.

Did you back off which in turn calmed him down or did he change his mind and just slither away?

I'm no snake expert but people are always told to use extreme caution since rattlesnakes are easily threatened and can strike even when unprovoked.

This little guy seems all rattle and no bite. :-p

  • @DoubleTalkingJive - I'm no expert either, but I'm pretty sure the S coil is to make the snake look bigger. They can definitely strike from that position though. I've come across 100's of rattlesnakes over the years and each one is different. Most of my encounters are pretty chill unless the snake feels threatened in some way. This one was obviously bothered by my vid camera. He/she never struck once and eventually moved on its way.

  • That tongue made me laugh. Beautiful snake!

  • We encountered one of these while walking in Sluice Boxes State Park (MT). It saw us before we saw it and immediately retreated. I only caught its upturned tail, but my mom clearly saw the whole thing. She freaked out. I didn't see the head, but I can estimate that the snake was about three feet long--typical of this species.

  • i would have killed it and kept the skin and rattle they are so amazeing!

  • Wonderfull !!! :))

  • FUCK. THAT. SHIT.

  • I cant believe it even allowed you to get that close.

  • @TheFutureFirefighter - pretty wild, those prairie rattlesnakes here in CO are usually pretty cranky.

  • his tounge looks like one of those toys you find at your kids birthday party! Ö

  • pissed off

  • @salemhodson ...then you'd die from lead poisoning..go for it

  • @salemhodson brilliant !

  • @salemhodson Wow. I hope you get bitten jerk.

  • he seems upset......maybe he needs a hug

  • @MrTelepicker - lol. not from me.

  • butt very quik and full off venom he looks hungry

  • It's a Prairie rattlesnake and they have one of the largest ranges of all the rattlesnakes in the western USA. They range all the way from MX to Canada.

  • xkiss are you stupid its a western dimon back

  • rob knows what hes doin and western diamond backs dont live in colorado, thats where rob lives

  • true dat. no wdb's here. az has 'em though.

  • Most ppl dont know it but the Prairie Rattlesnake is one of the most foul and venomous of all the rattlesnakes; and they NEVER hesitate to take a bite at you if they can. They're found n a very small range area in the US, but jesus are they foul.

  • yeah they get a little grumpy.

  • man that is the fastest rattle i have heard sounded like a little motor running

  • that snake looks like its ready to attack...

  • probably was, didn't strike once though.

  • kinda dumb....

    cuz hes very pissed off...

in striking stance and everything lol

  • he wasn't in striking distance of me, can't reveal all my secrets though.

  • that's cool

  • Nice close ups and the sound is great! I got a rattlesnake on video the other day, but he didn't rattle nearly as loud as this one!
