  • The bass is crazy in the chorus

  • skate to the studio, skate back

  • MI ECUADOOOOR COTOPAXI!

  • SOS - Son of Steve Perry

  • the 11/8 part is sweet but don't forget the other section (bridge?) is in 9 (groupings of 5 and 4). Very tricky feel as well.

  • Bass line is insane!

  • Comment removed

  • What album is this on?

  • @mikelusmc12 octahedron

  • Mega dope.

  • whta the fuck is 11/8???

  • @StenooLive The time signature of the song

  • @OscarCousin Not the entire song

  • @StenooLive Time signature that most "prog rock" is known for. Many drummers can't pull it off; but Thomas Pridgen owns that shit!

  • vocalist looks like jose mourinho

  • 666 like.. 6 dislikes

  • which album is this off?

  • @SolTetto Octahedron, released in '09, great album.

  • jesus christ, listen to that bass line....amaaaazing..I now need to lay down

  • I almost have this song nailed (drums) but I just cannot get the middle part on snare and bass drum (from about 2:08) to work properly.

I'm fine with the hands, but when the bass drum joins in (at around 2:30) it's like your feet and hands have to be playing two different time signatures and I just don't have the processing power in my brain.

Pridgen is incredible, they were fools to get rid of him.

  • @alihire lol its not that hard

  • @alihire

don't try to work them out seperately. Write out the snare part - it's 4/4,5/4 and then figure out where the bass drum falls on or in between beats. practice playing the bass drum on the on- and off-beats and dotted quarter notes. It will make sense eventually. The important thing about playing odd time signatures is to be able to think and play over the bar line, otherwise you end up sounding like a broken record.

    glgl

  • It's more like a measure of 4/4 followed by one of 3/8. Same number of counts as 11/8, I know, but it reflects the rhythmic feeling better. The chorus is 4/4, and the middle section is 4/4 followed by 5/4

  • What an incredible song!

  • Pridgen's wearing a shirt?

  • I like the singer's helmet

  • If you guys think this is "epic" in terms of time signatures.....listen to Dream Theater, then come back to me.

  • @retop56 with all the respect to DT, my dear friend, this comment is a TOTAL FAIL.

  • @retop56 BOTH bands are awesome and both bands have crazy time signatures and rhythms. Gotta admit i prefer TMV; i prefer their more bluesy/Latin melodies and Cedric's voice but Dream Theater are up there with some of my favourite bands ever :)

  • @retop56 Time signatures? Try Protest the Hero. Or Dillinger Escape plan. But yeah, DT is absolutely epic. Dance of Eternity is a nightmare in terms of time changes. But most of their songs don't usually get that crazy.

  • I love how the director chose to never show Juan, especially when he was playing these great technical bass licks... oh wait... NO I FUCKING DON"T!

  • Juan is one CRAZY Mutha Fucka!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song is why they're The Mars Volta and everyone else isn't.

  • if you like odd time signatures , listen to Aka Moon

  • it kicked my ass

  • Their singer saying at the start he found it hard to make the song sound less angular...he did a great job; well, they all did, cos it doesn't really sound like a crazy time signature; it really flows well. I didn't pay attention when i 1st heard the song but when you listen yeah it is 11/8 but doesn't sound mismatched like some odd time-sig songs do! They're awesome :D

  • @andthemushrooms123 He failed, but he did what he could. Try and move your head with that stupid ass drum beat during the verses. It doesnt feel right. It's angular and annoying no matter what the singer does, so there was nothing Cedric could do. People like to move their heads, and it just doesnt feel right to this stupid time signature and beat. Part of why this band still is not very famous. Trying so hard to be different that you cant even feel the music properly. It's so awkward.

  • @trenken It's mainly in 11/8. Count to 11 pretty fast in the riff and it fits. It's a very unusual rhythm for rock music but it works. If you don't agree its probably because you're not used to music in unusual time signatures. While 4/4 and 6/8 are nice to listen to cos they're the norm, its interesting to hear others. I learnt to play this on guitar and sing with it so i know how it fits; it gives the song an uneasy feel which is what they're probably aiming for.I don't mind not moving my head.

  • @trenken It's not as difficult and awkward to feel and move to as it may seem. In the verse, four solid beats and a pickup of 3 half beats. 4/4 then 3/8. Watch the guitarist cause that's exactly how he feels it.

  • @ctoacsn I agree entirely. The majority of this song is not difficult feel out at all, the only curve ball I see is the Bridge/Breakdown sections where it is alternating between 4/4 and 5/4. I think the reason it throws me off is due to the interplay between the guitar and drums. Either way, I feel this song flows amazingly and is one of the tightest efforts.

  • Would be so cool to be at their level. Some of their songs are OK to play, on bass anyway.....But this kind of song must be so difficult. 11/8? Most peculiar indeed.....I really admire these guys-They do something most musicians wouldn`t dare even try-something querky, does what many would call "wrong" things, but it works. Very well too. I have high admiration for the singer also-The wide vocal range he has, and being able to go from high to low in one breath. Great work they have produced.

  • This is what happens when you put some of the best musicians in the world in a room.

  • omfg bass player if awesome

  • Omar and Pridgen are having so much fun here!

  • when i see them chating at the begining, they're still my rock gods, and then they play and it gets so cruel. I've grown with these guys and i don't get this music. Who are they playing for now? snob hipsters? omar inspired me to grab a guitar in the first place. i cried when i lost atdi but even then i was the first human being to ever hear concertina and roulette dares i remember hitting refresh button on the website to hear first songs of the new band the mars volta. Fuck this. R.I.P. ATDI

  • @seiter13 Hipster idiot that doesn't understand musical progress number 1,425,347. Congratulations hipster. This song fucking MOVES.

  • @jaymanela ?

  • Big nasty ass !!! I love these guys they have something different and it's strong

  • Easleytee is on crack he said Zappa was doing this style but better ha no fucking way bro these guys are in no way comparable to Zappa ! Zappa in his own right was killer .

But Mars Volta got some ass bro

  • Juan Alderete!!! es un cabron!!!! es un papuki....

  • I hear Axel Rose.

  • bass line during the chorus is out of this world

  • these drums sound better than the ones recorded on the studio recording... huge

  • wow did he go back to the 70's in a time machine and borrow kevin keegans barnet for this gig?

  • i'm not sure if my favorite TMV song is Cotopaxi or Viscera Eyes. The live version is awesome. Search Viscera Eyes Yahoo in youtube if you haven't seen it yet. But damn cotopaxi just flat out rocks!!

  • Cedric sounds great here. You have to give him a lot of credit for being over 30 and being able to hit those notes.

  • I wanna shoot the cameramen for not filming the bassist durings the choruses.

What is so fucking interesting about watching Omar plowing chords with a ton of wah when the bassist is going absolutely mental?

  • To me, one of the best moments of the band, pridgen and the wind instrument guys will be missed....

  • Omar takes his glasses off all casual at the end like "Yeah, that shit just happened. But I'm playing it off like it's no big deal."

  • Zappa was doing this shit some 35+ years ago...and far better.

    Check out Uncle Meat.

    Dolts.

  • @Easleytee No questions about that. But I don't think you should even mention Zappa to talk about Mars Volta. It's a somewhat unfare battle. Nevertheless, not many bands groove like this in 11/8, u gotta give them credit for that.

  • THE NEWER THE MUSIC THE NEWER THE DRUMMER....JON THEADORE THE HARDEST ONE.... MY OPINION

  • My dick neighbor: "11/8 hasn't gotten anyone pussy since the 70's."

Me: "Have you heard of The Mars Volta?"

  • @a1gold176 "like a boss"

  • @a1gold176 idk if the mars volta has ever seen or heard of pussy unless its cedrics... fucking cocksucking mexican

  • @a1gold176 hey goldfarb, you ever heard of pussy you fucking tool. im guna cut off cedrics ball fro of his head, wipe lopresti's ass with it, put it in 11/8 all ram it up your dickhole you lil douche. 11/8 sucks maybe if you didnt play covers all the time you would be able to play better than 11/8. im guna butt rape paul green.btw this is keith stienberg and funuka

  • That time change at at 2:45 is a bitchhhhhhhhhh. Hard to get down perfectly for sure. I'm gonna throw my guitar out the window.

  • @lllChokelll I like drumming to this song, I just think of it as a 4/4 measure then a 5/4 measure, or just 2 4/4 measures with a 1 beat drum solo every other one

  • Juan tears that bass up!

  • Cedric looks like fucking Frodo at the start of this.

  • the drummer needs to move a little more.. he seems kind of stiff and uptight..

  • @underscoredrums Don't think he's in the band anymore.

  • @gdhamell gardening accident?

  • @underscoredrums Is that sarcasm? Sure hope so.

  • @underscoredrums

i think he's busy making people shit their pants with his amazing drumming skills man. no offense though not trying to be a dick lol

  • @qarDZebra haha i was bein a smart ass brotha. he's a crazy drummer i saw these guys at sasquatch a couple years ago. they're all motherfuckers hahaha

  • who the hell rocks in 11/8. mars volta that's fuckin who

  • @seamouse007 who rocks in 13/8 you bitch? billy mays is the answer you cocksucker

  • compases irregulares!!!!!! :D me encantaaaa!!!!...

  • does anybody knows the time signature of this song?

  • Comment removed

  • @tupacrulznxr thanks ;)

  • @SloppyLoveJingle 11/8 verses, 4/4 chorus, breakdown etc, bars of 4/4+5/4

  • @tupacrulznxr @tupacrulznxr It's fucking crazy isn't it, and they are so tight.. I guess you could say the breakdown is an additive of: 4+5/4. But that's just silly talk :)

  • @SloppyLoveJingle its a few different ones depending on the section of the song

  • Now that's electric bass.

  • The funny part, Juan is old enough to be Thomas's dad!

Juan was playing in the hair metal band Racer X back in the 80's (look up scarified 1988 to see a vid)....back when he was just "John".

He's easily 22-23 years OLDER than Thomas.

BTW, what's your dad doing tonight?...bet he's not playing in your favorite band...lol!

  • Led Zeppelin + Black sabbath + Jimi Hendrix = The Mars Volta

  • thumbs up enrique jose!!!! vas pal show en Puerto Rico?

  • thumbs up enrique jose!!!! vas pal show en Puerto Rico?

  • Omar Rodriguez es puertorrique~o !!! :D thumbs up if you understand me!

  • The Mars Volta : "We consider Octahedron to be our Acoustic Album."

    (Cotopaxi comes on)

    The World: "Wait, what?"

  • Awesome! Juan is class but the whole band kicks my ass!

  • asshole cameramen never show Juan doing his thing shame.

  • fuck the break is pure magic ;D

  • Thomas = Pure energy

  • drummer is insane !

  • this band isn't as wierd as people think they are

  • the 4 motherfuckers that disliked this video is deaf, and hates the world of music because they can't hear the awesomeness that comes with it.

  • Que buena canción .. Los ojos Cedric <3 Su magnífica voz!!!!!!!

  • cotopaxi que tema copado!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is from their "acoustic" album. ha

  • viva mexico cabrones!

  • I had never noticed the crazy walking bass in the chorus in this song. Very impressive!

  • TMV has such great bass because Omar used to play bass and is essentially a bass player still. I mean come on, he uses triads on guitar like they are going out of style. Juan is simply the shit for pulling off anything Omar throws at him. Juan is not some creative genius, so he fits into the support role perfectly. And the man is a fuckin ton of titanium with Niagara falls running all around him. So solid that he keeps the Omar/Cedric/Pridgen shit-storm together.

  • @TinAGuitar Very true, well-said.

  • totally agree

  • bass player is fucking insane epic

  • @fortress8 Juan Fuckin' Alderete :)

  • @fortress8 The bass player is Juan Alderete from Racer X. He's a fantastic bassist!

  • @fortress8 he has an insane understanding with Pridgen and Omar. Mars Volta are so tight!!!

  • @fortress8 true but their all fucking sick epic

  • @fortress8 i just thinking the same, drum and bass

  • @medicinalsnowball LOL GO AWAY

  • I just fking love this song

  • fuck thomas pridgen

  • Cedric is the only singer i have ever heard that doesn't lose any tone when i hear him live. it's effing awesome.

  • Since when did they hire Frodo to sing for them?

  • @medicinalsnowball Hahhahahaha you made me laugh but I hate your comment at the same time

  • the point is that sounds a 11/8 for everybody, even if he want to put under, then sound out of time,

@Jackwell1029384756 bis, music ain´t about the numbers!

  • one bar of 4/4 then one of 3/8 is virtually the same as 11/8. Either way it's so syncopated that there is no 'right' way to put it under haha

  • YES!!!!!

  • @Jackwell1029384756 When it comes down to it, does it matter? Music ain't about the numbers

  • Rush is too cheesy for me.

  • 11/8

  • @FnkDrms89 no i figured it out with my drem teacher, i thought it was 11/8 too but now i think it's one bar of 4/4 and one bar of 3/8

  • @Jackwell1029384756 that is the same thing as 11/8

  • @cooliovasquez yea but it just feels more natural to count it my way, there's no right or wrong way to count it

  • holy shit i can't figure out the time signature in the verse, does anyone know what it is?

  • bass licks bass licks bass licks bass licks

  • I am glad though that they had a really good sound guy for this show.

  • and ikey

  • they are like the new rush

  • @MajkeTiTvoje I like TMV, a lot, but they cant touch Rush. First of all, Neil is a FAR greater lyricist then Cedric is. Geddy actually sings on key all the time live, unlike Cedric, and as a band Rush has covered many different styles of music, where TMV basically just sticks to the same thing and mixes that up a bit, but they havent expanded like Rush did. Rush is legendary, they were before any of them even hit 30 years old, TMV are in their mid-late 30s and are basically still underground.

  • @trenken i agree. Rush is one of my all time favourites. But if you look at todays music and what it offers you must admit TMV is quite an impressive and innovative band. And wasnt Peart voted as one of the worst lyricists in rock? I find them quite intelligent and thoughtful

  • @trenken Yeah he was voted that by some dude that obviously didnt have the intelligence to even comprehend the things Neil writes about. Cedrics lyrics dont do anything for me. They're overly abstract and awkward. Neils lyrics have taught me things. TMV is close to what Rush is than most bands out there these days, but they still cant touch Rush.

  • hope mars volta find another drummer as good a THomas.

  • @thescientistpr chances are, they won't.

  • @kkphi08 Did Thomas quit!?

  • @thescientistpr

Have you seen Deantoni Parks? My god what a drummer they picked up..probably the best they've ever had.

  • @XxShindouxX he is a AWSOME drummer but no better than Thomas.

  • @thescientistpr

Meh, you know maybe you're right, maybe I am. I actually don't think any of their drummers are better than each other. They all just have different styles that they express differently. All unique in a way.

  • 11/8 :D

  • the drummer and bassist are tight******

  • this is a fucking amazing video, i love the mars volta with passion

    the drummer is tight

the guitarist is in the zone

the singer is creating visions through words

the effects are taking me to the next dimension

peace be with all and listen to the mars volta

    x

  • Does people know there even exist a bass player? Haven't seen or heard much of this band, but it pisses me off that its so hard to film bass players. I find them 10x as interresting to watch than guitarists, and the bass line in this song seems sweet.

  • @Sargatha Juan Alderete is a fucking beast. People need to figure that out.

  • @Sargatha I ask myself this question all the time.

  • bass line is the best part of this song.

  • It seems as if all these Abbey Road recordings are a lot tighter/cleaner. Like they weren't on drugs when this was recorded.

  • the music is just a free expression, not a competition, this is just a mirror of what they felt the moment they wrote it, they never said "oh i´m a the bes, everything else is shitt"

  • dirty thomas having sex with the drums again ,love that boy

  • Juan's playing through this whole song is amazing

  • Cedric reminds an old fart like me of Rob Tyner. This shit is god!

  • <3

  • this was one of pridgens last performans right? by that date he left the band i think

  • I just cant understand how these fuckers can be so stupid to lose such a badass drummer like thomas..... man that dude was the perfect beat for the mars volta..... i love tmv but these fools gotta give more credit to their band mates.... these two lil fuckers gotta recognize that its not only about them.........

  • The weakest part of this band is obviously Cedric. Sorry he is just not a great singer. He sounds fine on the albums of course, most singers sound great in a studio, but like this guy is pretty awful. Trying to sing outside of his range. Needs to start writing lower.

  • @trenken You're right, maybe Cedric sometimes tries to sing above his range, but in the mars volta, Cedric's voice is just another instrument, not more or less important than the bass or drums. Togheter they make the most psychedelic sound i've ever heard...

Oh and they have lots of songs that are in a lower range... Those songs are like The Mars Volta's version of chill... Have you ever heard Octahedron by chance?

  • @Lyron7 Yeah I have that album. Its just clear since he's getting older he just hand hit those extreme highs anymore. He's never able to do it live, he just needs to start writing in a lower key and he'll sound much better.

  • @trenken what do you mean with hand hit?..

Music is more about what you create, not what you can recreate live, at least that's what i think =)

I love what he does.. actually his lyrics mixed with melodies, and knowing exactly where the songs asks for a scream, and flowing so well in weird music omar creates, cedric is my favorite singer.

Anyway.. in desperate graves he hits one of the highest notes he ever did in a song from TMV (not including live performances), so he's not going lower, yet.

  • @sebaba001 This is a rock band, what they can do live is kind of important, because it makes them look like they are unable to reproduce what they can in the studio. The band itself is always good live, but Cedric is not. He can hit those note in a studio when he can keep trying it and use the best takes, but live this guy can NEVER hit these notes well. He's in his mid-30's now and his skills are going down, it happens to every single singer out there. So now he needs to just start writing low.

  • its like rage against the machine, stevie wonder, and Jamiroquai all in one

  • juan is the cornerstone

  • Jazz made love to rock.

They named the child The Mars Volta.

    Awwhh.

  • @jedphelym Actually jazz made love to rock way before the Mars Volta. The first jazz fusion album is "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis. These guys are heavily influenced the jazz fusion and prog-rock acts that came before.

  • @PoeticJustice05 But "In a Silent Way" was released before Bitches Brew...

  • @jedphelym

i think they named him the mahavishnu orchestra...but maybe not

  • @1juggly Awesome band didnt know of them untii I heard TMV but there are the pioneers of this type of music in my eyes.

  • @jedphelym It seems you've never heard of the Mahavishnu Orchestra ;)

  • @jedphelym UUUAAAGGGHHH YEEEAAAAHHH....

  • @jedphelym It gave birth to many before the Volta. King Crimson, et all.

  • @jedphelym that's what prog newbies actually believe

  • Thomas Pridgen, one of the best drummers for me, love this band

    great musicians.

  • ok, I went and checked out that band 'closure in moscow' and you sent me to a god damn emo shit band....how in the world you link that pretty boy gay shit music to the epicness of the volta eludes me, you sir have a very misguided sense in music.

  • @shitfeast Thanks for the heads up.

  • @shitfeast

but how come I and some of my friends like both those bands, I think mars volta has plenty of emotion.
