We apparently don't like to build infrastructure for anything other than cars. Consequently, Metro Link and Amtrak use Union Pacific's single track. UP's freight trains have the right of way, so passenger trains constantly have to pull over. It's pretty inefficient, and the occasional tragedy does happen.
