This went to No 1 in USA and Canada, but strangely only reached 7 in the UK. It was also Jim Kerr's least favourite Minds song, but is the one they will be remembered most for by the general public! They went a long way since I saw them playing in the Mars Bar pub in Glasgow in the late 70s!!
I was fortunate enough to grow up during this time; was the summer of 11th grade for me, and I'll never forget this concert. It was the world's focus and all everyone talked about. The pop music was just pouring out talent back then, throughout the 80's, with the members themselves writing/performing and even producing the songs, making the collaborations that much more special.
@graculareligiosa1 I totally agree with you. . . Dont know the guy's name, but I always liked his groove. I watched every second of LiveAid and I still thrill to see and listen to these clips. Guess this Internet thing is good for something after all ! ! !
I believe that "The Breakfast Club" was The Best Movie of 1985. The thing is, had it been releasted in, like, September, it would have had a greater shot at winning at least 1 OSCAR. This song not only should have been nominated, had it been nominated, it would have won. Too bad movies like "The Breakfast Club" aren't being made in Hollywood; Rest in Peace, John Hughes!

@roberth1964 There's two versions of the studio version so that might be why we're not seeing eye to eye lol. The fill is the same in the one I've been listening to. It's just really hard to hear the toms and crashes at the end of fill in the live version.
My man, Mel Gaynor...what a fucking beast on the drums!!!!! I love his passion for playing. This is exactly how I think a musician should play live. :-) Great band too, by the way. Cheers to all the Simple Minds' fans! :-)
Research it? I was around at the time. In the US the term New Wave referred to bands such as Blondie. In the UK New Wave was a musical style originating from the UK Punk era.Real Punk i.e. Sex Pistols, The Damned etc...bands such as The Ruts, Boomtown Rats etc.More musically sophisticated and more palateable to the general public and ultimately more commercial. than Punk.Even The Jam were seen as New Wave. The movement died-off with the rise of Ska/Two-Tone in the UK in 79/80 :)
@bankruptstate So, you're from the UK? I had in mind Modern English, The Psychedelic Furs, Blondie, Talking Heads, Thompson Twins, The Fixx, Joe Jackson, The Cars, Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, I could go on.
But yeah, you know what you're talking about. I am a huge real punk fan. and Post-Punk (manchester scene) for that matter.
Stadium rock in the US to most US people is associated with Hair Metal.
What great music that year had 1985. Love saying that word 1985. Who's gonna remember 2011 or the last 10 years before that in 20 years time? But the 1980's ? an eternity.
That was a phenomenal live performance. That's about as close as you can get to studio perfection. The reason why i love the 80's is because they were so much fun and sentimental years.
A ver con quien de los actuales se podría repetir un concierto como el Live Aid.... No digáis nada, habria que volver a llamar a los mismos y resucitar a algunos.

@downwithisrael1 Let us not forget things like new kids on the block. Same kind of thing. Assembled by a record company to make money. Is it more so today? Probably. But it was bad back then too. Far to many people look at say the 80's and completely forget how mass produced it was. I for one am a fan of hair metal. But after you get through the 8 or 10 big groups of the day, the rest began to truly all sound the same. And that is in large part due to record companies.
