  • Hard To Believe that he once was drummer for Ozzy lol

  • The quality of this performance is DS's quality that also happens to be similar in tone to SP. Simple! It's not better or worse because it "is" or "is not" better or worse..."a rating" as given by many as compared to SP is a comment on the listener's preference that is understandably colored by a listeners passion for either SP's or DS's voice, the band's body of work, and likely more importantly this one standout (DS) against SP's vast body of work with the band and solo.

  • IN MY OPINION THEY'LL LOOK A DRUMMER TO REPLACE DEEN SO THAT DEEN WILL SINGS JOURNEY SONG, WHAT DO YOU THINK??? OR DEEN CAN SING ONLY THREE SONGS AND HIS VOICE WILL BE FADED>>>>

  • amazing.. nothing can paint a musician's heart..

  • Wow brilliant

  • You need to change the title of this upload. Arnel Pineda can't sing Mother Father live so Deen Castronovo has to and other Journey hit songs also eg Still They Ride.

No other band member of Journey sang the songs live for Steve Perry when he was lead singer.

It seems ridiculous to me to have a current lead singer in a famous band like Journey who doesn't have the vocal ability in his singing voice to sing certain hit songs of theirs live so another member of that band now has to for him.

  • Deen is the Best

  • that guy can sing! i had no idea he sang in the band!!! he sounds just like steve!

  • Oh the face of Neil Schon HORRORRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • @yanli1 The best YouTube comment ever!!!

  • Deen is the best

  • Wow the voice Deen!!!!! wowwwwwwwwwwwww

  • Steve Perry is better than anybody!

  • @Aislekelly not sure

  • @yanli1 I am sure definitely! : )

  • DEEN 1000 times better than Arnel

  • This guy is the CLOSEST to Steve Perry that I have heard yet....It seems as though they are always trying to copy Steve...Deen is a Great singer and captures the "perry" voice well..I just wish the rest of the band would realize that anyone can "learn" how to play an instrument...but a VOICE is GOD GIVEN!!!!

  • @pokengo Why do they always have to try and replace Steve Pery with a singer they think sounds him? Oh yeah because Steve Perry was the one who gave them all the hit albums, songs and fans worldwide in the first place due to his amazing, emotive and oh so powerful singing voice live.

Do they not realise by now they can't replace ''The Voice'' with ''a voice''? There is only one Steve Perry and there always will be.

  • wow...looks like they have a new singer if Arnel goes ;)

  • Did they do a tour with Deen singing or what cuz Ive never seen him sing live . they always had a singer....anyone inform me ?

  • @sentinal1 He sang most of the songs towards the end of Journey's tour with STEVE AUGERI 2006-07 tour. Augeri was losing his voice, so Deen stepped in. however, Deen STILL sings about 2 or 3 song EVERY show. He does the HIGH ones that Arnel can't hit the notes on. Arnel SUCKS and Deen should be their lead man in my opinion.

  • damn he's nice!

  • damn thats hard singing while drumming ! he's great as well

  • If Journey insists on having a front man they need to bring Dean out from behind the drum set to sing...i mean his voice is the best Journey as ever seen. They can always get a drummer!!!!!

  • wow, he sings it in more of steve perry's fashion than arnel does. very nice

  • Stunning!

  • the high note at end is a falsetto and Deen didn't sing a falsetto voice that's why he didn't include in this rendition and besides, it's SP style of singing.

  • i admire deen, AMAZING !!!!!!!!

  • Kudos to Deen he does a great job, but I noticed no one hit the high note at end....no one can hit it like Steve!!

  • Quiet Frankly...I am in awe! It is amazing to hear drummers play and sing so well. Props to Deen! (Gotta love those drummers)

  • Can I just say that there are a lot of pro drummers who couldn't play this the way Deen does. It's far more complex than the original Steve Smith version. Now think about doing that AND singing one of Journey's most challenging songs. It is simply unbelievable! Only Steve Perry can sing exactly like Steve Perry so it's pointless compare. Just enjoy this superhuman performance and wonder how one man can be blessed with that much talent!

  • He is great - don't know why he didn't take the job since he was there B 4 Arnell!!!!

  • Okay. Most of you are horribly uneducated in regards to singing. Steve Perry has a great voice. We get it. Deen Castronovo sings this song flawlessly with incredible power and a full, beautiful tone...while drumming simultaneously. Few of you must understand how difficult that is. I don't understand how anyone can say he doesn't do this song justice, especially after hearing 2:54 - 3:06. Think before you comment...and most of all, learn to appreciate another person's remarkable talents.

  • @RyQuin7850 totally agree. I'm a big Steve fan, but it's impossible to deny that Castronovo does an amazing job here.

I'm a trained singer myself and I know how hard can be to perform this song alive (even for an extraordinary singer as Steve Perry). Then, to sing this piece while playing drums, is just unbelievable. I know some few drummers that sing while playing (like Queen's Roger Taylor), but never heard anything like this guy before.

  • @oaiturriaga Sorry- didn't mean to vote your comment down I meant to say up!! I can't believe he can sing while putting his energy into a drum fueled song!! Amazing!!

  • A voz desse baterista é muito melhor do que esse vocalista, Arnel Pineda...

    Bem melhor...

Mas nada que se compare a Steve Perry...

  • nice song...XD

  • Check out the ending at 5:12 - 5:31 on the original. It's Steve Perry on both videos at the end.

  • @merrypeary If you think that you're nuts!!

  • @klitstrom Well Deen didn't sing the ending in his version and Steve did! Which leads me to believe that Deen CAN'T hit them highs! Deens does alright covering this song...being in a tribute band and all....he's certainly better than Arnel. Not nearly as good as Steve Perry though.

  • Not everyone can hit them high notes huh Deen?

  • @merrypeary

Is Steve Perry the only singer you appreciate/will ever be able to appreciate? Who cares if he didn't do the falsetto at the end, he took the place of Steve Perry and Steve Smith. I don't know if you know anything about drumming, but Steve Smith is one of the best drummers of all time, and Deen plays remarkably while also flawlessly singing a vocal part that was challenging for Steve Perry. I consider myself a harsh critic of musicians, but come on.

  • @RyQuin7850 Well...if he was so remarkable and flawles as you say...then why didn't he do the ending himself??? As far as him replacing Steve Perry & Steve Smith...NO one will ever be able to replace THE VOICE or Smitty...no matter how hard they try!!!

  • @RyQuin7850 Yes we all love Steve but he doesn't want to sing anymore and we have to accept that!! Journey music must go on!

  • Ha Ha...Yeahhh...I have heard the Original many times and they used Steve's voice for the ending. :))))

  • Hey....that sounded like THE VOICE piped in from 5:00 - 5:18. Why didn't you sing this part too Deen?

  • Oh thats deffinitly steves voice in the end....Wtf? I guess they had to have steve for the song, thiers no comparison..Steve owns that song...no one can duplicate him.

  • Deen is definitely not singing at the end. Watching the close-ups makes that obvious. It is either instrumentation, or Perry's vocals.

  • @punkchickkool You mean the falsetto? Yeah, it's the isolated audio from the studio vocals - Perry himself hated this song because that outro is the most difficult thing he's ever sang supposedly. It could be a string synth but unless Jon has an invisible hand... though it could be sampled and played on a certain note, I guess.

  • @AtOdinsCall I have read Perry's statements about the song, saying it was the hardest song in their catalog to sing. Can't imagine he 'hated' the song, since he was one of the writers. He loved his songs. Jonathen Cain stated when they were writing songs, Perry oftentimes had him kick the songs up a few notches. Perry stated when singing, he would use as little effort as possible so as not to strain his voice. If the sounds came, great. He said fortunately, most of the time the sound did come!

  • Journey Escape, best album of the 80s, no doubt, here is proof.

  • That's definitely without a doubt, Steve Perry's vocals at the end. None of the other singers after him can sing it and thus they are using a Perry sound clip. With today's technology it's very possible. But seriously. Listen closely to the ending then go youtube the Escape album--or better yet buy it. Listen to the ending. I'm 100% positive those are Perry's vocals.

  • Extremely impressed. Not Steve, but sounds damned close. They need to send Arnel packin.

  • deen is amazing

should let him sing over pineda

  • Come on guys.I one of the biggest Steve Perry today, but they have to move on.it doesn't look like Steve is comeing any time soon.so why don't give new lead singer a shot ok.and wow what nice job dean.it a hard eunff just to sibg. Long live journy

  • Wondering who sang the last part of the song? To me it sounded like Steve. I thought they dropped that part of th song because of hitting the high notes.

  • @redkris60 I totally just caught that. I thought they were using a keyboard or something but i put my headphones on and turned the volume all the way up--sounds just like Perry. Doubt any of those guys sang it so must have been ripped from Perry's original vocals.

  • arnel pineda un cazzo this is deen castronovo

  • hahahahahah, he can imitate perry's singing even better than arnel pineda!!!!!!

  • Good at least Arnel can take a break and someone else can sing. Deen should sing more lead vocals on songs.

  • Who is the drummer??

  • It's like tribute to Steve Perry and Steve Smith!, well done!

  • Actually, I'm impressed for the drummer to pull this off! Good job guys! I just still... Steve Perry! Arnel is takin a break!?

  • @gupper83 No Arnel just can't sing this song, It's WAY too high for him,, Arnel sucks anyway, but Deen ROCKS

  • journey is better with steve perry.

  • Journey - Mother, father (Deen Castronovo Live Vegas 2008)

  • This is my favorite in journey!

    I love it!

    Thanks for posting!

  • wow! nice voice!

  • 15 idiots morons dislike this vids.

  • i think this vid should be renamed.

  • damn he sound like him too

  • But still noone sing this song better than STEVE PERRY ♥

  • @klemcek normally, I wouldn't agree with that sort of thing...I tend to believe that Journey is more than Steve Perry...but this song was Perry's masterpiece.

  • Fucking mindblowingly Awesome!!! You did Journey, Steve Perry And Steve Smith Very Proud. Thank You.

  • im amazed wow,, 2 tumbs up

  • Rock on Arnel & Dean you do Steve Perry and Steve Smith justice ! I sing this song at local bars and it is definetly a song that test your vocal abilities . So much respect to anyone who dares to sing this 1 Steve Perry style !!! Rock on Steve Perry Rock on Deen & Arnel & Augeri rock on Neal ROCK ON JOURNEY !!!!!

  • arnels great! they were very fortunate to find him. allows them to keep doing what they love and bringing it to theyre fans. meanwhiles hes thousands of miles away from home and family touring. show the man a lil respect.

  • おいおい、なんだこの美声は……

    正直、ラテン系マッスル親父としか思ってなかったよ。

  • Yes Steve Perry is a great singer . but he is no longer with the band. They have a new singer that is doing just fine. I wish people would give him a chance . Neal has and he is a founding member of band.

  • @snowbuthead I agree ! I am a diehard Steve Perry Fan but i give these guys credit arnel and dean have to fill big shoes ! So much respect to the new Journey ! People should just enjoy the music and hard work all journey members past and present have blessed us with Rock on Arnel & Snowbuthead & Rock on Journey Past and present!

  • Yes Steve Perry is a great singer . but he is no longer with the band. They have a new singer that is doing just fine.

  • Pineda cant sing this song why is the vid listed as Arnel singing Mother Father

stop lying that clown cant sing this song lol

  • Damn, Deen sings better than Pineda.

  • Steve Perry = Journey forever. <3

(I do give Dean props though for being able to sign decently well whilst playing the drums rather excellently.)

  • I love how Steve "The Voice" was the ONLY one who could pull off the falsetto and that none of the others even bother to attempt it. It seemed that when the part that only Perry could have possibly sung came up, the old members of the band didn't seem to have the spirit they used to, and Dean just stops singing, obviously wishing that was capable of a fraction of the magic that Perry produced with his voice. With him, that part was enough to make you cry - it was outright beautiful.

  • @MCRdemolitionVampire Amen ! MCR Vamp Glads someone else feels the same way ! The other guys are ok no disrespect ! But Steve Perry brought excitement and when he sang left me speechless and in a trance ! Such Emotion and feeling in his performance ! Such passion ! And love your comment Rock on !!!

  • Dean is my choice after Steve. Should have been from there outset. However, apparently he had no desire to take on the job full time, so another singer had to come in.

  • Deen is amazing....voice, phrasing, coordination, chops, sound. Phuck American Idol and Phuck Gaga! I'm not afraid to say it.

  • if i didnt know better i would swear they dubb steve perry voice on this singer

  • Impressive!!!

  • You should change the title of your video. It isn't even Arnel Pineda singing this song because HE doesn't have the range in his voice to sing it.The drummer Deen Castronovo has to. Why they didn't just get Deen to sing all the old Journey songs is beyond me.Oh yeah Deen has his own singing voice and he doesn't try to copy a certain other ex lead singer of this band that he respects a lot I have read.Steve Perry sings this song and all the old Journey songs better than anyone else in my opinion.

  • How can you match that, indeed. Dean, you are incredible.

  • The first guy I ever kissed looks like Deen's twin. I wonder if Deen tastes just as yummY??

  • arnel cant sing this song?why?

  • somethings steve and arnel just cant sing like deen.

  • any drummer should not be a great singer like Deen.Just great!!!!

  • His voice sounds a lot like steve!Wonderful!!!!

  • What a great version!

  • what hell if you did not wont steve so you get an asshole to do biding. the fool in the group had to kick out steve and got a pussy to sing and sound like steve. that's my through on it. i despise Arnel Pineda.

  • Who is this guy?? He's good!!

  • faggot new journey has to use Steves high note at the end of the song to finish it off. how pathetic. Journey still needs Steve

  • @xXAceMan32Xx Actually on this live performance that's a clearly a synth (keyboard) not a real human voice at the end playing the notes Perry use to sing in falsetto. But yes, in his prime Perry could hit those notes live. It would be nice if Perry would come back except for the fact he can't sing anymore and is about 50 lbs overweight. Kinda presents a problem for singing live. There's a reason no one has seen Perry sing live in almost 15 years - he can't anymore. Happens to the best of us.

  • Does anyone else get all hot n' bothered when Deen sings this song???!!!

  • Ok, Deen can sing..... But it only works for this song because he naturally has a high pitch tone to his voice. He is NOT good enough to be the frontman,. He has no range. HE IS NOT AS GOOD AS ARNEL

  • @matt2eadgbe He has no range ? Really - Cause the audio for this song of him singing would seem to indicate pretty clearly he's got pretty damn good range.

  • @matt2eadgbe the simple fact that Deen can nail this song alone proves you absolutly wrong. This song requires incredible range. Some of those interval jumps during the verses alone demonstrate that Deen has great range in his scale and he also has great dynamic range as well. When you consider that he is moving all four limbs while singing which makes breath control all the more difficult, anyone who has had vocal training can tell that Deen has both range and power which this song requires!

  • @neechee5150 No doubt the guy can sing. And maybe saying he has NO range was going too far. Lets just say he has limited range.... Arnel still sings their biggest hits (the actual trademarks). This song just suites Deen better because of his natural high tone. The guy from the Beegee's could probaby sing this song. That doesn't mean he can cover every Journey song. If Deen was the better choice as frontman, then he would be the frontman.

  • @matt2eadgbe Deen raises the bar for Arnel every time Deen takes over lead vocals. Escape was Journey's biggest and argueably best record of their entire career, and they are not going to let the second string singer take lead vocals on so many trademark Journey songs.

Deen has a respectable range- both dynamic and of scale by any one's standards who has even a modicum of vocal training and appreciation for Steve Perry's incredible vocal tracks.

  • This is not arnel wft??

    Arnel cant sing this LoL

  • Why can't Arnel sing this song lol?

  • @eljay345 cuz arnel sucks

  • My all-time favorite classic rock band!!! Arnel rox!! ;-P

  • To the haters, get real. This guy is a great singer.

  • I'm sorry anyone who thinks Dean is in the same category as Steve Perry really is living in la la land. Sure he does an amazing job however he clearly can't hit the seriously high falseto notes at the end. Further to this his voice quality and purity is fine, but really doesn't compare.

  • The best part of this performance was the end when I heard steve perry's voice.

  • MIGOSH DEAN/DEEN'S VOICE IS SO AMAZING I LOVE AP, BUT WHY DIDN'T HE JUST TAKE THE FRONT MAN PART. WOOOOW. DRUMS AND SINGING WITH HIGH NOTES WITHOUT A GASP!!!WOOw. love him!!!!!!!!1mwah! bakit pa sila nag hanap e yan naman pala o.ps. love ap!!

  • Haha, he actually sounds better for Journey then Arnel.

  • Looks like they have another singer if Arnel Pineda goes.

  • @elh126 who knew Deen could sing???

  • @sentinal1 ..lol..who knew. Kinda like it. And with playing drums at same time??? please..Dudes got skills.

  • deen truly is a beast...

  • does deen sing the high notes at the end or is it just a recording of steve?

  • Deen is not shy about hitting those drum heads HARD..I cannot beleive he sings this song as perfectly as he does WHILE PLAYINIG> his cardio must be amazing! I want to have his love babies...LOL

  • Doesn't get much more talented than Deen Castronovo

  • My oldest son really loves this song...and it is my favorite Journey song!!!! and dean is a monster!!!! singing and drumming!!!!

  • Wow, he sang that easily as good as Perry ever did.. while playing drums!!! WTF?

  • Am I the only one who thinks this is ACTUALLY Steve Perry's version? If you listen to Steve and then listen to this, you will hear the what I am talking about

  • HOLD ON A MIN Neeeches5150.. If u had a tenth of heart Arnel Penada has , you wouldnt be saying that about any one. Dont get me wrong Dean IS a awesome singer ok, But why did they go through 2 perfectly good an well respected, talented singers before they stopped with Arnel huh? and too top it off RECORD a NEW Album with Arnel Penada if they didnt think he has wat it takes HUH? answer me that ......idiot

  • @djemz1 Why is they are ALWAYS looking for someone who sounds like Seve Perry? It is not just the voice that makes the singer, it is the energy and NOONE has the energy Steve had. Besides If Dean was so good at singing, why didn't they just get a different drummer and move him to lead singer?

  • @cdaniels7689

Deen himself said he doesn't like the spot light in an interview regarding being a lead singer...Every one ALWAYS wishes SP was there, but to say NO ONE has the energy of SP...your wrong my friend, have you seen Arnel perform with the band?? I have seen 3 of Journey's lead singers perform with the band including SP, and I have yet to see the band as energized with the type of performance Arnel puts on..

  • @cdaniels7689 yeah..i wonder y? hmmhe's great.

  • Deen does a nice job. I really am surprised that they didn't just make him the front man a la Phil Collins, who stepped out from behind the drums in Genesis. Funny that a guy with all those tattoos should consider himself reserved!

  • The title of this video is obviously wrong as Deen is singing this song and he is doing a fantastic job of it all the while playing the drums. This song is very demanding due to the range involved and the sustained notes, and Deen is having fun and putting alot of soul and power into this song. Deen you are amazing.

  • lol poor arnel he cant sing this song they need the drummer lol giving arnel a rest come on if the guy had the range they would let his ass sing it he cant what a joke

  • god im old i miss the 80 s lol

  • If that is the drummer singing he is doing a great job singing and playing is tough......... One of my favorite songs

  • Great voice but still a copy of STEVE PERRY the only singer for JOURNEY. If I were him and I can sing like Steve, I would go on stage and dedicate every song to the one that sang it first......... STEVE PERRY... I can't beleive these guys go on and on trying to copy the singer that made them what they are..... Unbelievable

  • Love to hear arnel do this song ,be amazing.

  • @seekhim777 If Arnel could pull off a better performance of this song, Schon and Cain would let him do it. Arnels enunciation, diction, vowel production, pronuciation, dynamic range, scale and overall timbre just do not fit this song as well as Deen's. If Deen was not shy and reserved and if he had more of a front man personality, Arnel would not have a job plain and simple. Deen would have got the gig hands down.

  • POWERFULL!!

  • It's nice that anyone in the band can sing great,too..This is to give arnel a break for singing loooong hoursssssssssss... they showed arnel concern and care in someway...

  • @jennicholaii Yeah, like they never showed Perry. His sets were a third or more longer than now, without click-tracks to mask a 'bad night', he toured under far more primitive conditions, had to do an album & then 100's of dates year after year-yet was just considered disposable when he couldn't suit their financial need to tour after Trial by Fire. They condemned him for traveling in a camper to try to salvage his relationship, yet offered Arnel one because he was homesick. Hypocrites!

  • I must admit Deen sings this amazing ! He sounds closer to Perry than Arnel .

  • For those who say that Dean and Perry sound the same in this song they are way off not even the same

  • @XxD3us 100% agree with you

  • Dean is an amazing singer hes phenomonal and an amazing drummer

  • OK, that was amazing. Fire Arnel and put that guy out front.

  • OK, that was amazing. Fire Arnel and put that guy out front.

  • @Cockholio it's not easy two play the drum at the same time singing i already experienced that and who the hell are you saying that they will fire arnel.you don't know about music .playing the drum and singing is not easy,if you play the guitar it's much easier.

  • awesome!

  • 1fitmama - at this stage, Steve Perry couldn't sing that note either today

  • @BanjoMan8 And how would you know that Banjoman? Have you heard him recently??? Did anyone believe he could even hit that note way back then?!!!

    PERRY POWER!!! xXx

  • Comment removed

  • Im not dissing these guys at all, but Steve P was a phenomenon, not to be outdone!

  • that solo.......

    NEAL SCHON, da man!!!!!!

  • Watch the original... He plays it a hell of alot better. I know age plays a factor and he's still amazing... but way better when he was touring for the escape album.

  • deen is twice as good as arnel.....sorry but that's my opinion and this shows in this concert

  • @killerdelfin I totally agree and neither are even half as good as STEVE PERRY!!!

  • @killerdelfin although I will give Dean kudos for attempting and somewhat conquering the song while playing drums, that's talent and stamina, but he still couldn't pull off the high note at the end. Sorry, good...but no cigar.

  • Wow, they don't need Arnel. Dean is fantastic!!!!

  • @tuberjunkie i know fucker...........drums and vocals? sick

  • Journey explained it. It is because the fans want some front man, dean is good but he is behind his drums, the energy when they are performing will not reach its peak.

  • Steve Perry is the greatest vocalist , but i dont understand why they brought Arnel in when this guy Dean is so good. Can someone explain? How cool to be able to sing this good and play drums at the same time.

  • Yes I agree like look at phil collins he's a singer and plays the drums the drums at the same time. This guy Deen is very cool and awesome and has a vocal so powerful!

  • hello there , thanks for your reply, i really like this guy Deen, he seems very modest, but hes incredibly talented, i have a lot of respect for him. although i miss steve so much . good to speak to you. Lynda

  • Hiya Its nice to meet you too^_^Steve Perry was so awesome.I admire him and his style in singing.I started singing because of him.The band journey is my biggest influence in music. And the guitarist neal is so awesome to^_^

  • beautiful!!!

  • wow! Dean is amazing!!!!! singing Faithfully too!

  • OMG what a musician DC is and of course the rest.

  • does it matter if it's a sound track. i'm not sure i get what point you are getting so worked up over making. deen is singing live and doing an ok job, we don't like arnel and we like perry best. i hate how everyone has a slagging match. voice your opinion and stand by it but don't let yourself be worked up.

  • i love Deen's version of this. i wouldn't listen' to a version with arnel, just because i know his voice wouldnt suit it. end of. perry and Deen both do brilliant versions of this, end of.

  • Well, I suppose if you don't like it, don't listen is the bottom line. Endless rants are pointless

  • STEVE PERRY WAS, IS & ALWAYS WILL B BETTER THAN ANY WANNABE THAT IS / WAS IN THIS SO-CALLED BAND GOURNEY! I call them Gourney with a "G" G 4 GENERIC cover band. They keep trying but will NEVER B WHAT STEVE PERRY MADE THEM. HE is D ULTIMATE SINGER OF ALL TIME. Bet they're kicking themselves now. So what, they made 35 mil + last tour...w/ Steve @least double that guaranteed! Suckers- guess your bills couldn't wait, huh? 2bad. Just wait til he comes back. Who will have D last laugh? STEVE-MF-PERRY!

  • Steve Perry also didn't drum an sing dummy

  • true that

  • You two are "making" it together?

......some kind of fatal attraction here.

......naah, you must be the one....go girl!!

    hehe.
