@lambovsatan225 Was mainly refering to his older films, and even then, more in concept than anything. So for example, NOES has crazy scenes like blood pouring from the bed and into the cieling or Freddy's arms extending freakishly. Do they have anything to do with the story? No, in fact, in a film like that they are far more important than the story. That is what I mean by 'visual director'. But yes, these days he just milks his past successes.
However, Wes Craven's film career is mostly based on horror flicks(B-movies) and Horror is mostly about visuals and the depiction of the sadism of the antagonist in these movies. I think that's why Freddy Krueger as a character who kills his victims in the most "visualistic" kind only pairs perfectly with Robert Englun's acting, but I just don't think it' fair to put him in the same category as George Lucas who RUINS his films with visuals.
@lambovsatan225 But remember that the original trilogy was visual oriented too. The costume designs, the light sabers, the space ships, are all part of the visual experience. 'Visual' oriented films rely on plenty of things: Props, set designs, costume designs, lighting, imagery, how it's filmed and yes, CGI (depending how it's used). "Star Wars" is nothing special in terms of story, but it's visual ideas made it into a classic. Even Sergio Leone is a visual director. (cont)
@Lambovastan225 (continued) Horror directors seemed to have lost their touch. NOES, Hellraiser, Phantasm, Halloween and maybe Friday the 13th were all visual oriented films. These days, you don't see it as often. Because horror often is just about suspense, intensity, what we see and what we don't see. The 'visual' aspect is optional, so horror films just focus on those. For example, while it has some striking visuals, I wouldn't call "Saw" a visual film.
Star Wars is nothing special in terms oh history?. I agree it doesn't create as much lore as other Sci-fi like Star Trek or SG-1, but creating a universe , giving it life, cultures, a well established balance between good and evil(with a few gray areas) is a lot of story once analyce it.
I agree on Sergio Leone, but because it's only needing to depend on visuals, character gestures and the settings(some of his films are of epic proportions).
@MartialHorror (continued) Horror is not what it used to be in the 70s or the 80s, but then again, Horror in the 70s and the 80s wasn't what it was in the 40s the 50s or 60s. Remember The Blob? It was just A massive blob consuming people whereas in the 88s remake you could ACTUALLY see people deforming and disintegrating.
I disagree with you about Saw. the first was psychological, but the visuals are there to scare you or just traumatize you. The sequels were a "mild" gore fest.
@lambovsatan225 I don't think that's really story. It's spectacle. Otherwise, Avatar would have a good story, but it doesn't. While cultures, universe, etc dont really count as visuals, I do believe the props/set designs, etc do count. I agree with your horror statement. While Saw had some freaky visuals, it wasnt all about them. NOES, Phantasm, etc were all about startling images.
Is it weird that I watched it precisely because everyone said it sucks? I wanted to see what all the hate was about. By the way, I didn't think it was *that* bad. But, interestingly enough, although I normally enjoy over-the-top fantasy action, Sucker Punch wasn't very good in this regard :(
I just finished watching this worthless piece of crap.I want the last two hours of my life! I would give more details as to why I hated this movie but that would require investing more of my life into this movie than it deserves.
Great visuals but the plot and music and actors sucked. And although the visuals were great I agree they have nothing to do with the movie. Any one who like this movie is one of these to things: a pervert or a dumb chick
@KingCommando32 Matrix all the way. I loved inception and they both make you think, but The Matrix is about everything. Everyone living in a dream(The matrix) and waking up from this dream and earn your independance from this Matrix. Huh.. Matrinception?. A MATRIX WITHIN A MATRIX!. ... Lol.. sorry.
Well said man.. I just watched it, and it sucks.. they think they can get away with hot checks and visuals. No concept whatsoever of something called STORY.
Looks like Lemony Snikets fucked American McGee's Alice... No wait, didn't they just rip off those two storylines and grind them together, and snort the powder? AND THEY EVEN PLAYED WHITE RABBIT IN THE MOVIE!!?! My god! But to disguise that it's just another generic Alice in wonderland spin off, they throw in vague shit about samurai and robots. I predicted the end of the movie from the first trailer when it was first circulating. Movie was for idiots. Sorry idiots.
i wrote to much so wasnt able to post the whole thing, because i wrote 800 words. to make a short point, sweet pea is telling the story, and the whole brothal fantasy is sweet peas, not baby doll, beacuse baby doll doenst learn to cop with her problems untill the thrapist tells her to dance, but sweet pea sees it as the thrapist telling baby doll to dance, but what she really is doing is finding a way to get confidence and become a stronger woman
@ttlyluvsasuke247, no it really isn't. It sucks so hard. It's really, really bad. The story is idiotic and the special effects do nothing to save what is just a shit film from beginning to end.
@MartialHorror action and story work well he did it well in watchmen because that movie is the only way some people would have "watched" the watchmen he he he he.
@thearthurshow With watchmen though, the action more or less fits the narrative. With Sucker Punch, it's the selling point, but I dont believe the plot worked with it.
If he wanted to make a psychological thriller/escape movie, he should've focused more on just tension, not spectacle.
@MartialHorror well think of it this way i am pretty sure your not a teenage (the people this movie wanted to be seen by) but for teenagers how do they get away from the real world well now i days its a lot like this movie. at lest that's what i think.
I like zack snyders previous work like 300, dawn of the dead, and watchmen but when I saw the new trailer to sucker punch, it just looked stupid to me, it looked like more style over substance, visuals amazing, movie looks like crap, thats why I avoided it...so far, i'd say just go with it is the worst film of this year so far, worst comedy ever made
zack synder is one trick pony. 300 sucked dick, watchmen was boring and also sucked dick and fuckerlunch obviously sucks and so will superman. His career is almost over just like Joel Schumacher's.
You know, it may suck but I applaud ir sucking. It sucked trying something ambiguous instead of rehashing a dying formula (cough cough, alien invasion Battle of LA, skyline). So to me, Sucker punch isn't as bad as those movies.
@shadowcrone I personally found Skyline to be 'meh'/harmless/was fine when it was being a special effects bonanza but sucked when it wanted to be dramatic/subpar.
It didn't annoy me as much as SP, but expectations might be involved.
I personally don't like Zack Scyther as a director and I'm not even thinking about watching this garbage, but I'm glad it was hated by critics and pretty much by everyone else. Let's say it was God's revenge for making a terrible remake of Dawn of the Dead.
@AndersAndErSjov Yeah. Checking his filmography now, I didn't realize he didn't write all of his movies, but his writing credits are solid(although The Imaginarium of Dr. P wasn't great, imo).
like your, review, but I´m not agreed, yes it felt a little forced, but I think is a pretty unique movie, and more intelligent than most people see it.
Sucker punch does suck

You classify Wes Craven as a " Visual director "?
I get that he's one for remake and milking his own creations, but wow!.
What the fuck are you on?.
Directors like Michael Bay(although he's more about explosions), or James Cameron fit more into the whole "visuals" category, bnut Wes Craven?. No.

2:00 - this Movie is Wishful thinking;
This is where video games for consoles like the PS3 Have been going;
Good graphics; Crappy Storylines!*
-The birth of Shovel-ware Games to appear to the Violent hicks to send to iraq so we get more pointless wars.
So the Reptilian elite can run this country into the ground below;
Hell.*
This movie was a Sucker-punch to audiences hoping for a much better movie.
This movie is skin deep, only for looks.
That is what the sick Reptilian elite wormwood Likes.
