In my opinion, Carreras creates here an embodiment of Mario Cavadarossi that may never be equaled, let alone surpassed.
Personal preferences may differ, but I think Mr. Carreras has a special insight into this role that gives him something extra. Yes, his voice is one of those stellar voices, but this is more than beauty of voice or of person and even more than Carreras' skill as an actor.
Carreras manages to become Mario Cavadarossi as Puccini wrote him.
Bravissimo Carreras! Here, he combines voice, acting, presence and skill in all three in a way that create and embodiment of Mario Cavadarossi that may never be equaled. One may prefers Carreras' own production with Etchverry or in Japan, but he fits the role on a personal level in some way. Yes, his voice is one of those stellar voices, granted, he puts the role before beauty of sound. Granted he is beautiful to look at, but this is more. He becomes Mario as Puccini wrote him. Bravissimo!
Because of this very shooting I have always prefered Carreras to his famous contemporary Pavarotti and Domingo.Sush passion and zest for life really cut to the heart!
WHAT A REVELATION! Carreras is superb in voice and as a thespian. Tis a pity that many younger generations were introduced via the Three Tenors concert, where his voice is a fraction of what it once was, and did not hint at the brilliant singer in this video...
@operafan85 I certainly think the young Carreras had the most beautiful tenor voice of the century. I wish he had kept to roles that were suitable for his voice, and had not sung his voice out so early on.
I already have this version in my favorites, but I can never get enough of Carreras in this role! What a gorgeous voice! No one can touch his version of this aria, in my opinion.
is this live? this sounds almost identically as good as the colin davis set that i have
