  • The only time in U.S. History that an *entire* student body fought together in combat. The Citadel's cadets all fought, except for one that was studying in Germany, and 2 or 3 others that didn't basically because they couldn't or weren't there.

  • I second all the comments here, the south was NOT fighting for slavery or against it and neither was the north and anyone who says otherwise is just plain ignorant...btw that pipe band is pretty awesome :-)

  • The young men from VMI that died at the battle of new market were and are still heroes to the people of the entire south. They were willing to give their lives for what they felt was the county, nothing more or less than any soldier today. VMI cadets did General Jackson and Armistead proud. As I have said on other sites, Virginia you have a lot to be proud of and I would burst from pride that my state produced such great men and soldiers. This Tennessean is envious.

  • deo vindice

  • one of the neater things I have seen in my time of reenacting(still in the 36th Va infantry now) was an event at New Market, and we got to stand at the end while they had someone from VMI come up and march across in front of our colors, give name and rank, and then add "died on the field of honor sir" it was one of the most moving things ive seen

  • That is a very ignorant comment first off. You say that now but if you were brought up down south before the civil war you most likely would have faught along side those "trators". What they did was honor the memory of those brave boys who fought and died for what they believed in, what they were loyal to. Yes boys, as young as 15 years old, some not old enough to by cigs now a days. You probably wont even hit a guy if he poored your soy latte all over the front of your blouse and skirt.

  • watch my video of vmi cadet parade or just look up brosdose2134

  • All three segments of the video are equally impressive.

  • Tootoo, obviously you are not very well rehearsed in history. In formal parades (such as the one shown above) VMI is the only military institution including the federal service academies allowed to fix bayonets.

I also find it interesting that you call New Market traitorous. First, I cannot name one person from the Civil War era charged of treason. Second, if the Confederacy was so "traitorous" why does West Point make note of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on its admissions page?

  • anyone know how to get a bagpipe vesion of shnandoah on you ipod?

    plus GO V.M.I !!!!!!

  • There is nothing traitorous about fighting for your way of life and against the agression of others.

  • @blufb08

Against the agression (sic) of a bunch of Citadel cadidiots who couldn't manage to hit a target that wasn't shooting back?

  • that's why we are the VIRGINIA military institute. you moron. we know we faught for the confederacy, that was OUR country then, we were being faithful to our native state. Look up commitment when you get a chance. peace fucker.

  • They were fighting for what they believed in you dick. Dont't critize VMI for doing what they thought was right, chasing intruders from their homes.

  • The cadets who fought alongside elements of the CS Army at New Market were only engaging in 'traitorous' acts if one has a very pro-Union attitude.

I seriously doubt they make up that stuff about VMI being the only military college or service academy allowed to fix bayonets, sir.

And yes, there are five service academies.

    Sic Semper Tyrannis, b****.

  • You want to come down to VMI and say that crap to our faces? I got a whole corps of cadets who'd love to tell you how they feel on the matter, who you got?

  • i got a letter from you guys today

  • Very precise. When did they change the march from Dixie to Shenandoah?

  • To Mike Phoenix: I'm guessing they play "Shenandoah" on "New Market Day" because the battle of New Market was fought in the Shenandoah Valley. But, then again, I'm just a Yankee so what do I know? ...but I am a Yankee who admires the South's military tradition and VMI. (Awesome pipes!) And Tootoo: You could stand to learn something about pride and discipline from 'Ole Johnnie Reb... I can think of lots who I'd rather pick a fight with.

  • I didn't say why, I said when (I have a good idea of the why). They changed it in the last 2 or 3 decades and I'm just curious what year they made the change.

  • It changed after every African-American in the Corps of Cadets boycotted the New Market Day ceremony in May 1975 to protest the playing of Dixie, which, by the way, the event during the VMI year that it was ever performed. The legislature resolved and the Governor endorsed its proscription thereafter.
