Smaller and rounder poles seem to work best for me. And try starting off kicking your legs higher in the air, then gradually lower them down horizontally. Good try though, keep it up man
Agreed, have been trying it recently with a wider grip and am able to stop the rotation and hold it for longer. I will devise some bars to give the ladder a try in my garage when I clear the crap out of it.

I found wider grip better in this move, and it's also easier on ladder, as deffcon9 said.

Try using an actual round pole. The square one is probably forcing you to slip off since it has defined edges (the corners..)
