@gotya102 Hi, I haven't pulled the cars loaded down with real loads. The force required to pull the cars empty is quite a bit all by itself, especially up the big hill I have. I have done drawbar pull tests on the 18lb MTH Big Boys and they avg about 7.5lbs (with peaks at 8lb) That is about the same as the 45lb USA Trains Big Boy. (difference is traction tires)
nice set up but it looks weird seeing dash 8's running with up big boys you should run those sd40's with the dash 8's it will look more closer to time frame
@PeteM234 Hi Pete. I really like long uniform coal trains and coupled with the fact these cars were very cost effective compared to most G scale out there I went with these. Maybe someday will see a long intermodal train but for now... ; )
4004 was the only road number MTH released with this initial first set of runs of the Big Boy. They had multiple production runs and are now all sold out. I would bet future releases would have a diff road number just not sure when that would be.
I didn't know MTH made Big Boys in 1 gauge. The trains look really majestic. I can only imagine how much the rolling stock alone cost with all those railcars and in 1 gauge scale!
Thanks for your comment. I think they do look really great. LOL Believe it or not each coal car was about 25 dollars each so it did add up but considering the size and how much rolling stock costs in other scales, it's really not too bad. Did take time to save up for that is for sure. ; )
You're right, $25 per car is actually a good price and that it's cheaper than good-quality O-scale rolling stock; MTH and Lionel often costs $35-45 per car new and Atlas can run a good deal more than that.
After conversion to the MTH DCS protosound system the Dash-9s go about a maximum speed of say 65 Scale miles per hour. The MTH Big Boys... I'm not sure their max speed, probably over 75 SMPH which is very fast given the size of the engines drivers. They all go faster than you will normally want to run them.
FRIGGIN HUGE. And mth makes the body's out of metal. 0.0, and I couldn't help but notice that the pusher engine had the same number as the second engine out front. But I couldn't care less! 8D
Some people run battery in this scale but with the advent of Stainless steel rail, there's no need. Battery power also gets expensive really quick as a single dash-9(in video) can only run 1 hour on a 77 dollar Aristocraft battery pack. So if you ran five engines 10 hours like I do, that's 50 batteries costing 3850 dollar not including chargers. I only run stuff under track power and never have issues because of poor electrical conductivity. Much cheaper and less hassle.
If you banked the curves slightly and kept the camera angle lower so you couldn't see the fence or house you'd swear it was the real thing!

have you ever tested to see how much a single big boy will pull with those coal cars loaded with rocks???

@fordlukebo Hi, no it's not. Those are removable fake coal load covers in the cars.

Love the NS coal train. I have a few questions if i could get a good email or even a phone number to ask you directly?

How come coal cars only? Seems like there ought to be a freight car here and there.

humanekiller 1 year ago
any reason for the third bigboy pushing it?? or is it there for show?

One of those big boys could pull that train. The other engines are there because I want them there.

@rayman4449 what do these trains run on as far as there fuel or energy to make them move.
humanekiller 1 year ago
@humanekiller hi, they can run on track power 0-24v, but I run at constant 24v and control with wireless remote.

Can you order the engines with different numbers? Or is 4004 the only engine number they make?

And I guess I should have clarified too that the steam engines were probably going 15 SMPH and the diesels in the 20's.
