Empress Gladys was spot on and the best performer on this show, so you say it's just ol' school. Empress Gladys' voice is UNDIMINISHED, and the jealousy eats at you. Obviously, Gladys is the standard by which you now judge. And you can only give your SUBJECTIVE opinion about what is more or less soulful and attack Gladys. What is a fact is that GLADYS has simply maintained and preserved her voice over the years. and Aretha hasn't. You can't accept that.
gladys's voice has gotten deeper, as has Aretha's. It's what happens to singers at the age. It's a natural process. Aretha Franklin is in good voice she can still hang. Her concert at Radio City Music Hall this year is a testament to that and Gladys Knight's UK tour right is a testament she can still do amazing.
I don't think high notes measure a singer. It is the soul and their ability to reflect that through song. Sure, there are people out there who feel their music and there are people out there that can hit high notes, but unless your able to convey a feeling that makes the audience feel more than a "high note" or "vocal acrobatic" you're wasting your time singing. This is why singers like Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin have had such longevity with their career and memorable songs.

I will say when Aretha goes on stage she has made sure her presence is known and not forgotten. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to be backup, and I've seen performances where all three of these singes have tried to upstage other singers they perform with. It'll show off vocal theatrics, but I enjoy the solo work from both Gladys and Aretha more than stuff they've done with other female singers. They've both got some great dues with male and females though in spite of this.
I wouldn't say Aretha won't share the stage with other singers. She has performed with many singers ranging from Gladys Knight, Natalie cole, Whitney Houston, Cissy Houston, tramain Hawkins, Chaka Khan, and Patti Labelle. I don't think she's scared. A Lot of people view her interpretations of singing a lyric shortly after the other person as her trying to upstage them, but it's technique that Ray Charles also uses and no one says he's upstaging anyone.
EmpressGladys, you're my friend, but Aretha's voice is not "destroyed". It's of a different tone, but she's capable of taking a song and making it her own. She, just like Gladys, is still capable giving a song that extra dose of soul just like everyone else. Let's respect both Gladys and Aretha as they've given us so many great songs to carry us through life. Aretha is losing weight too, and her chest voice is still incredibly song. She doesn't sing in it as much due to weight.

Actually, Donny was not the original artist of this song. It was witten and performed by singer Leon russell. Then Donny remade this song. then Aretha did her own version. I think donnie's version is incredible but although Aretha is my favorite singer, her verison comes close to Donny but Gladys' version doesnt compare IMO.

Patti did a GREAT job on hers. When she walked away from the mic she tore that place apart. She and Gladys did the best Arethas wasnt that good to me..but she is great.
Gladys owned the stage that day, her performance was much better than Patti, and Arethas. Damn she in command of that voice. Gladys in my personal opinion is a much underated component of soul music.
Gladys Knight is a living Legend. Her expressions she puts in her songs makes you really get into the songs. Just enjoy because, there will never be another. Bow Down! What a voice and a command of the audience she draws with her singing.

Empress Gladys was spot on and the best performer on this show, so you say it's just ol' school. Empress Gladys' voice is UNDIMINISHED, and the jealousy eats at you. Obviously, Gladys is the standard by which you now judge. And you can only give your SUBJECTIVE opinion about what is more or less soulful and attack Gladys. What is a fact is that GLADYS has simply maintained and preserved her voice over the years. and Aretha hasn't. You can't accept that.

gladys's voice has gotten deeper, as has Aretha's. It's what happens to singers at the age. It's a natural process. Aretha Franklin is in good voice she can still hang. Her concert at Radio City Music Hall this year is a testament to that and Gladys Knight's UK tour right is a testament she can still do amazing.

I don't think high notes measure a singer. It is the soul and their ability to reflect that through song. Sure, there are people out there who feel their music and there are people out there that can hit high notes, but unless your able to convey a feeling that makes the audience feel more than a "high note" or "vocal acrobatic" you're wasting your time singing. This is why singers like Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin have had such longevity with their career and memorable songs.

empress,i saw the undisputed queen of soul last july 09 30lbs slimmer with a voice that electrified that whole auditorium. aretha sounded amazing and the more weight she looses, the more phenominal she sounds. aretha hit so many different high notes,jazzy wavy notes and hit so many unusual different sounds that only she can do. ask the 1st black president. gladys wish like hell she could after all these yrs bless this world on the grand stage the way queen aretha did with her song. dont hate!!!

I will say when Aretha goes on stage she has made sure her presence is known and not forgotten. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to be backup, and I've seen performances where all three of these singes have tried to upstage other singers they perform with. It'll show off vocal theatrics, but I enjoy the solo work from both Gladys and Aretha more than stuff they've done with other female singers. They've both got some great dues with male and females though in spite of this.

I wouldn't say Aretha won't share the stage with other singers. She has performed with many singers ranging from Gladys Knight, Natalie cole, Whitney Houston, Cissy Houston, tramain Hawkins, Chaka Khan, and Patti Labelle. I don't think she's scared. A Lot of people view her interpretations of singing a lyric shortly after the other person as her trying to upstage them, but it's technique that Ray Charles also uses and no one says he's upstaging anyone.

EmpressGladys, you're my friend, but Aretha's voice is not "destroyed". It's of a different tone, but she's capable of taking a song and making it her own. She, just like Gladys, is still capable giving a song that extra dose of soul just like everyone else. Let's respect both Gladys and Aretha as they've given us so many great songs to carry us through life. Aretha is losing weight too, and her chest voice is still incredibly song. She doesn't sing in it as much due to weight.

empress, aretha taught gladys and patti because aretha was and is the 1st lady of soul when patti and gladys doo wopping 50's RB struggling in their groups while aretha was a solo act with her own band soul phenomenom. gladys and all other females had to get with the program and copy arethas soulful style as best as possible because aretha started female soul and perfectec it and was the hottest thing going and a documented historical fact. aretha is the queen bee, gladys,a wannabee. recognize!!

and my dear friend empress gladys, gladys voice has aged. its deeper,deeper and more hoarse and husky with her age. the only thing that ever effected aretha illustrious voice was her weight and even with the weight, aretha always outsang gladys with more soul and flavor. i saw aretha 30 lbs slimmer last summer at the fox and sang spectacular beyonds words. still on a much higher level than gladys! empress, you dont have to call aretha the queen, a simple your highness will do. lets be real

Empress of Soul Gladys has 7 Grammies, numerous American Music Awards, and I could go on and on. But cigarettes, weight and bad living has ruined Aretha's once glorious voice. Gladys' soulful voice remains as beautiful as ever. And "outsing" is such a subjective term. You may prefer Aretha, but she is in no way a superior singier to Gladys, just different. Nothing but love and respect for Sister Ree, but she has always been reluctant to share the stage with other strong female vocalists.

Nothing but love for Sister Ree here, but it does sound as if you are trying to convince yourself. I watched the show when it aired. Empress Gladys was clearly more spot on that day and the crowd's favorite. Empress Gladys, chosen to sing at the King of Pop's funeral, is a SUPERNOVA talent. And the world is so fortunate that her booming voice is so undiminished.

so i say that to say this. lets face it, the 90's music was more comtemporary RB and aretha was still able to out perform patti and gladys. patti and gladys had better material, but aretha, the undisputed queen of soul/jazz/blues/gospel/opera/ ect. could work that voice more unique and display more vocal and technical skills much better than glady's lovely, yet hoarse and patti's lovely, yet screechy voice . if aretha had sang old school 60's/70's, aretha would have been kicking ass shonuff

gladys is always magnificent and so is patti, but lets be for real, they performed well because they were able to use the good old school soulful stuff from the 60's/70's. patti and gladys had nothing new at that time. aretha performed brand new stuff from baby face in the 90s, under contract, getting paid, still winning grammys and still upstaging the hell out of gladys and patti. plus, aretha sang twice and took over the whole damn show and why? because she can. she got it like that! see!

Actually, Donny was not the original artist of this song. It was witten and performed by singer Leon russell. Then Donny remade this song. then Aretha did her own version. I think donnie's version is incredible but although Aretha is my favorite singer, her verison comes close to Donny but Gladys' version doesnt compare IMO.
