Guitar, violin, viola, mandolin, dobro, banjo, lap steel and I sing. I do sessions and teach for a living. You can hear me on my page or with the band I'm currently finishing an album with. "Druckfarben" In my spare time I drink excessively and taunt drummers as my alter ego "Mr. Ignorance"
@edidpro I'm a drummer and I have to say...dude, you're right. A lot of times modern day drum charts really are that easy to get through. It's not a bad thing, you probably should be giving a break to the guy who needs to be the most solid. Guitarist's can drop some notes and it's no big but if the drums are on some bullshit, it's ALLLLLLLL over.
Come on guys, any musician of this caliber , reads music like sentences, have to be precise , otherwise they dont get the gig, at least as a freelance musican you have to read like Colaiuta or carlock right here hehe
yeah, it's a good thing no musician in this world sounds like anyone else. I love it when EVERY musician in the world has their own COMPLETELY ORIGINAL sound, including Scofield. We're all so fortunate.
the musical ability in this group is crazy! all of them are at the top of their game.......just amazing to watch....... personally, i think Carlock is the best fit with Oz Noy out of weckl, Fig and Colaiuta
This is sick. Real interesting melodies n form! Great sound. It's good to hear Will Lee play like this. He's on another planet. Keith Carlock just shreds this thing.
@bell0039 listen closely to the accents keith is hitting, they are very close to the most of the guitar parts, and you can see he is reading his ass off. amazing stuff
@Baddstuff I didn't say anything about reading giving you chops. If you want chops, practice chops. If you want to be able to read, practice that too. I was just saying that being able to read music, which I think should be mandatory, will give you the "one up" on someone who can't read; especially if you want to do studio sessions like Keith. You can have all the chops in the world, but there are people in the world who don't get gigs, namely recording sessions, because they can't read.
@smurd82 Actually you don't need to read music to be a good musician. It helps to communicate and write down ideas, and of course it's good to have that knowledge, especially to be a session musician, but there are thousands of great musicians who can't or coudn't read (George Benson, Robben Ford, Dennis Chambers, Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Maceo Parker, Paco de Lucia...).
@JusticieroDeLaMuerte But if you want to be a top professional musician, reading music is a must. I get gigs all the time were people send me the sheets and I have to learn the drum parts in a few days for a whole setlist.
@TheSyncopator Maybe you have wider rage of possibilities when getting a gig, recording session... but GOOD MUSICIAN doesn't equal MUST READ. Michael Landau is not a good reader, but is one of the most demanded session musicians, because he knows what the song needs, sounds great, he has good taste, creativity, groove... etc, etc. And those things have nothing to do with reading. Of course reading will help you, but in my opinion is not a MUST.
@JusticieroDeLaMuerte I never said a "good musician" needs to know how to read. I said a top professional musician. I am by no means an only sheet music type of guy. I started drumming at three and didnt learn to read until I was 13. Just saying, If you wanna get more gigs and get paid, then It is a huge plus to read. I have nothing against people that cant read music.
just heard about this guy a couple minutes ago...i like it. oz is fresh and inventive, but to me the drums stick out as being the star of the show. the tone of that kit is nice. i ike the srv style lick at 1:32!
I saw Steely with Ricky Lawson and Carlock , they both were amazing !!! Check Chambers with Tower of Power video here , so amazing , the dynamics and groove.
Just watch from 2:55 to 3:10 how the drums and guitar lock in to the same phrasing! And Keith is probably sightreading for Christ's-sake! That's Musicianship!
reading is no big deal for Keith Carlock .. he went to North Texas State . A world famous jazz program there . He played in the top jazz band ... the famous 1 o`clock lab band ... the same one gregg bissonette , steve houghton and ed soph played in .
WIll Fucking Lee....this is the bass player all the young Jaco Wanna-Bees need to pay attention to. Will does it all; funk, rock, jazz, blues...and for those who don't know, Will sings his ASS off! His jingle credits are legendary. First time I've ever heard Oz...he smokes! And Carlock...damn...I had no idea he was that freakin' good!
Kieth dude your the best drummer ive ever seen. Your work with Steely Dan is real impressive. At the end of the song ASIA live, thats just pure awsome! keep up the great work!

For those of you who think the guitar player's tone needs to be "fattened" up, Oz Noy happens to believe that too much distortion actually makes a guitar sound too thin. This video doesn't do his tone any justice. On his albums he achieves a very psychadelic, fusiony stevie ray vaughan tone.
Will Lee "wanks" on David Letterman? If your going to "wank" then at least make a TON OF MONEY DOING IT! That way you can play your fun stuff when you want for who you want.
