All schools should be private. Government gives school voucher for all students. Parent decide what schools get voucher. Then all schools would want the voucher and make teachers compete for jobs in the schools. 1 bad teacher gets fired and someone good replaces them with good salary provided by the vouchers. Simple as that. Then schools would be pressure into making kids learn or be out of business.

there are loads of rubbish teachers in public schools. teaching should be a prestigious job (which it is in some countries), but instead it's almost an embarassment for some people. I have had some brilliant teachers in more challenging classes but some of them do not belong around children

If all schools were privatized it would actually be a good thing. First of all, prices would go way down, since every child would attend one. If the kid can't cut it or never goes to class, the parents would most likely take them out, because of the money, most likely to getting them into the workforce earlier or learning a trade; stop wasting time and energy. Secondly, schools would have to compete with each other, individually. Good schools get more students and money, the bad ones go broke.
public schools are not "crap". many people had a succesful career just find with a public school. but if you want to go to a private, you have to have the money, 'smartness' haha and a good one.

I went to both a private and public school growing up, the material was essentially the same. Though I feel that the teachers were better at getting me to understand the material at the private school, though that could just be individual and not based on private vs. public.
UC Berkeley, UCLA and many other schools around the country beat most of the Private schools in academic excellence and job placement. Proud to be heading to one of those two soon!
I went to public school from K-12 and everything was fine until I got to middle school after leaving high school I told myself that I would never send my kids to public school. There was a gang rape and stabbling in my middle school and the high school had fights daily. We had food fights and everything would be thrown including chairs and lunch trays. It was awful. This is just some of the problems. lol

I was accepted to both private school and public school (college, major - art). I notice that private school, you start at the beginning at the easiest basics you know and learn in high school and they seem to take advantage and choose the courses for you. I didn't like the fact that i must start from the beginning up and just wasting my time doing it. So i decide to go to public instead. I can take any other courses and learn more instead of one major thing.

I've been to both, and I prefer public school. At private school, you have bible study class twice a week. They also push you much harder (more homework, assignments etc) and the classes are very boring.
Also, there are WAY more bullies. About 1/4 of the entire grade 8 were bullies to me. There are also lots of spoiled little rich kids who diss people who can't afford the latest iPods, phones and shit like that.
There are also far more rules and restrictions (detention for untucked shirt)

I think a big factor in all this is the grading standard differences between public and private schools. There was a study done at my University of several elementary, middle and high schools in the state that were public and private and it showed that the only reason private schools had higher "pass" rates was because the standard for a passing grade was lowered to 45%, whereas a "pass" in the public school system was a minimum 60%. Private schools just boast numbers, not good education.
i've gone to a private school from pre-k to 10th grade. i hate it so much. it's so depressing. there's hardly any kids there at all. 267 total (pre-k to 12th) i was lucky to find one good friend. but everyone i knew left as soon as they could. it's terrible. the curriculum is terrible. my class spent SIX MONTHS studying one book. i found out today that i get to go to a public school and i almost cried i was so happy =)
The big major problem with no child left behind is that while they are making sure that no child is being left behind that they don't let kids who show the need to be challenged excel! The smarter kids get neglected because they want to make everyone at the same level, so our country's IQ is going down more and more and no one is saying anything!

I'm middle class, not rich at all, my dad's in the military and my mum is a teacher (in a public school), and a large number of kids who attended were middle class as well. I dont think the actual education itself is streets ahead, but I think the environment is easier to learn in as the facilities are much better and the resources available to teachers are greater.
I've attended both public schools and private schools in my scholastic career, and think that private schools get an unfair amount of generalized hatred and dislike directed towards them. I attended The King's School in Sydney, Australia and it is arguably one of the best/most prestigious private schools in the country. Most people think that private schools are full of stuck up arrogant pricks, but this is not true at all, at least it wasn't at King's. Sure there were the odd few..

The school that I go to is a public charter school that was designed for the children with interests in the arts and of very wealthy backgrounds(I am not rich at all. You are basing your views on public/private school on experience. This experience based on a private school is very specific to the school, different private schools perform differently. Public schools work mostly on the same ciriculum but use different teaching methods than one another. In the end, if you want to compare the public/private schools you need to use statistics NOT anectdotes(short stories).
I am at university now, but have only been to state schools. State schools are so much better because it actually opens your eyes to the real world, the diversity, poverty etc...
Also private school kids are mainly upper class kids who think they are better then the rest, and have lived their whole life with their heads in the sand and dont know what real life is.

Most private school students are from the upper class, as most schools charge at least several thousand pounds a year which no proper middle class family can afford to pay. Upper middle/upper class can, but not normal middle class.

A lot of poor families just cant afford to send their kids to private school. The average grammar school is around £6000per year, which would be £42000 in total, and then they will have to pay for university as well which costs another few thousand pounds a year.
there is no way anyone else who earns the average wage, or even a fair bit above the average wage could find that £42000 plus university fees whilst also paying the mortgage, putting food on the table and other living expenses.
I don't go to a private school. It's a public charter that makes your parents pay. The students there, while there aren't any cliques, are incredibly unaccepting. I always eat lunch by myself and my education isn't as good as the education I got a the completely free of charge state charter schools.

I am a "typical ordinary parent who can not work the system. I tried enrolling my kingdergardner who can read very well and is coming home telling me he is learning one letter everday into a maget program. I was advised that the better schools in the public school system known as magnet schools where some children are learning a different language has a waiting list. I also was advised that the system is based on a lottery. I am so disgusted with the public school system.
I loved the way Mr. Obama answered the question. My son is going to public school and and last week the school'school report card came out. The school's attendance rating was higher than any other in the state and district but the test scores were lower than any other in the state and district in all cateogories. I went to both a private and public school growing up, the material was essentially the same. Though I feel that the teachers were better at getting me to understand the material at the private school, though that could just be individual and not based on private vs. public.

I went to public school from K-12 and everything was fine until I got to middle school after leaving high school I told myself that I would never send my kids to public school. There was a gang rape and stabbling in my middle school and the high school had fights daily. We had food fights and everything would be thrown including chairs and lunch trays. It was awful. This is just some of the problems. lol

Most of america's private schools are actually really good and I would actually recommend you to 1) move out of that HORRID place (at least from what you make it sound) and 2) send them to a public school and if you're too scared to honestly at least send them to one of those schools that are public but with auditions.

Public schools are very dangerous places. I cannot trust the teachers, principals, supervisors and the chancellor. That is why I will not send my child to a public school in NYC.
With an eraser, any teacher can change the wrong answers and bubble up the right ones and change the grades to support the statistics.

I was accepted to both private school and public school (college, major - art). I notice that private school, you start at the beginning at the easiest basics you know and learn in high school and they seem to take advantage and choose the courses for you. I didn't like the fact that i must start from the beginning up and just wasting my time doing it. So i decide to go to public instead. I can take any other courses and learn more instead of one major thing.

I've been to both, and I prefer public school. At private school, you have bible study class twice a week. They also push you much harder (more homework, assignments etc) and the classes are very boring.
Also, there are WAY more bullies. About 1/4 of the entire grade 8 were bullies to me. There are also lots of spoiled little rich kids who diss people who can't afford the latest iPods, phones and shit like that.
There are also far more rules and restrictions (detention for untucked shirt)

I think a big factor in all this is the grading standard differences between public and private schools. There was a study done at my University of several elementary, middle and high schools in the state that were public and private and it showed that the only reason private schools had higher "pass" rates was because the standard for a passing grade was lowered to 45%, whereas a "pass" in the public school system was a minimum 60%. Private schools just boast numbers, not good education.

i've gone to a private school from pre-k to 10th grade. i hate it so much. it's so depressing. there's hardly any kids there at all. 267 total (pre-k to 12th) i was lucky to find one good friend. but everyone i knew left as soon as they could. it's terrible. the curriculum is terrible. my class spent SIX MONTHS studying one book. i found out today that i get to go to a public school and i almost cried i was so happy =)

The big major problem with no child left behind is that while they are making sure that no child is being left behind that they don't let kids who show the need to be challenged excel! The smarter kids get neglected because they want to make everyone at the same level, so our country's IQ is going down more and more and no one is saying anything!

... but the vast majority of kids were the exact opposite. I'm middle class, not rich at all, my dad's in the military and my mum is a teacher (in a public school), and a large number of kids who attended were middle class as well. I dont think the actual education itself is streets ahead, but I think the environment is easier to learn in as the facilities are much better and the resources available to teachers are greater.

I've attended both public schools and private schools in my scholastic career, and think that private schools get an unfair amount of generalized hatred and dislike directed towards them. I attended The King's School in Sydney, Australia and it is arguably one of the best/most prestigious private schools in the country. Most people think that private schools are full of stuck up arrogant pricks, but this is not true at all, at least it wasn't at King's. Sure there were the odd few..

I went to a private Catholic school for two years and it was so awful that is was a contributer to my current Atheist status. PBS actually did a better job at teaching me to read than my teachers at that school.

It was like living with rich spoiled kids and their parents. Soon, I went to a very good public school. The teachers were motivated, more diversity of kids, I made more friends. You are basing your views on public/private school on experience. This experience based on a private school is very specific to the school, different private schools perform differently. Public schools work mostly on the same ciriculum but use different teaching methods than one another. In the end, if you want to compare the public/private schools you need to use statistics NOT anectdotes(short stories).

Most private school students are from the upper class, as most schools charge at least several thousand pounds a year which no proper middle class family can afford to pay. Upper middle/upper class can, but not normal middle class.

A lot of poor families just cant afford to send their kids to private school. The average grammar school is around £6000per year, which would be £42000 in total, and then they will have to pay for university as well which costs another few thousand pounds a year.
there is no way anyone else who earns the average wage, or even a fair bit above the average wage could find that £42000 plus university fees whilst also paying the mortgage, putting food on the table and other living expenses.

A private school education doesn't guarantee your kids will turn out to be doctors & lawyers & not all Private school kids are smart. The environment is more sheltered because these schools carefully select kids & you rarely worry about school violence. I think public schools can give you more important life lessons since they are much more of a replica of the real world rather than a confined world in which what is private school. I tried enrolling my kingdergardner who can read very well and is coming home telling me he is learning one letter everday into a maget program. I was advised that the better schools in the public school system known as magnet schools where some children are learning a different language has a waiting list. I also was advised that the system is based on a lottery. I am so disgusted with the public school system.

In theory there should be some good public schools. My parents were told that the elementary school in my area was top notch, but it was terrible. I'm a sophmore in private school now. Kids at public school..I'm really sorry for the crap they have to deal with. ok, I really do not get it private schools kids usually in my county usually go to like NYU at the most and some IV leagues. While last year 5 kids got into harvard from my public school..

Interestingly enough, two candidates on the stage have kids who went to Quaker school, Biden and Hillary.

Biden was mistaken. He said Wilmington Friends, which is a Quaker school. Then later he says it was Catholic school.

Actually it sounds like they went to both...sounds like they started in a Catholic school and switched to Willington after their Aunt started taking care of them because she works there. Thank you for clarifying that for me.

well the problem with him was that the question asked did NOT deal with NCLB...he should have responded during that question, not whiz thru this one so he had time to go backwards.
