I agree it was a mistake to cut through the tree - perhaps cutting through it saved it from being felled. Thye chopped a lot of the ancient trees down before a lot of people protested and halted the felling. The timber from the Redwoods isn't even very good quality - what a waste, and lost forever.

With a DBH that large i wouldnt worry about it. for a tree of these size the things to look for are dead branches up in the crown that could snap off in the wind and hit somebody. also because of the wind it is important to keep an eye on the root ball, if there is excessive rot the tree would die and easily become a deadfall. as long as water from the roots can make it up to the foliage to photosynthesize the tree will survive. if they had cut out a wrap around full service bar, then id be wor
