  • is there a military commitment with the merchant marine academy?

  • Comment removed

  • @636roadrunner

You may have already found this out since this was posted 7 months ago... But I just did some research and no, there is no military commitment. It's like a average job... you can quit whenever...

  • @636roadrunner Yes, with either the USCG or Navy if you go the USMMA route. The six state academies, NO, you don´t have to become a reserve officer, you can just go Merchant Marine.

  • sure thing man. no worries. be safe out there

  • Im aware of what the merchant "marine" does. Im a mariner myself, and have worked with the military several times. What I meant by that was, the navy seriously lacks some good seamanship skills lol

  • Brotha in the vid you just another tool in the tyrannical system of commerce...sad

  • Very nice collection of your travels. As one Mariner to another- Fair Winds and Following Seas.

  • US Merchant Marine all the way! God bless our Vets! A big thanks to those who served in the WW-2 Merchant Marine! Our men and women in uniform (and in the Merchant Marine!) and their families have sacrificed so much, and all Americans owe them a debt of gratitude for their service.

  • I didnt ask if he was cheating I only asked how like was out there. I was just asking a question not for your judgement of me and my relationship. I know he is not cheating. Why do you have to be such an ass about it though is what i dont understand, that was really mean and uncalled for, and quite frankly I am offended.

  • Comment removed

  • @MissClassyDiva If you gotta ask he's already cheating on you and you knew the answer but wanted some kinda "confirmation" first...

The rate of casual sexual enconters, divorce, STD's etc in the worldwide Merchant Marine/Navy is no higher than for any other occupation.

Go on-board a ship a scumbag, you leave one. Go on-board as a decent person, you leave as one.

  • @ElProfGringo dont ever compare merchant seamen to the navy again. you deserve a slap in the face.

  • @ronaldronald

The navy is WORSE than the Coast Guard!

    Merchant Seaman are REAL SAILORS!

  • @ElProfGringo Navy Diver her, I dont see Merchant Marines doing Saturation Dives in the Soutth Pacific, or Diving off the Coast of North korea.....soooo I really dont see how the Navy is worse? I have seen more countries than any merchant mariner I have ever met...

  • you step on my Sneakers...

  • OMG! That is the coolest shot at 2:36 with the sunset behind the ship!

  • There are 2 types of merchant mariners. Passengers and engineers. Looks like a bunch of passengers to me lol...Just kidding. Great video!! Keep it up and safe sailing!

  • Comment removed

  • Hey thats me at 1:10 lol. i remember that, getting ready for the trip to Korea. hey what up carlos! hope everythings going well for you my friend. no longer sailing, got a nice "land" job now.

  • @DKnyght That must have been one heck of an offer . Carlos looks like he really enjoyed the Merchant life. Be well

  • @ttyradio yah, i got burnt out on it.. 5 years of it.. and dealing with a screwball union really just makes it not worth it to me. but all in all its great once you finally get there.

  • thats where im going this summer on the TS Golden Bear!

  • Awe man ! I just got my TWIC and am waiting for my MMD to be processed . I only hope I can get my foot in the door ,well ( hatch) . I can't wait ! I'm not married either . heh heh .Just kidding. You guys make it look as cool as being James Bond though! LOL!

  • how the fuck do people get that job. i can see it now my life exactly the same. minus my gay ass uniform. you guys got it good. all the benifits non of the bullshit.

wow im glade i check grammer lol.

  • love the video man. i do that down here in new orleans, but i want to be on the boat.

  • Thanks for sharing

  • Maersk Sealand 'Comet.' That's my ship. Champion class baby!

  • Good video, but there are more jobs available in the domestic fleet on tugs and barges. I agree pre Valdez it was a party to get away from the wife. A lot more professional now. But still we had a really good time!

  • Is there an age limit to joining the Merchant Marines? I'm 28.

  • @jwill5587

    No

It has NOTHING to do with the military

  • You gotta hear the stories about sailing pre-EXXON VALDEZ days. Nowadays if you sail under an American flagged ship it's one nation under piss tests.

  • @nretelas

Yeah, maybe that's why the Valdez happened in first place?

Stoned, drunk, wasted mariners in charge of an oil tanker... yeah nothing like the "good" ole days...

  • @ElProfGringo

I always appreciate sassy, sarcastic comments. As a 2nd Mate in the USMM, I fail to find the humor. There are just as many people stoned, drunk, or "Wasted," as you so eloquently put it, nowadays as there were in the old days.

Here's how I know you have no clue about the USMM: The Exxon 'Valdez' had nothing to do with the Captain being drunk; he was not drunk to begin with. It was a lover's quarrel that caused a communication breakdown and pride kept one officer from acknowledging

  • @nretelas

    So you're a deck ape?

U a hawespiper or an academy grad?

And RU AMO, MMP or what?

Engine room is the way 2 go, buddy.

  • And yeah, buddy I've sailed plenty of ships in the USMM and I've heard all the stories about the "good-ole" pre-Valdez days. Sailors drunk on watch. Officers passed out drunk. Crew smoking weed on-board and guys strung out on drugs.

And as a result mariners are now drug tested. On-board kits must be kept for both post-accident drug and alcohol testing. Taking the single hull tankers outta service provided a boon of orders to US shipyards for the Jones Act trade. Look at all the new builds!

  • BTW the Valdez wasn't the only incident in the 80's that changed public perception and caused US transportation to be better regulated. A Conrail freight that hit an Amtrak train in 87 was also big news. The crew on the Conrail admitted to being high on weed after testing positive.

Joseph Hazelwood was a drunk with 3 DUI's and a suspended DL. He should have NEVER had command of the Valdez, let alone a row-boat. Thankfully the USCG now checks NDR's and NCIC for DUI's, drug convictions etc.

  • @ElProfGringo Exactly. One DUI these days, and you cannot get or renew youre USCG license.

  • priceless video, great music thanks for sharing. peace.

  • Great job on video! Had a vid that the crew of the S.S. Cape Ann did up up that I wanted to post but ughh! The tape is ruined from mold, pre dvd and internet days. Working in the Gulf of Mexico, miss the big ships but have family and can't be out of work sitting at the hall just hoping to get a job anymore. Still believe in S.I.U.

  • i leave on november 9th

  • i leave for piney point in sept, class # 726. its been a long and grueling past year but i fanally got in.

  • hellenic merchant marine always the bigger

  • haha. I LIVE in saipan, and im going to the USMMA!

  • Good Job!!!...The Merchant Marine unveiled from a US crew that loves

their job while traveling the world and

serving their nation and families at

    the same time!!!

From a former LYKES LINES Master

  • Lykes Lines...The company featured in "Looking for a ship" by John McPhee.

What was it like being a master there?

  • great vid. i just recieved my mmd card and about to get my twic card. i leave for paul hall school of seamanship in a few weeks cant wait to get started.

  • same here. Getting my twic card at the US coast card facility in NY city next week.

  • got all my cards and in norfolk va and still no work

  • i'm on waitn list fo siu

  • Carlos, I'm impressed with what you do. You are truly enjoying life. Do you ever come to Tampa, Florida?

  • hey carlos, what is a good website to get info on how to become a merchant marine? and is the pay salary?

  • merchant *mariner* is the person, "merchant marine" refers to the entire merchant fleet of a country. google "uscg licensing", choose the first link, side bar of that page, "new mariners". that'll get you started.

  • usually you get payed on a per day basis, and with most ships you have to sign a contract as to how long you have to work for the ship. could be a month, could be 6. all depends on the ship. i would say the pay is resonable, though dont expect to get rich.

  • i heard from a few people thats how its is to be a merchant marine , i hope its really like that

  • Hell yeah it is! Subic bay, Singapore, Dubai, Hongkong, Rota Spain...Its a fun job man.

  • thats cool!

  • Good Video! Is that ship with Military sealift Command or contracted? I just recieved my 3rd mates license and this is exactly why I chose this line of work!

  • I'm seriously thinking about joining. Can anyone help me?

  • I would be glad to tell me what you need?

  • what do i need to to to get started?

  • a Merchant Mariner's Document and STCW Training, check out the USCG website or just look up where you you can take STCW classes. Also apply for a TWIC

  • sailing is awesome... im actually going for my 3rd phase this thursday cant wait to grad and hit the ocean. fuck me a thai slut whoohoo

  • Get you some Thai STD's whooohooo!

  • how do i do this?

  • hey u wouldnt happen to be SUP?

  • I'm Guessing You're the Private Sector

  • Great video. I'm envious you get to spend so much time in the Far East.
