I've written poems about pipe smoking whilst studying for my degree. Your mind tends to hold itself and linger in much the same way as the smoke. That for me is part of the pleasure I get from it. Taking up the pipe wasn't a decision I took lightly. I realise that I'd smoked a cigar occasionally for a few years but wanted something more sentimental and something that tasted better. So pipe smoking seemed the way forward.

The origin of Tobacco; It is said that a Prophet was walking one day and came upon a wounded snake. The prophet was overcome with compassion for the creature and nursed it to health. After being restored to health, the snake said to the Prophet "I shall bite thee". The serpent bit him and he sucked out the poison. A tobacco plant grew from where the poison and blood hit the ground. It is said that the plant contained both the kindness of the Prophet and the poison of the snake.
