jesus christ can't anybody listen to an old recording on youtube these days without lamenting on how he/she was born too late? this is here and now lol. pick out the good stuff and make the best of it. by the way, this woman had the sexiest vocals of all time. ella fitz, sara vaughan, she leaves em all in the dust... nobody comes close.
Interprète de talent à la voix suave et grave, Julie London chantait sur tous les registres, que ce soit du Jazz, du Swing ou des mélodies Jazzy ! J'adore !
I love her singing, as always, but I'm not too keen on the orchestra. It's the best version I've heard sung. Ella Fitzgerald plays around with it too much.
When I sang and played (on guitar) this song at an open mic a while back, a guy (a bass player for another band) came up and complimented me by saying "I love your voice! Sounded like Julie London..." So I was curious what she really sounded like. Men, I'm really flattered!! She sounds great! She's very straight forward and subtle but her sensual voice carries a lot of nuances...
she was quoted as saying, "It's only a thimbleful of a voice, and I have to use it close to the microphone. But it is a kind of oversmoked voice, and it automatically sounds intimate."
It is difficult to believe but, in her day, Julie was better loved and had wider appeal than Marilyn Monroe. What happened? Marilyn died tragically and left a beautiful corpse.
I was born in 68. I grew up loving rock and roll and heavy metal. Now at 41 this is were it is at. I still love metal/rock and the "hair bands" of past but this is where its at. Sorry Judas Priest, You do have to be old(er) to be wise. You can always rock though. Julie London is the sexiest woman to ever walk the planet. Really loving the jazz scene now.
@nauort23 well personally i think the greatest era of sensible people (for the most part anyways) is around the 1920-1950's. The Great Depression sucks of course, but still for the most part of what I hate about this era was amazing during that era. Just a personal opinion of course.
My parents were born 1922-3, and yes, they're very sensible. They don't challenge/question much, especially when it's coming from priests or doctors or the nightly news..., but most of their generation are all very sensible with money; they all write beautifully (in terms of grammar, vocabulary & penmanship); they're generally better mannered and they definitely grew up with the best popular music: jazz, showtunes, swing, lounge, etc.... Just my opinion, of course!
@nauort23 You are dead right old son. Mine too. But due to age i still write with a fountain pen and ink AND I've a collection of jazz, song, and some others. I love them all. But too damn sal that there's almost no one to replace those greats. Duke, Count, Getz, Parker, Le Grand, et al It's a different time BUT Thank God we can still collect, play and love their stuff. - david
@Tommyfazz Considering they were still in grade school when Hitler rose to power, I'd say your opinion is fairly unsound--and certainly not factual. They definitely brought WWII to an end, though. Thanks for giving them credit.
@Drunkz101 -- I wasn't. Now 72, I was in college when Julie was singing, "Cry Me a River". Damn . . . fell in love with Julie and Ella, fell in lust with Eartha and Lena.

Julie had such a jazzy streak. Too bad she is not remembered for it. Exceptional (despite the cheesy arrangement)!
NYCBG 6 months ago
@NYCBG Well, let's say that Julie is ....more versatile.....than just a jazz singer.
Her talent is ways beyond the scope of one genre.
There're a long lists of great jazz singers, but a very short lists of all-rounders like Julie London.
