i think age of conan is best pvp game.Many kind of feat builds for each class, need to have skill for hit your combos so makes duels and wars more variable.
Darkfall and RuneScape = most hardcore pvp. You're probably going to laugh at me for RuneScape but try some high-risk f2p, pure or hybrid pking and you'll find just how thrilling it is. No joke.

@vexatuvex If eve online bored you then you were not playing it right. Stop stareing into the asteroids all day and get yourself involved with some group pvp. It is very hard to be bored in an 800 man fight over control of an entire region of the game.
WoW is shitty shitty PvP the only thing that's even close to good on WoW's PvP is arena sorry. Addons and macros DO do all the work for all players and there really is no skill needed any longer its very true.

@Beerfornothing i do agree with you on your first point but Dark Age of Camelot had a TON of mods. From changing not only the size of the UI items, but also the shape, you could literally make a health bar into an oldschool health potion indicator from Diablo if you wanted. WOW was the first MMO to blow millions on advertising. Trust me if DAoC had advertised as much as WOW there would be no WOW.

@vaughnteper eh, i wouldn't say wow's pvp is the funnest, but it's deffinatley taken more seriously. my friend plays high end arenas and if u make one little slip up u get ur whole arena team yelling at you and making u feel like shit. thats why i don't like pvp in wow. it's more of like a competitive job than it is a game. rather play newer games like league of legends where ppl are still getting the hang of the game rather than games like wow where ppl play for 10 years and know everything.
@ghty102 I'm not sure why WoW players are so brutal. There's not really anything at stake in the pvp arenas. You can't lose anything.
Take the contrasting example of Shadowbane. Players build cities, they change the map. They have that power. Someone else can come along, siege you and burn your city to the ground. You lose very real things (as real as pixels are anyway). Yet, the players are friendlier to guild-mates/team-members who make mistakes. I think WoW just attracts lousy people.

@vaughnteper the risk/reward in wow's pvp is at higher stakes because it is a public RATING on how good you are as a player. if you fuck up and loose 10 games everyone that you will want to play with in the future can see that and will know your a bad player. i've never played shadowbane but i assume you have the option to rebuild your castle.
@ghty102 Limited real estate slots divided by region. One city owner can rule a region. The reward is penning the future lore of the game in the blood of your enemies. The risk is failing and being shat on by every future player...so no, in the intangible realm of pixels WoW still doesn't win.
@vaughnteper i rely haven't played both games so i can't honestly compare them. i've heard shadowbane was a great pvp game, but i think the aspect of WoW being an E sport is something that hangs over the heads of all it's competitive players. Kindof the feeling that you play more than someone and will still never be able to compete on their level makes loosing just feel diminishing as a gamer. like you want to go to tournaments and mlg and compete for money but you have to have 0 mistakes.
@ghty102 I would love to say that both are worth playing but right now SB is dead. There's an emulator project in the works but it will be while yet. It's probably the best pvp mmo but it really lacks the pve grind/quest model that attracts a lot of gamers today.
I feel you about the zero mistake thing, I'm an air traffic controller and if we make a mistake we're automatically fired...but I still think that environ existing in WoW is just a product of a lousy player-base.
@ghty102 I'll go straight back to my observation of the quality of the average WoW player vs the quality of the average DAoC or SB player. Even with more at stake, they (my observation alone) don't seem to turn on each other and quibble like third-graders.
I blame the 'easy-mode' mechanics that WoW represents. It may have become the model of every failure game since but prior to it, games were deep. My experience in WoW was boring and unintuative, hardly worth getting bent out of shape over.
@vaughnteper while that maybe your opinion, the difference between WoW and SB is that in WoW everyone has the same gear-score (mostly). it's alot allot more skill based and alot less gear/(castle strength?) based. this is why it is frustrating to loose in games like WoW or fps's where you simply get outplayed, whereas in other games you could just get out-farmed/geared. its kindof a "hes not be a better player, he just has more time on his hands" ideology.
@ghty102 I've got to shoot that one down. WoW is very gear-based. If you don't have the gear you can't compete whereas DAoC or SB or even going all the way back to UO, a skilled player can compete with anyone on the basis of skill rather than on equipment.
Several different server starts on SB, I recall wasting other players with an unequipped (naked) character. That, if nothing else, is the most frustrating thing. To lose to a d-bag in his underwear =P

@ghty102 There is nothing skill based in WOW where AddOns and Macros do all the work for you. WOW was the first major MMO that embraced the modding community, and when it comes to PvP it removes nearly all skill. In fact, WOW isn't even designed for skilled players. Not everyone has the same gear score in WOW. And not everyone runs the same AddOns and Macros. I guarantee that everyone that PvPs uses a decent number of AddOns and Macros, which makes the game ridiculously easy (skill-less).

If you have played arena seriously in WoW you would know that in top end PvP everyone has the same gear. Macros and Addons do help you but it's not like with them you automaticaly become a gladiator. Do you honestly think becoming the best PvPer in WoW doesn't take any skill?

When game design necessitates that a player use AddOns and Macros that beep, flash, display msgs, or other sounds to alert said player that they should push a certain button(s) then the only thing you have done is trained a dog, a la Pavlov. The player habituates to the AddOn(s) beeps/flashes/msgs/sounds and isn't really responding to the game itself. That diminishes game skill and they become Pavlov's dog.

@vaughnteper each game is built to invoke different psycological reactions from it's playerbase. and while some games may attract a different type of gamer, they still invoke their own effects. be that relaxation (most rpgs), addreneline (most fps's), or logical thinking (rts/strategical games). it rely doesn't matter, someone can play a game like WoW or LoL and rage then turn around and space out in fable3. the game is responsible for the reactions of the players, not the other way around

I beat the dead horse of SB because it was one of the rare games dictated by the response of the players, a true sandbox, but it obviously failed because that environ isn't for every gamer nor is it for the hardcore gamer 100% of the time.
You raise probably the best point about the response games are designed to illicit. Sometimes you just feel like playing minesweeper, you know.
So it can hardly be called the best pvp game. WaR should have been top because both sides have practically the exact same classes just with different aesthetics, and the races get no special benefits.
Wow has serious balancing issues between the horde and alliance races, (for instance an orc warrior going up against a human warrior, the only major differences being that the orc has an ability to increase his damage (blood fury) and yet the human has something which wont help him much at all in comparison in a fight to the death, the ability to break free from being immobilised (every man for himself))
@MrMyers758 not that you cant equip a pvp trinket and have an stop CC as well, stop qqing about other race skills instead of maximizing your race's own skills. you left the human element out. its not what they have, its what you have and what you do with it, pvp is about know your abilities better than your opponent knows theres. sure there is some class imbalance where some class can be a little stronger, but it still shouldn't be a major issue if you know how to pvp. there is no race imbalance
Ok then, lets say there is a person as intelligent as you and so generally guys the same equipment to suit his class, basically the best stuff you can get for it. So in this instance both of the PLAYERS are on equal terms however one gets an unfair advantage based on their race. After all if they're both skilled tankers they are going to have near on if not the exact same gear. And then when you expand that out to a 40 vs 40 battle, the allies will get seriously screwed over.
@MrMyers758 what about undead's will of the forsaken? if im on my priest getting attacked by an undead rogue, and i hit psychic scream and he/she hits WotF isnt that unfair to the alliance? racial abilities have a small impact on the over all game, not everyone is playing human for "every man for himself" or undead for "will of the forsaken" you could call me insta healing my dk unfair based on racials, or taurens stun unfair or blood elves silence unfair. each race is unique, play them as such
world of warcraft is the best mmorpg, it has the best graphics, last the longest, has the best features like dragons, flying, mounts, races and two enitre teams!, idk how people say other games are better.. can you turn into a bear, flaming lion, tiger. TREE or a bird? where you can fly anywhere? i dont think so, and the pvp is amazing on wow! if you had the right skills you and a raid party could take down a city!, its had the most addons, it has books called "warcraft" a great story, dances!!

@vaughnteper eh, i wouldn't say wow's pvp is the funnest, but it's deffinatley taken more seriously. my friend plays high end arenas and if u make one little slip up u get ur whole arena team yelling at you and making u feel like shit. thats why i don't like pvp in wow. it's more of like a competitive job than it is a game. rather play newer games like league of legends where ppl are still getting the hang of the game rather than games like wow where ppl play for 10 years and know everything.

@ghty102 I'm not sure why WoW players are so brutal. There's not really anything at stake in the pvp arenas. You can't lose anything.
Take the contrasting example of Shadowbane. Players build cities, they change the map. They have that power. Someone else can come along, siege you and burn your city to the ground. You lose very real things (as real as pixels are anyway). Yet, the players are friendlier to guild-mates/team-members who make mistakes. I think WoW just attracts lousy people.

@vaughnteper the risk/reward in wow's pvp is at higher stakes because it is a public RATING on how good you are as a player. if you fuck up and loose 10 games everyone that you will want to play with in the future can see that and will know your a bad player. i've never played shadowbane but i assume you have the option to rebuild your castle.

@vaughnteper i rely haven't played both games so i can't honestly compare them. i've heard shadowbane was a great pvp game, but i think the aspect of WoW being an E sport is something that hangs over the heads of all it's competitive players. Kindof the feeling that you play more than someone and will still never be able to compete on their level makes loosing just feel diminishing as a gamer. like you want to go to tournaments and mlg and compete for money but you have to have 0 mistakes.

@ghty102 I would love to say that both are worth playing but right now SB is dead. There's an emulator project in the works but it will be while yet. It's probably the best pvp mmo but it really lacks the pve grind/quest model that attracts a lot of gamers today.
I feel you about the zero mistake thing, I'm an air traffic controller and if we make a mistake we're automatically fired...but I still think that environ existing in WoW is just a product of a lousy player-base.

@ghty102 I'll go straight back to my observation of the quality of the average WoW player vs the quality of the average DAoC or SB player. Even with more at stake, they (my observation alone) don't seem to turn on each other and quibble like third-graders.
I blame the 'easy-mode' mechanics that WoW represents. It may have become the model of every failure game since but prior to it, games were deep. My experience in WoW was boring and unintuative, hardly worth getting bent out of shape over.

@vaughnteper while that maybe your opinion, the difference between WoW and SB is that in WoW everyone has the same gear-score (mostly). it's alot allot more skill based and alot less gear/(castle strength?) based. this is why it is frustrating to loose in games like WoW or fps's where you simply get outplayed, whereas in other games you could just get out-farmed/geared. its kindof a "hes not be a better player, he just has more time on his hands" ideology.

@ghty102 I've got to shoot that one down. WoW is very gear-based. If you don't have the gear you can't compete whereas DAoC or SB or even going all the way back to UO, a skilled player can compete with anyone on the basis of skill rather than on equipment.
Several different server starts on SB, I recall wasting other players with an unequipped (naked) character. That, if nothing else, is the most frustrating thing. To lose to a d-bag in his underwear =P

@ghty102 There is nothing skill based in WOW where AddOns and Macros do all the work for you. WOW was the first major MMO that embraced the modding community, and when it comes to PvP it removes nearly all skill. In fact, WOW isn't even designed for skilled players. Not everyone has the same gear score in WOW. And not everyone runs the same AddOns and Macros. I guarantee that everyone that PvPs uses a decent number of AddOns and Macros, which makes the game ridiculously easy (skill-less).

When game design necessitates that a player use AddOns and Macros that beep, flash, display msgs, or other sounds to alert said player that they should push a certain button(s) then the only thing you have done is trained a dog, a la Pavlov. The player habituates to the AddOn(s) beeps/flashes/msgs/sounds and isn't really responding to the game itself. That diminishes game skill and they become Pavlov's dog.

@vaughnteper each game is built to invoke different psycological reactions from it's playerbase. and while some games may attract a different type of gamer, they still invoke their own effects. be that relaxation (most rpgs), addreneline (most fps's), or logical thinking (rts/strategical games). it rely doesn't matter, someone can play a game like WoW or LoL and rage then turn around and space out in fable3. the game is responsible for the reactions of the players, not the other way around

I beat the dead horse of SB because it was one of the rare games dictated by the response of the players, a true sandbox, but it obviously failed because that environ isn't for every gamer nor is it for the hardcore gamer 100% of the time.

Wow has serious balancing issues between the horde and alliance races, (for instance an orc warrior going up against a human warrior, the only major differences being that the orc has an ability to increase his damage (blood fury) and yet the human has something which wont help him much at all in comparison in a fight to the death, the ability to break free from being immobilised (every man for himself))

@MrMyers758 not that you cant equip a pvp trinket and have an stop CC as well, stop qqing about other race skills instead of maximizing your race's own skills. you left the human element out. its not what they have, its what you have and what you do with it, pvp is about know your abilities better than your opponent knows theres. sure there is some class imbalance where some class can be a little stronger, but it still shouldn't be a major issue if you know how to pvp. there is no race imbalance

Ok then, lets say there is a person as intelligent as you and so generally guys the same equipment to suit his class, basically the best stuff you can get for it. So in this instance both of the PLAYERS are on equal terms however one gets an unfair advantage based on their race. After all if they're both skilled tankers they are going to have near on if not the exact same gear. And then when you expand that out to a 40 vs 40 battle, the allies will get seriously screwed over.

In WoW - you cannot lose. That makes everyone a winner, which in turn means that you cannot truly win. If you cannot win or lose, then it is not a game. WoW is a chat program with - as you said - very nice graphics.

Sorry, this list sucks. WoW on no. 1? RuneScape has more exiting PvP features than WoW! At least you can lose your items on RS. Darkfall is BY FAR the most hardcore PvP MMO I've come across. Always enabled, full loot, no level restrictions. Mad clan fights, player village capturing, etc. Not a game for pussies.

MMORPG these days have turned into a gratuity fest when it comes to quality comparison. Game with real depth people consider to be dull. Game makers also pump out one exciting looking game after another without much depth in response.
WoW is one of those games that is great for gamers that wants gratuitous gameplay and are satisfied with a circular end game. Beat one raid for loot in order to beat another raid for example.
