HD DVD is dead. but dont cry, you could still upscale DVDs to 1080p through HDMI. and you could always buy HD movies form the Market place, and soon we will be getting Netflix
yea their is honestly no difference. Matter of fact, Hd-dvd was better than blu-ray because it had soo many features, but it wasn't built into the xbox360 like blu-ray was....which was a shame that toshiba gave up so easily because this was a really good format.

Yes. You can use it to take the wear and tare off the main drive. And playing a DVD in either drive (and not requiring the HD DVD drive itself) up-res a standard DVD to HD (I believe it requires the VGA or HDMI compatible 360 purely for copyright reasons.)
Wow the movie looks good even on youtube. HD DVD is good with computers and 360. But Blu ray fans sorry but the Blu ray Disc are not compatabul with PCs.
lol.. i seems that ur brain is not up to date. HD-DVD's original inventor TOSHIBA has anounced that they gave up HD-DVD's development due to the fact that most of the medias now choose blu-ray discs. BTW, a lot of laptops r equipped with blu-ray disc drive nowadays, and blu-ray drive for desktops r everywhere also.

"Look how small the dvd box is" "Look at all the fucking attachments and silly and whorish my gaming system looks". I just want to stick my weiner in the usb ports and hump it.
Circuit City has discontinued the HD-DVD format so it can expand it's Blu-Ray lineup.
It's Blu-Ray inventory is much bigger. Seven Circuit City stores were contacted. Three confirmed that the store has discontinued the HD-DVD format altogether, meaning Blu-Ray exclusive. This decision is probably based on company sales of the two formats which consisted of 87% for Blu-Ray disc and 13% for HD-DVD.
It will be any day before Toshiba announces the death of HD-DVD.
i dont sayng bluray sucks i just sayng hddvd its not bad ok?
peace
i dont undestende why we have to be on a big war betwen xbox 360 and ps3 just can we all admit the tow conssoles are good and some peapol prefere a xbox 360 or a ps3
Yeah, I mean who cares? HDDVD is still a HD product, it's good enough, besides Blu-ray movies don't usually use up a lot of space, about the size of a HDDVD.
It is not really a question of fanboyism anymore; companies that previously supported HD-DVD are mass migrating to Blue-Ray, Blue-Ray makes up the vast majority of sales now and retailers only really offer HD-DVD as a secondary choice.
Blue-ray has basically won, by the end of the year I wouldn't be surprised if HD-DVD sales stopped completely.
At the end of the day taking the price hit to include Blue-Ray on PS3 really paid off.
The one thing that bothers me about the 360 HD-DVD add-on is that it does not support DD+ and Dolby True HD, which are mandatory per HD-DVD spec. I'm a 360 owner, and if HD-DVD was not losing right now, I would've bought a Toshiba A30 or XA2 instead of the 360 HD-DVD add-on just to have the support of new codecs.
Yeah and the Xboxes with HDMI are only 1.2 complaint. At the time this was better than the first gen Toshiba players (those could not do 1080P) and it still boots quicker than most other stand alone players. You also have to remember that you must have a new surround sound receiver to process those new codecs.
blu-ray works with a blue laser, hd-dvd doesn't. The advantages of a blue laser are apparent. 30gb tops for hd-dvd, 50gb or more for blu-ray now! it's clearly the better technology, but it is more expensive. you get what you pay for.
They both use the same blue laser diode. However the Blu-Ray is angled differently than HD DVD thus having the data layer closer to the surface make the beam less diffused, allowing the pits and lans to be smaller so more can be packed onto the surface area of the disc allowing more data to be stored. The disc however is more susceptible to scratches so a clear "armored" coating has to be applied from the factory.
If you look at the date of this review, it was posted two days before the PS3 was released in America. The firmware that was current at the time of release did not scale anything (remember the whole downres for 1080i TV problem) The firmware update that enable scaling was not released until months after the initial release. Granted the 360 did not upres DVDs either out of the gate but had the function enable soon after launch as well.
well it shouldn't play xbox or 360 games because it can be used USB with a PC, and if games could be read by the drive then it would be pretty easy to script software to play xbox and 360 games on a computer
near the wii's release nintendo did officially say that they would make a wii with dvd capabilities, and at that time they said it would be out in summer of this year but they havent said anything since.
i heard there bringing out a new wii some time in the future which will play hd dvd, this is a n attempt from microsoft and nintendo to defeat ps3'ds blu ray i believe. however im not sure if this is tru
What is of interest is inside the case is a relatively generic PC ATA drive with a ATA to USB converter board. It's so non-proprietary that one can connect the drive via USB to a PC or Mac and the computers recognize it as an external drive. Now in regards to placement with the Xbox, just be careful not to block the vent holes.
Your standard DVD will look better but it won't look as good as a hd-dvd, think about it, if the drive made all old DVD's hi-def, why would anyone BUY HD-DVD's?
It will downgrade the resolution to the highest that your tv is capable of displaying which would be 1080i. Personally I would try to change it to 720p since some people say compared to 1080i, 720p actually looks better.
HDDDDVVVVDDDD....Jezz! Imagine some Grandma trying to ask a sales clerk for the HDDDVVVDDD version of Chicken Run. I hate even saying the word HD DVD! Blu-Ray may or may not be the future, but at least it has a better ring to it. I love all these Sega 32x add-ons for my Xbox360, not! Make an all-in-one unit, and give us HDMI out as well as true bluetooth for other devices and take the blow-dryer/heater out of my Xbox360.
HD-DVD is fantastic, I have the Standalone A1 player and the picture is amazing. Bluray is the next beta max, that was a sony product, so was UMD movies ha!
at the moment more movie studio's are going with blu ray and if you don't know what this means ill dumb it down for you. "if more studio's backup a format that format will win".
One thing I do dispute in the review is that the Xbox 360 has no problem rewinding or ff the videos from the marketplace. Actually, any more than 2x is a bit choppy and 8x or more is just rough as can be. This player might be a little more rough doing it but it is not very smooth at any speed searching through videos from the marketplace.
Microsft give its customers the choice on whether to buy the HD DVD drive or not, thereby keeping console cost's down, Sony on the other hand put in the Blu Ray player in every console thereby forcing customers to pay up to $599 or £425, even if you do not have a HDTV you are paying that price for a drive you will only use for games, when Sony could just have put games on DVD's and put a regular DVD player in the less expensive package.
Interesting. with an extra $200, you get an extra drive, extra wires, extra brick, all taking up extra space and to top it all off... a worthless movie. The ps3 still offers true-hd out of the box, i dont think we see any promises broken. Xbox fans are buying the betamax.
CD-Rom debut for ps1, DVD debut for ps2, now Blu-Ray is debuting for the ps3. Its innovation 101, and its what sony does best. Now how about you do some reasearch on who supports blu-ray and the latest studios abandoning HD-DVD for blu-ray and then make the unbiased decision oh which will lose the format war. dumbshit.

Damn, it's faster to watch on my crappy PC than on YouTube XL PS3.
Plus on PC YouTube got much better quality cause you know, PS3 is outdated (needs Flash 10).
HD-DVD and Blu-ray are awesome, but since HD-DVD didn't have region coding I would've wish HD-DVD stayed instead of BD.
Yeah yeah, I know BD is 50GB (dual), and HD-DVD is 30GB (dual).

It will be any day before Toshiba announces the death of HD-DVD.

yeah ps3 has to hold back for games it shares with the xbox thats why GTA4 is being released later it had to get rid of things for space and graphics
88449214 3 years ago
Yeah, I mean who cares? HDDVD is still a HD product, it's good enough, besides Blu-ray movies don't usually use up a lot of space, about the size of a HDDVD.
danecook321 3 years ago

LMNaji135 4 years ago
Yeah and the Xboxes with HDMI are only 1.2 complaint. At the time this was better than the first gen Toshiba players (those could not do 1080P) and it still boots quicker than most other stand alone players. You also have to remember that you must have a new surround sound receiver to process those new codecs.

i dont know if i buy this, since blu-ray is getting all the movies
Paparazzey 4 years ago
blu-ray works with a blue laser, hd-dvd doesn't. The advantages of a blue laser are apparent. 30gb tops for hd-dvd, 50gb or more for blu-ray now! it's clearly the better technology, but it is more expensive. you get what you pay for.
crazyidiot5309 4 years ago

The blu-ray is un-needed technology, and will become obsolete to HD-DVD
HD-DVD will become the standard of home entertainment.
I'm not a fanboy either. i don't own a ps3 wii or an xbox 360

well it shouldn't play xbox or 360 games because it can be used USB with a PC, and if games could be read by the drive then it would be pretty easy to script software to play xbox and 360 games on a computer

wow, it can be placed anywhere near the console!
i didnt realize!!
jonnyblaze142 4 years ago
What is of interest is inside the case is a relatively generic PC ATA drive with a ATA to USB converter board. It's so non-proprietary that one can connect the drive via USB to a PC or Mac and the computers recognize it as an external drive. Now in regards to placement with the Xbox, just be careful not to block the vent holes.

rite now there are new dvd players that upscales ur dvd's to 1080p but they are expensive
chitownruler23 5 years ago
Your standard DVD will look better but it won't look as good as a hd-dvd, think about it, if the drive made all old DVD's hi-def, why would anyone BUY HD-DVD's?
dlc06tucson 4 years ago
my hd-tv is 720p n 1080i, can it play 1080p hd-dvd's? or will it just play an hd-dvd at 720p?
lazybum23 5 years ago

Xbox 360 Rules!
TheDarkDragon14 5 years ago
One thing I do dispute in the review is that the Xbox 360 has no problem rewinding or ff the videos from the marketplace. Actually, any more than 2x is a bit choppy and 8x or more is just rough as can be. This player might be a little more rough doing it but it is not very smooth at any speed searching through videos from the marketplace.
alexmm01 5 years ago
Microsft give its customers the choice on whether to buy the HD DVD drive or not, thereby keeping console cost's down, Sony on the other hand put in the Blu Ray player in every console thereby forcing customers to pay up to $599 or £425, even if you do not have a HDTV you are paying that price for a drive you will only use for games, when Sony could just have put games on DVD's and put a regular DVD player in the less expensive package.
DaviesM 5 years ago
Interesting. with an extra $200, you get an extra drive, extra wires, extra brick, all taking up extra space and to top it all off... a worthless movie. The ps3 still offers true-hd out of the box, i dont think we see any promises broken. Xbox fans are buying the betamax.
snowey1337 5 years ago
u dumb fuck, MS doesnt force useless media types (blu ray) to ppl who dont want a new betamax lol
regime2008 5 years ago
CD-Rom debut for ps1, DVD debut for ps2, now Blu-Ray is debuting for the ps3. Its innovation 101, and its what sony does best. Now how about you do some reasearch on who supports blu-ray and the latest studios abandoning HD-DVD for blu-ray and then make the unbiased decision oh which will lose the format war. dumbshit.
