Wow the present situation of america really is scaring me. The fact that people are even declaring that they are gay and then being accepted by huge masses of people (liberals) is really sad. I understand that Liberals, Conservatives, and people with independant views have and always will have their differences. But this is an issue that everyone should agree on. Homosexuality is wrong, sickening, its against the natural process of life, and it should never be accepted by americans.

I am one of those gay high school students. I'm also always the "new kid". I've been openly gay since I found out I was gay, and honestly, I have had some problems from students and teachers. Being the new kid doesn't help that either.
The difference between me and many other people is I didn't let
myself become a victim. Many people saw that I just flat out didn't react to them, so they stopped bothering me.
I walk down the halls of my school (which is in TN) holding my boyfriend's hand. Of course we get the "FAGS!" "QUEERS!" and the such, but who cares? They are words.
No one has approached me physically...yet, but I think I'm an exception to this because I have a reputation for being a good fighter. I have never been in a fight though. I honestly think it's because I took Karate.
This school is a good idea, and as you say, it will be considered a "gay high school", but there will be straight kids there.
Let me ask you though, what do you think the straight kids will think? They will get picked on by outside kids for going to a gay school. In turn, the straight kids will take on the role of the gay kids, just not at school.

As a sissy who got beaten up, mentally and physically and emotionally, in an all boy jock prep school, I would like to say that if the adults (teachers, principals) didn't hate gays or were just petrified to even talk about it, the student bullies might not get away with so much.

Segregation doesn't solve any issues of hatred or violence. In fact it probably does more to increase the violence. You can't achieve equality based on a notion of separation. In the case of this school, I can say with about 99.99% chance that it would be the target of many malicious and cruel attacks, that wouldn't have been the case if it didn't exist.

It is possible that we miscommunicate. When I talk about morality I talk about normative written and unwritten rules of conduct and laws to adjust the population in any society to the same standard. In case of liberalism the standard is simply that any activity that negatively affects a unwilling party (usually a "third party") then the liberal moral standard is to end the possibility of that happening, usually by law.
Whatever happened to just knowing the difference between right and wrong? You can impose a law to make people behave properly in public while they go about doing as they please when they feel they are not being watched. The law does not make them more moral, just either fearful of reprisal or more crafty in carrying out their plans. You also now have to establish what proper conduct means, which could in turn be immoral itself very easily.
If you use the majority to decide what is proper, the minority is automatically wrong and will be negatively affected by design, when they are forced to either conform to another standard, hide their true selves or have their freedom denied or rpealed just by being different from the 'norm'.

Yes, I am gay, and I am not actually arguing against you. I am from Norway, and here we have little to no problems as gays have equal rights in all things societal (marriage, adoption etc) and as such are treated as equals (mostly) by the general populace. The general problem in the case of America would be that kids in highschool do not know how to defend themselves and the stress of bullying may destroy their eduction/foundation. When they are older they will be more able to defend themselves.

Chicago Public Schools are horrible! Every parent I know around my age is struggling to keep their children in private schools because the quality of education is so poor. In order to make the grade on standardized tests, they lowered the standards. Hooray for progress! Hooray for "Change"!

I walk down the halls of my school (which is in TN) holding my boyfriend's hand. Of course we get the "FAGS!" "QUEERS!" and the such, but who cares? They are words.
No one has approached me physically...yet, but I think I'm an exception to this because I have a reputation for being a good fighter. I have never been in a fight though. I honestly think it's because I took Karate.

This school is a good idea, and as you say, it will be considered a "gay high school", but there will be straight kids there.
Let me ask you though, what do you think the straight kids will think? They will get picked on by outside kids for going to a gay school. In turn, the straight kids will take on the role of the gay kids, just not at school.
Don't get me wrong. I fully support this idea, but I still have to wonder about the mentality of the straight kids at this school.

a lot of gays are unable to complete school simply because they cant handle it, i was one of them, had a breakdown.

Segregation doesn't solve any issues of hatred or violence. In fact it probably does more to increase the violence. You can't achieve equality based on a notion of separation. In the case of this school, I can say with about 99.99% chance that it would be the target of many malicious and cruel attacks, that wouldn't have been the case if it didn't exist.

No entirely true. If a certain way of expression is deemed to hateful and will certainly lead to destructive tendencies the banning of said activity leads to that way of expression being understood as illegal and damaging, IF it is explained in a functional way why this is the case.
I do agree that this is a last resort. But it has been proven; in many countries the state cannot perform murder leading the citizens to realize murder is not an option; murder rates drop dramatically.

I don't see how punishing the activity removes the underlying cause of it in the first place or completely stops the activity altogether. This is as logical as rewarding morality-it can't be done. If anything, when creating such penalties, you deepen hatred of the protected by the hateful.
In a perfect world laws would actually prevent crime and everyone would get along-we however don't live in a perfect world.
Fear of reprisal or promise of reward doesn't create morality in either case.

It is possible that we miscommunicate. When I talk about morality I talk about normative written and unwritten rules of conduct and laws to adjust the population in any society to the same standard. In case of liberalism the standard is simply that any activity that negatively affects a unwilling party (usually a "third party") then the liberal moral standard is to end the possibility of that happening, usually by law.

You can impose a law to make people behave properly in public while they go about doing as they please when they feel they are not being watched. The law does not make them more moral, just either fearful of reprisal or more crafty in carrying out their plans. You also now have to establish what proper conduct means, which could in turn be immoral itself very easily.
Who decides what proper means anyway? Majority?

Perhaps not. But not allowing jerks to beat the crap out of their peers is *exactly* what legislation is for. That has nothing to do with morality and *everything* to do with physical safety.

Sounds like segregation to me. So they're going to start separating gays and straights now? That sure goes a long way in creating tolerance everyone wants. Then with the separation is creats more of a divide in the whole gay vs straight issue. I went to a school in florida where there were plenty of gay people and no serious issues arose. That's like making a separate school for nerds, emo kids, jocks, and fat kids. Can't we all just get along? God loves us all :)

Are you sure no serious issues arose? Words damage worse than physical abuse, if it wasn't you who was abused then of course it didn't SEEM serious! As a matter of safety they should have an alternative place to go... segregation is when you have NO choice in whether you are allowed to go some place! Indeed, God loves us all... but we are talking about humans who don't love like God does!

dude, im far smarter than they are. but in every class, every hallway, it was decent. i mean i didnt learn much, and im not one of those flamer gays either. in fact im straight acting, but people wanted to go against me. i didnt care, they were in the wrong. and over time things would work themselves out
now the people who attacked me are in jail or facing drug charges, and i'm doing pretty well off.

Of course not, but if the gay kids can't can't learn in that kind of environment then ok... its a small step but at least in the right direction so we can have the ideal situation where everyone lives together and loves eachother... but thats impossible now.

Look at it socially, its separating people into groups, no one will get to know the other side, and superstitions will increase.

calling homosexuals "queers" is part of the problem. language & attitudes like that is what puts them under siege. this is NOT an issue of acceptance. it's an issue of them be allowed to education without the pending threat of persecution. somewhere down the line, when our social order leaves them alone, an adjustment must be made. but right now, giving them access to gay campus is a good move.

Yes, I am gay, and I am not actually arguing against you. I am from Norway, and here we have little to no problems as gays have equal rights in all things societal (marriage, adoption etc) and as such are treated as equals (mostly) by the general populace. The general problem in the case of America would be that kids in highschool do not know how to defend themselves and the stress of bullying may destroy their eduction/foundation. When they are older they will be more able to defend themselves.

that sounds good but there's a fundamental flaw. the school isn't a lesser school; it doesn't have less resources like the schools in brown v ed. also, you have to consider that the playing field isn't level. those are still minors & we're responsible for protecting their right to handle their studies without duress. hence you have a magnet school. eventually (& Godwilling), we'll have an enlightened society. til then, we gotta look out for our gay daughters & sons

Maybe they should throw the bigots out of school on the street. Then schools can focus on being safe havens where children can learn rather than toy chests for the intolerant and the stupid. That would benefit more than the just the gay students.

Maybe we should not. I go to a terrible ghetto school, and im open to EVERYONE in my school. Yes, ive gotten death threats and blah blah blah, but i could give a fuck, cause half those kids are scrawny kids that i would crush in a second, and all the rest are gross and fat. Staying in the closet hurts us mentally. It's not a smart thing to do.

Chicago Public Schools are horrible! Every parent I know around my age is struggling to keep their children in private schools because the quality of education is so poor. In order to make the grade on standardized tests, they lowered the standards. Hooray for progress! Hooray for "Change"!

Gay kids are not the only ones being beat-up at school and sending them to their own school will not stop someone from beating them after school.
Schools need to worry with teaching the kids how to get along together no matter color are sexual preference but the main thing is the schools need to teach kids how to make a better future for themselves. A lot of the kids coming out school now do not even basic math skills much less any idea how they are going to make a decent living for themselves.

segregation of gays seems like a very short sighted solution. what about after graduation? the bullying and possible violence won't stop after you've become an adult, and if this kind of segregation is promoted the problems homosexuals would face in their later life would become even more difficult. but something needs to be done. i know. i was deprived of happiness for years in high school because of being open about my sexuality.

that is wrong to be discriminated against if you are gay i don't know why it is so hard for people to accept there are gay people and if the bullying wouldn't even stop with the gay highschool because there are people who truly hate them and will go out of there way to victimize gays and i am for this however i would not want the gay high school to be mandatory i am straight but everyone deserves the same rights if you are human you get the same rights and same consequences
