@Ninbrain The jumping black is caused by a glitch in Minecraft.

Items "dropped" on the ground don't "pop" out of the block placed on it if that block is a half slab or glass. There could be more blocks that this applies to, but I'm not sure...

It's a kind of irritating what "design" does make people do ^^ Usually there is wooden floor and in front of fire places is stone. You're building the opposite ;)

Dan, save your fingers a bit - when you're making a big stack of stuff you can both right and left click to make more, so try pressing both at once - registers as two clicks so it's twice as fast :P
