Well said, but I hope it is no disrespect to a great musician to give him or her a stinker of a review. I play this piece on an 1825 guitar with gut and silk (i.e. historical) stringing, using the flesh to pluck as Sor required, not the nails. It sounds OK, at least on a good day, and especially when I bring out the air, which is on the top two strings. But I'm no Bream.
This is truly horrendous, and Sor, who could not bear guitarists playing with their nails, would have hated it. All the notes come out with the same weight. Bream has not thought at all about the weighting of the inner f-sharp according to whether it is the root of the dominant seventh or creating the second inversion of B minor. Sor always insisted on a guitarist thinking in a musically literate and harmonic manner. It sounds like a tin can.
@MikeyIV PS. Here is a suggestion. If you want to make someone feel small, bring them hard up against a matter of fact, not a matter of opinion. The answers to the question of who I am art (1) that you have no business to ask, since these exchanges are predicated upon anonymity, and (2) that I am someone with the right to differ from you, and if necessary every other contributor to this site, in my opinions of Bream.
@sor1952 haha alright fair enough. I was just saying that you should give the man some respect. I'd like to hear you play this piece, it must be even MORE beautiful!! ;)
@sor1952 I'm not here to argue with anyone because it is absolutely pointless to fight someone via the internet, but don't you believe that it is one's artistic right to play a piece as they imaginatively "see" and hear the piece? I've always been taught that music is a form of expression, and in my experience not everyone expresses themselves the same way, hence the number of different styles and tones used.
A piece of sublime beauty and simplicity rendered by a man who is truly capable of understanding and interpreting it both in its fullness and its nuances. I would be hard-pressed to find a guitarist in any genre whose work I enjoy more than Julian Bream's.

Actually if you're good enough to play this you should be able to get the feelings for the song by ear. I'ts quite easy and good for people who can't read sheet music yet. Well i do, and it seems to work for me.
he is a master in the guitar theres no doubt about it but at the same time with the pic at the begining he was like put there to the guitar, he looks like imprisoned in that acoustic room made to play guitar.
in the documenary "my life with music", bream said when his father left for work he used to sneak in and play his guitar until one day he got caught, and his dad insted of getting angry..he signed him up for lessons with him self so they both learned guitar from same teacher until bream got old enough to make his own decisions...I think bream was meant for the guitar :).
You should try some classical stuff, I've been playin metal (guitar/bass/vocals) for ten years + . Recently I started taking some lessons and playing classical and it has improved my playing 100% in a short period of time. I have a long way to go, but its making me a much better musician in all genres (I also play jazz/classical trumpet, which is what i've had the most training with) at any rate, good luck with whatever you do and have fun <--that is the most important thing, enjoy it!
Sadly, in Fernando Sor's time, guitar was looked down upon as an instrument for the peasants. Wasn't taken seriously. It's amazing his music can be found, as old as it is!
He is the only one who plays it that thoughtful making one think of time passing by. I think that was what he tought playing this. - Just love it and admire him.
Dear GuitarraUltima, this is not his Romanillos guitar, but an instrument Julian originally got on loan from the widow Agustin (that's right, the string maker): a 1957 Hermann Hauser II. In this day and age, when young guitarists are encouraged to demean themselves to some kind of circus acts (look how fast I can play!) Videos like these are quintessential to remind people that there exists such a thing as musical phrasing and tone production, both of which Julian is an undisputed master.
Even the idea of playing this song to be featured in video over a harder song is simply brilliant and extraordinary and it really shows that it's about the beauty of the notes and not the difficulty of the piece.
Your opionion about "young guitarists" being "circus acts" claiming, as a sidenote, their only purpose is to be fast doesn't really have a lot of arguments. It is a fact that the young are technically often lightyears ahead of the old masters of instruments such as guitar - in every technique. However, classical guitar isn't very popular these days since the use of electric guitar and picks, and thus differs.
Don't trump that the talent and skills of the young are nothing.
@Isnaard I played a cheap ibanez for two years, and had gotten ok for only two years (the little wing intro/satch boogie) and then I considered having a career in music, so I got classical guitar lessons. Years later Ive progressed nowhere near as much as I did with a pick.
Sure, you can play a lot faster with a pick, and crak the fuzz and chorus, and throw in an autowah, and that probably sounds way cooler that Sor's pieces. But the main reason why Sor went out of style is b/c its just harder.
@Isnaard You have to try and look at the comment on a way that doesn´t involve EVRERYONE, because that´s impossible. Off course there is talent out there (wathever they play), but I think he is right about most of the young people beginning to play the guitar: they only want to show off as soon as possible and do so by playing as fast as they can. I hate that.
Well, I think the generalising here isn't very fair, nor is the statement that most young people pick up a guitar just to play fast. That's a ridiculous claim, considering you don't have any information about the feelings of the people - you don't actually know what they think when they play and practise. Actually getting to know some of these "young circus acts" might open up your mind a bit...
@Isnaard If you read carefully what I said, I was NOT generalising.I said it´s impossible to talk about EVERYONE, so that leaves us with the individuals I see and hear about.I don´t know why you´re assuming I don´t know any young ´circus acts´(words that I never used btw),because I myself am only 21 and actually know plenty (even some friends). That´s why I made those statements because I HAVE the information. And my mind is very open, but that doesn´t mean I have to agree with it.
@HitokiriDiaz "but I think he is right about most of the young people beginning to play the guitar: they only want to show off as soon as possible and do so by playing as fast as they can."
Could you please explain how this is _not_ generalising?
@Isnaard Because I´m not talking about everyone, just about the exmples I have seen (plenty). If you look at the world your way, you can´t make a statement without generalising.
@HitokiriDiaz It is difficult, if not impossible, to discuss about almost anything without generalising. However, it's a different thing wether or not the generalisation is true.
You've happened to come accross young guitarists with no insight in the minimalistic essentials of the guitar - i.e. playing in time, shuffling groove, dynamic range, rhytmically and thematically sound progression. That's no reason to say what I quoted from you is true; in fact, my experience differs greatly.
Sorry, it is both the guitar (I think it is Romanillos)and the Master playing it what makes it so sweet. I agree with you though - the Master is the greater part of it. Julian Bream is a legend equal to Segovia in promoting classical guitar but better player than Maestro Segovia.
Perfectly done. Note the deftly executed right hand fingering. Most look at the left hand. His his right hand is straight out of Sor's method. Beautiful.
Of a great master we expect great interpretations. This is not different. Julian Bream is, really, one of the better guitar players of the last century.
It really makes me feel sort of sorrow. This video has a real smack of sadness, he has been one of the 3 greatest guitarists ever and now he looks old and tired. Bravo Maestro by giving so much to the guitar, I am sure that was the feeling Sor expected to express.
It's the music which has been used during the end credit of "Tree of Life"... thanks for sharing it! :)

Wow, i don't like this version!! looks like a robot!
This piece is pretty easy to play because all the work should be focused on the interpretation, and here there is absolutely no feeling!

Close your eyes and listen to it. Feelings are transmitted through the sound of the guitar not the facial expressions or movements of the guitarist.

So emotional, and Bream playing, that is the taste of music.

Perfectly done. Note the deftly executed right hand fingering. Most look at the left hand. His his right hand is straight out of Sor's method. Beautiful.

A simple, sad and beautifull study of the greatest composer for guitar. Thank you Master Fernando Sor, for your creations.

Of a great master we expect great interpretations. This is not different. Julian Bream is, really, one of the better guitar players of the last century.
Very good.

It really makes me feel sort of sorrow. This video has a real smack of sadness, he has been one of the 3 greatest guitarists ever and now he looks old and tired. Bravo Maestro by giving so much to the guitar, I am sure that was the feeling Sor expected to express.
