@TheWonderfulWombat I'm a Bush supporter and still love Tom Paxton's music. Now, where is Tom's song in response to Barack Obama's surge in Afghanistan?
- :-) Nope, I don't label you stupid, unless you count yourself among the: "Indoctrinated, dumbfounded Americans killing, being killed and drowning themselves in debt... in order to make the rich richer."
- War is and always was a racket. Vietnam was that, like Iraq and Afghanistan is, and the looting of natural resources is the warmongers ultimate reward.
- That's the message in Paxton's lyrics too, where he tries to wake people up to the reality of the atrocities being carried out.
@brandulph: Tell me, what natural resources did we get from Nam, Iraq, and Afghanistan? We surely didn't get oil from any of those: they're not even our oil trading partners.
Better or no better... the message is the same. And as for comparing Vietnam with Iraq, dude... but of course you can. It's the same thing over again. Vietnam was about the enormous off-shore oil reserves along the south east coast.
In Vietnam like in Iraq, the economical hit-man failed, the jackal failed and the army moved in. Indoctrinated, dumbfounded Americans killing, being killed and drowning themselves in debt... in order to make the rich richer. Stupid!
@brandulph You're calling me stupid with reasoning like that? No one gave a fuck about oil off the coast of Vietnam, you probably believe Americans never visited the moon too. Why don't you move to Moron, Mongolia?

Years ago, liberal Democrats wanted the US out of Vietnam. They finally got their wish when the media turned the American people against the war, even though conservative patriots warned of a blood bath if we should withdraw from Vietnam. By the time South Vietnam fell, we had only a token military force at our embassy. What followed was horrible. The communists killed 3 million of its own citizens. Some were killed because they WORE GLASSES! I hate liberal Democrats.
If you're talking about Vietnam then they were justified. We attacked them, we shot, bombed and burned millions of their people, we were invaders. You can't honestly say you don't understand their want to fight back? I'm more concerned about the victims, not the victimizers and the muderers.

Maybe by the end of the 100 years we'll have found the WMD and the evidence connecting the Huessein regime to 9/11. I'm willing to give up a few thousand more American lives to achieve that glorious victory.
And of course you would be willing to lay down your life wouldn't you?
Whatever is said, the Iraquis must have a bloody good hiding place for those WMD. There're 100,000 troops out there and they haven't found them. Perhaps they need their mothers out there going "you're not looking properly"
Hey why not have a look on google earth and see if you can't find a few big missile shaped cupboards.
You're a fine example of the way the the US today educates its citizens! Docile! Gullible!
elfuegoheat, your insane their NEVER was a connection between Saddam & Al Qaeda, the evidence is clear. You may be willing to let more service members die needlessly, any good American knows that we shouldn't let our great service members die when they don't need to. I also find it disgusting that it's so easy for you to talk about those Americans that will die but I have friends who serve in the 10th Marine Reg.&101st Airborne& I know I want to see them again some day& hopefully not in a box.
Support our troops: impeach Bush! Why wait 'til November when we can save hundreds, no, thousands of lives right now? He's committed high treason, and killed four thousand of us, but has not brought the mastermind of the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11th. Why is he still here? Send the Crusader back to the Dark Ages where he belongs!
Wow, you don't care about Iraqis to capitalize the noun, or even do them to common courtesy of correctly spelling their name. You didn't capitalize any of you sentences, nor place spaces between them. If you could think of more than three sentences, you would have done it again! Didn't your teachers tell you to capitalize "I?" Good job with the "who's" contraction, my cat can do that, too. I would correct more, but there aren't enough characters to adequately describe you low intelligence.
cheaper gas? 20 bucks a barrel before the war, 120 bucks now? yeah that cheaper gas sure is nice... much ore to it, but since that was the argument...
Spent the end of '67 and most of '68 as an infantryman in I Corps South Vietnam. At that time Tom wrote Lyndon Johnson told the nation. After buying his comprehensive/historical songbook, I had hoped he would update to Iraq (my son will be there in April 08). This is a gift from a most talented songmeister. Up with Tom - to hell with BushCo and Cheney.
YOU ARE AN IDIOT. you think tom paxton would agree with you calling iraqi's "fucking brown islamic bastards"? this isn't about how sad it is that an american would die for a 'brown' or korean person, this is about how ridiculous the war is. tom spent his whole life writing songs with the intent of erasing the hatred that bigots and racists like you harbor. don't listen to this music, you're not good enough for it.
Are you serious? It's our fault we're over there..... You're probably one of those people that still think Iraq attacked the Twin Towers and we went after them...
When 9/11 happened and they wanted to invade Afghanistan I could understand that, because they had the training camps etc. But I have never seen a valid reason for invading Iraq. True, Saddam was an unpleasant ruler by "Western democratic" standards but what gives us the right to assume that our way of life is the right way?. If we wanted to get rid of Saddam, we should have done it 15-20 odd years ago when he was invading Kuwait and gassing Kurdish villages, not as part of a general Crusade.
George W has been so pathetic as President especially with this ridiculous war that he makes L.B.J. look like a saint and Vietnam look like a very tiny skirmish that took place in history.
saw tom live last tuesday in manchester. this was his second song in his set. he described bushes surge to victory as "a surge is something that blows up your computer. so how is this supposed to be a good thing, george?". i got 2 autographs and a photo with him. he was just amazing. I advise anyone who hasnt heard it, to listen to 'the bravest' about 9/11. i nearly cried when he performed it. long live Tom!!
You're right! He just changed some of the words. "I got a letter from LBJ that says this is your lucky day, it's time to put your khaki trousers on." Funny thing is, I just mentioned that to my dad who remembered the song right away and said, "Yeah, I got one of those letters from LBJ!"
carol and others here might also like an updated version of the vietnam song fixing to die by joe 'country'mcdonald now done by martin plant. if u put all 3 in search u can find it.
nice one RedCeltic - you have such eclectic taste, never know what i'm gonna find next - but its always excellent.
same here;) i like this song and the images really help get the message across about bush's neo-colonism/imperialism, and shows some of his 'best' lies or euphanisms-surge=escalation. Not sure, but seems U.S. have been at war non-stop since WW2-if not officially, by proxy -i.e. zionist Israel, or funding, training.etc right wing militias, often again elected govt's, or sometimes by fighting alongside - e.g. marines laying bombs in harbour - i think Nicaragua?
This the role Tom has always chosen, folk music ,the music of dissent and long may it continue.

Putting your hope in Obama is a sad fate. He may end Iraq, but he has his sights on Iran. "Humanitarian aid" - yeah, a lotta good we do.
boethius27 3 years ago 4
3 weeks later, Bush has invaded Iran.
And McCain promises that his administration will be
"the third Bush term."
shas1814 3 years ago 2
he'll end iraq. he'll start iran.
cheers.
feeknocks 3 years ago 12
Too late.
And it wasn't Obama who did it.
shas1814 3 years ago
why have we not invaded Saudi Arabia? they trained and gave money to the terrorists. Oops , forgot they are friends of American oil companies so they can be forgiven for their part in the death of over 4,000.

Well - I guess he did! Thanks Eddie for the clip. I love this song too.

Maybe by the end of the 100 years we'll have found the WMD and the evidence connecting the Huessein regime to 9/11. I'm willing to give up a few thousand more American lives to achieve that glorious victory.

You do know McCain's idea is to keep troops stationed there, not to keep the war going on for a century, right?
jtull89 3 years ago
so, they won't be attacked?
headachehaver 3 years ago
And of course you would be willing to lay down your life wouldn't you?
Whatever is said, the Iraquis must have a bloody good hiding place for those WMD. There're 100,000 troops out there and they haven't found them. Perhaps they need their mothers out there going "you're not looking properly"
Hey why not have a look on google earth and see if you can't find a few big missile shaped cupboards.
You're a fine example of the way the the US today educates its citizens! Docile! Gullible!

Pardon me, I asked elfuegoheat a simple question.
jtull89 3 years ago
elfuegoheat, your insane their NEVER was a connection between Saddam & Al Qaeda, the evidence is clear.

Send the Crusader back to the Dark Ages where he belongs!

yeah, that's all well and good, but i need cheaper gas!there are billions of iranians and iraquis and whatever.who's more important them or us?
garzaeduardo 3 years ago
Wow, you don't care about Iraqis to capitalize the noun, or even do them to common courtesy of correctly spelling their name. You didn't capitalize any of you sentences, nor place spaces between them. If you could think of more than three sentences, you would have done it again! Didn't your teachers tell you to capitalize "I?" Good job with the "who's" contraction, my cat can do that, too. I would correct more, but there aren't enough characters to adequately describe you low intelligence.
UltimaMind 3 years ago 3
cheaper gas? 20 bucks a barrel before the war, 120 bucks now? yeah that cheaper gas sure is nice... much ore to it, but since that was the argument...

Spent the end of '67 and most of '68 as an infantryman in I Corps South Vietnam. At that time Tom wrote Lyndon Johnson told the nation. After buying his comprehensive/historical songbook, I had hoped he would update to Iraq (my son will be there in April 08). This is a gift from a most talented songmeister. Up with Tom - to hell with BushCo and Cheney.

good song americans are dying for fucking brown islamic bastards same as vietnam, korea, yugoslavia and every other funcking country us invaded
MarkoCCCC25 4 years ago

George W has been so pathetic as President especially with this ridiculous war that he makes L.B.J. look like a saint and Vietnam look like a very tiny skirmish that took place in history.

isn't that just amazing and a fucking shame.
we the people must arise and UNELECT the current administration. why do so many think this can wait for the November elections?
peacefully we must surround them.
april 15, 2008 is the GreatAmericanStrike.

saw tom live last tuesday in manchester. this was his second song in his set. he described bushes surge to victory as "a surge is something that blows up your computer. so how is this supposed to be a good thing, george?". i got 2 autographs and a photo with him. he was just amazing. I advise anyone who hasnt heard it, to listen to 'the bravest' about 9/11. i nearly cried when he performed it. long live Tom!!

I wish a singer would re-do Pete Seegar's "Bring 'Em Home". Look up the original on youtube.
Roy Zimmerman has a song "Chickenhawks" which answers the question "Why did the chicken cross the road?"

This is a great re-working of Paxton's earlier condemnation of US foreign policy, then Vitnam, now Iraq. His lyrics are as good as ever.

Great ! I remember the same melody and similar lyrics when he recorded "Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation" during the Vietnam years.

Well, you've got me there Carol. I had no idea this was a remake of an older song.
RedCeltic 4 years ago
You'll find it on Limewire - "Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation" - different so-called war.
carolhague 4 years ago
