@golfdude2007 Actually there were a couple of teams in 1969 that might have beaten either of these teams. One was Penn State, which had a tremendous defense, and the other was USC, which was 10-0-1 and also had a swift and talented defense.
Classic game. The TV ratings and fan interest for this one set the standard for all the classic games we've witnessed since.
But check out James Street trying to give away the ball after scoring his touchdown...nobody wants anything to do with it. Finally he just hands it to #24 on the Arkansas team! Imagine getting away with that nowadays without a brawl spilling out all over the stadium. "He disrespected me!!"
According to Wikipedia the game drew a 52.1 rating which means more than half of all the TV sets in the country had tuned in to at least part of the game! Huge!

But one thing is for DAMN sure. Without Texas talent Arkansas could not have beaten Fayetville High School.
Don Breaux, Arkansas' offensive coordinator, screwed this one up big time. Arkansas could have kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter to go up 17-8, but he wanted to pass instead, hoping for a touchdown. Silly. Really silly. Take the points. Texas was not going to score twice in less than eight minutes that day.
Texas was certainly the best team that year, but Nixon's proclamation despite Penn State (with Franco Harris, Lydell Mitchel and Jack Ham) going undefeated to that point proved that there needed to be a playoff...wait, haven't we heard that argument recently, too?
What a great college football game!!! Truly a classic!!!! I wish ESPN Classic would show the entire game sometime!!!! I didn't want Texas to win but both teams were outstanding and Texas showed their mettle by coming from 14-0 down to win on the road
@findinggracy Street was a Cheat! In October 1969, Street dropped ALL HIS CLASSES due to the pressure he was under as quarterback of the top-ranked Longhorns. The problem was, he was no longer a student at UT, and no longer eligible to play varsity football!! And people are complaining about Reggie Bush? The Southwest Conference began its decline here, with many other scandals to follow!!! It was fitting that Richard Nixon attended this game!!!!
Hey okla 1982,,,,we enjoy being hated by you dirt burglars. You know why it says "Oklahoma is OK" on the license plates? Because mediocre wouldn't fit. What does a tornado and a divorce in Oklahoma have in common....somebody is going to lose their trailer. Why doesn't Texas float off into the gulf of Mexico....because Oklahoma Sucks.
cracks me up to hear hogs complain about the officiating and losing the game. Here are some other realities that include officiating. John Rees was clearly out of bounds on Arkansas' first TD drive, and that would have led to no more than a FG. Second, Ark was the benefactor of six UT turnovers to two. Third, the game was played in your home turf.
Despite all of these factors and facing a 14-0 deficit in a very hostile environment, Texas came back to win the game and outgained the Hogs also
i still don't understand how all those points make up for the clipping play on the last run that was the game winning td....so because we had more turn overs, its ok that they got a clip that sealed the win? i'm not saying texas doesn't have a gripe about the out of bounds play, but that clip is noteworthy. it's also noteworthy that no matter if we were at home or away, the refs were always from texas....we were the only non-texas school--not a complete home field advantage
@apm54 yes it was a great game, regardless of who won (naturally, I feel all the better about it because we did, but the '64 and '65 classics were great, too, and Arkansas won both).
But there is little doubt in my mind that Texas played poorly in spots, but still managed to make the key plays and Ark didn't. Now, Arkansas certainly played a role in Texas' mistakes, but not all of them by any means.
@Speyrer88 I do agree that Texas deserved this win, I also cant wait until the next time Texas and Arkansas play, and i think you guys will not be down for long like you were this year.
@Speyrer88 Mike Boschetti was clearly clipped on Streets run but missed tackles let him get loose in the first place. Idiotic Mervin Johnson calling a pass play when a McLard FG would have sealed it but Montgomery underthrows Dicus for a pick. Nixon,Bush, Tower ,Rockefeller,Billy Graham, Colonel Sanders, #1 vs #2 Natnl TV ,last game of the turbulent 60's(two all white teams no less)....this game will always be a thorn in all hogfans side that can remember it. CRAP !
I never whined about the clipping call... Texas won, fair and square, as painful as it was for Arkansas fans. Officiating shouldn't be an issue when your opponents turn the ball over six times. Hog fans often forget the long pass to RP was called on FOURTH and TWO. That took some real nerve on the part of DKR. If you want to attach a memory to this game, I suggest we remember Fred Steinmark and how several Arkansas players became very close friends with him in the last days of his life.
Refs didn't beat Hogs. Mervin Johnson(Arks Off Coord.did) calling for pass when a Bill McClard FG would have put HOGS up by 17-8 but Montgomery's underthrown ball was int'd in the endzone. Texas turns the ball over 6 times and we only get 14 points. But Boschetti clearly got clipped and the ref was right there. Still painful
JABLES....that block is only legal within 2 yards of the LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, sir...you can dive at the back of linemen's legs within a yard or two of the line of scrimmage and ONLY there or its classified as a clip....this happened some 10 yards or so down the field...and the ref is standing right there...typical,however
Texas won by coming from behind against a great team at their field. Like President Nixon said, they deserved to be National Champions and that's what they were. Hook Em Horns!
check out the UNCALLED OBVIOUS as a KNOT ON YOUR NOSE CLIP in the BACK at the 1:02 mark at the 29 yard line on the James Street run....so typical, Arkansas had to battle 6 refs from the state of Texas in every SWC game they played...if that's not a clip, there's no such thing
1) it was at the legs, not the back. 2) it was closer to a trip than a clip. 3) the actual terms "tripping" and "clipping" didn't exist in the same context as they do today, and that CERTAINLY would not have been called given the ambiguity of the block and the position of the player (behind as opposed to in position to make a tackle). I like your ultimatum though, as far as argument goes, it's not a particularly accurate statement, but it certainly serves its purpose to discredit refutation.
Yup - that's a very obvious clip. Texas got a couple of calls that proved to be critical in their Cotton Bowl match vs Notre Dame as well. In saying this I am taking away NOTHING from the Long Horns or their coaches. It's the refs that were the problem.
I was 16 at the time, we had to listen to the game on a car radio the Austin ABC channel was the only one carrying it and we didn't get it. We only had 3 channels back then. no Direct TV.
I remember the 4th down and Street breaking lose but I thought it was over with the 4th down pass play. What an ending ! My dad and I yelled and celebrated for 15 minutes.
Bill Montgomery was on TV decades later talking about how it ruined a lot of lives for Arkansas players. Too damn bad.
Darrell Royal had balls. How many coaches nowadays would have the nerve to go for two with that much time left and still behind?
Also, notice that back then there was no such thing as the victory formation (taking a knee) as time ran out. He went under center and waited for the clock to run out. Today, they start walking off with 20 seconds left if they know it's the last play.
Nope. This was the last major game between two all-white teams.
If you want to read a fascinating history of this game and the politics behind it, I highly recommend Terry Frei's book "Horns, Hogs, and Nixon Coming: Texas vs. Arkansas in Dixie's Last Stand".
@ericcollins81 There were no black players for either team. A player named Jon Richardson,( if my memory is correct ) was the first black player for Arkansas in 1970.
I saw this game when I was a kid on a black and white television. ( we couldn't afford a color one).
Bill Montgomery was amazing and somehow Texas was able to fight back. Being a Texas fan, I was depressed through most of the game. The ending was like a story and Texas was victorious.
Vince Young brought his own magic to a game that has evolved to a skill level that is difficult to ascertain. To think or trust your instincts could mean the difference between success or failure.
I'm not a Texas fan but for the record: James Street never got the proper kudos he deserved. He was a true winner and led the Horns to the top in the NCAA.
No clipping. Got his shoulder even. What I loved was Cliff Powell (64) standing like stone when Bertelsen pounded over right in front of him. Hogs got favorable ball spots all day long.
WHAT ? 1:36 # 53 Mike Boschetti got clipped. Plain & simple.
Run Maxwell & Burnett up the Middle let Mcclard kick FG Ark wins. Screw Mervin Johnson for calling pass play that gets int'd in EZone and returned 20 + yds
Dr Hog, I'm gonna guess you think the Montgomery pass to Reiss(spelling?) that set up a Hogs TD in the first quarter was actually in bounds, right? That was the biggest joke call of the game.
BIGTIME CLIP right in front of the crooked texass ref's eyeballs on street's run, so typical of those punks back at that time. You had to beat teass and their boys in stripes to win.
So, you actually think that the refs called the game? You've got to be kidding me. Get over it, TEXAS owns the hogs, owned the SWC, and owned the CottonBowl. Sounds like another UofA fan who only wishes that their fball program could be just as historical and superior. Hook'em!!
hey Notre Dame fans.....this is how yo uwin a BIG game.....4th and long...and you go for the big paly....you dont sit on it like Ara did vs MSU and settle for a tie!!LOL!
As much as I hate Texas, and I do....The whole state!! That 4th and 3 1/2 play was the best call I have ever seen in college football history. They were a running team and ran a post to the short side of the feild. Remember, they had the ball on the far left hash. I do not have to like Texas to say that was a hell of a play. That was an excellent call and even better excution!!! So I hope I do not offend Texas fans, it was a great call on a great team on the road!!
Dear OKla1982. you're just jealous because the Okies didn't come up with the wishbone, they had to copy Texas. But I do have to say that Okla does have the best team MONEY can buy. Most of the OKLa players down through the years have been from TEXAS.
@okla1982 don't be hatin, sawgrass... Texas is the only thing standing between OK and an onslaught of illegal immigrants. While they have relatively good football teams, I have the feeling that there's one thing that's going to be chanted at the championship game... BOOMER SOONER!
That move by Nixon pissed Joe Paterno off because Penn State was undefeated at the time and finished undefeated a month later after defeating Missouri in the Orange Bowl. In fairness to Texas,Penn State did not play that tough a schedule as Texas. Penn State did not start playing tougher national teams until the mid 1970's At the height of Watergate Joe Pa joked "How can a guy who knows so much about college football no so little about Watergate"
It was a screw job, Penn State personally got snow balled a few times. Hey that's life. Useless fact I think George H.W. Bush attended this game as well.
I disagree. Both Texas and Ohio State played tougher schedules then Penn State so Penn State didn'r deserve it.I'm from Pennsylvania and I'm objective Like I said PennState didn't rally start playing a tougher schedule until the mid 70's. In 94 they screwed themselves not joining the coaltion or should I say the Big(overated) Ten.
various Texas players...lined up,in a drill formation on the end zone line and took turns dashing to the back of the other end
line of the end zone, benting down, toucheing the end line and dashing back....to show the Nation what TEXAS football was about and that they still had plenty of energy even AFTER the game.....it was an awesome showing of durablity and conditioning.....its was quite impressive.....I never forget that and the game itself.
Howdy and Hook-Em-Horns Huskeral2008! I really do thank you for sharing that memory of that classic game, The "Game of the Century". My brother had seen your question and asked me to respond w/ what did happen. His daughter graduated from UT last spring and we have always been big fans. My brother has a autograph poster of that game signed by the Quarterback #16 James Street and the Tight-end Randy Peschel #40, who caught the 4th down pass.
I got a Orange and White pottery shield of UT signed by those two. Way Cool. And the Last Daily Texan of that year's season.
Vince and the 05 team were better but they did not have the grit that the 69 team had. Only a few on that team went to the pros (2 from offense and one or 2 from defense) and compared to the 05 team which put nearly all the starting 22 plus some second teamers in the pros
Look at the clown from the cheerleading squad doing cartwheels on the field between 2:45 and 2:47. One of the Arkansas linebackers should have knocked him on his ass. You don't let someone do that on your home turf.
Hey TEXASBLOWJOBBOY46, not only was 1969 Texas #5 in 1969 but #5 in 1970, when a much better Notre Dame team kicked those inbred, trailor park living, Jerry Springer watching, white trash hillbilly boys asses 24-11. cracks me up to hear hogs complain about the officiating and losing the game. Here are some other realities that include officiating. John Rees was clearly out of bounds on Arkansas' first TD drive, and that would have led to no more than a FG. Second, Ark was the benefactor of six UT turnovers to two. Third, the game was played in your home turf.
Despite all of these factors and facing a 14-0 deficit in a very hostile environment, Texas came back to win the game and outgained the Hogs also
Speyrer88 1 year ago 5
@Speyrer88 How many hog fans do you hear complain about this i just hear what a great game it was
Hogsfanful 1 year ago
@Speyrer88
i still don't understand how all those points make up for the clipping play on the last run that was the game winning td....so because we had more turn overs, its ok that they got a clip that sealed the win? i'm not saying texas doesn't have a gripe about the out of bounds play, but that clip is noteworthy. it's also noteworthy that no matter if we were at home or away, the refs were always from texas....we were the only non-texas school--not a complete home field advantage
hooperX101 1 year ago
@Speyrer88 You cant say you gave us 6 turnovers, thats mistakes made by your team. It was a great game.
apm54 11 months ago
@apm54 yes it was a great game, regardless of who won (naturally, I feel all the better about it because we did, but the '64 and '65 classics were great, too, and Arkansas won both).
But there is little doubt in my mind that Texas played poorly in spots, but still managed to make the key plays and Ark didn't. Now, Arkansas certainly played a role in Texas' mistakes, but not all of them by any means.
Speyrer88 11 months ago
@Speyrer88 I do agree that Texas deserved this win, I also cant wait until the next time Texas and Arkansas play, and i think you guys will not be down for long like you were this year.
apm54 11 months ago
@Speyrer88 Mike Boschetti was clearly clipped on Streets run but missed tackles let him get loose in the first place. Idiotic Mervin Johnson calling a pass play when a McLard FG would have sealed it but Montgomery underthrows Dicus for a pick. Nixon,Bush, Tower ,Rockefeller,Billy Graham, Colonel Sanders, #1 vs #2 Natnl TV ,last game of the turbulent 60's(two all white teams no less)....this game will always be a thorn in all hogfans side that can remember it. CRAP !
DrHogfan 5 months ago

JABLES....that block is only legal within 2 yards of the LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, sir...you can dive at the back of linemen's legs within a yard or two of the line of scrimmage and ONLY there or its classified as a clip....this happened some 10 yards or so down the field...and the ref is standing right there...typical,however
Iwastherein1969 2 years ago
Wow, that's one hot chick in the Texas band from 2:23 to 3:05. I know she's in her 60's now, but damn was she hot.

Texas won by coming from behind against a great team at their field. Like President Nixon said, they deserved to be National Champions and that's what they were. Hook Em Horns!
eichmare 2 years ago
check out the UNCALLED OBVIOUS as a KNOT ON YOUR NOSE CLIP in the BACK at the 1:02 mark at the 29 yard line on the James Street run....so typical, Arkansas had to battle 6 refs from the state of Texas in every SWC game they played...if that's not a clip, there's no such thing
Iwastherein1969 2 years ago 2
1) it was at the legs, not the back. 2) it was closer to a trip than a clip. 3) the actual terms "tripping" and "clipping" didn't exist in the same context as they do today, and that CERTAINLY would not have been called given the ambiguity of the block and the position of the player (behind as opposed to in position to make a tackle). I like your ultimatum though, as far as argument goes, it's not a particularly accurate statement, but it certainly serves its purpose to discredit refutation.
jables2309 2 years ago
are you seriously gonna bitch about sumthing that happened 40 years ago?
johnnyreb1025 2 years ago 2
@Iwastherein1969

Arkansas in Dixie's Last Stand".
mdumas43073 2 years ago 3

I love the game.

WHAT ? 1:36 # 53 Mike Boschetti got clipped. Plain & simple.

Dr Hog, I'm gonna guess you think the Montgomery pass to Reiss(spelling?) that set up a Hogs TD in the first quarter was actually in bounds, right? That was the biggest joke call of the game.

SFFOOL76 2 years ago

Aviewoftime 3 years ago
I got a Orange and White pottery shield of UT signed by those two. Way Cool. And the Last Daily Texan of that year's season.
Vince and the 05 team were better but they did not have the grit that the 69 team had. Only a few on that team went to the pros (2 from offense and one or 2 from defense) and compared to the 05 team which put nearly all the starting 22 plus some second teamers in the pros
