I do this but put the onions in a little bowl of really cold water and then salt (alot). It helps drawing out the kick of the onion flavor. And when it's time to put in in the salad, I just pour out the water. =)

How about you just save those red onions for garnish. Reds just are awful to eat. And you don't want to grill them. They turn a sickly grey. Stick to Bermudas and vidalia sweets, and you don't have to kill the flavour with salt.

kosher salt. it's a type of salt. guess what...more types of salt then your crappy stuff that comes in your shaker. Explore salt types...it can make a BIG difference in your food.
