Just one correction: the tuatara is not a lizard, it's in an order of its own. Reptiles are made up of 4 extant orders: Chelonia (turtles and tortoises), Crocodylia (crocs and gators), Squamata (snakes and lizards) and Sphenodontia (or Rhyncocephalia: only the two species of tuataras)... So... tuataras are as much lizards as they are turtles or crocs...
Yes, Alex but many non-herp subcribers have trouble with basic taxonomy, so I just left it as a lizard. Just like the more vipers are in a taxon of their own, bet to leave some of the finer point out of the conversation.
very cool need to make my way by there next time. Houston went down on reptiles threw the years. ok but not great. maybe with the new exhibits the reptile will go up again.
beautiful viper's I have seen. this one was beautiful bright green. Do you have one in your collection? i wish I could tour the inside of the Klauber House. Thanks for sharing this video. Very cool.
Very cool treat to be able to see another zoo's reptiles. It's cool to see species native to Texas and the Southwest. I've been going to the Klauber House here at the San Diego Zoo over 30 years and maybe I get spoiled but there are a lot of animals I would like to see but either they don't have them or not on display. Our crocodilians here have always been pretty non-existent. I was going to ask you about the Jerdon's viper. S.D. Zoo recently put one on display and it was one of the most
I am curious, seeing all that antivenin, do they stock it for others in the area too or why do they have so many boxes? Surely it expires? It generally doesn't take dozens of boxes/vials for one bite does it?
As always, thanks for your lovely and informative videos.
No, they don't stock it for others. Yes, it can take quite a few vials sometimes depending on the snake doing the biting. Some of those maybe expired, it's still good, just expired.
perenties are one of the largest lizards but croc monitors and water monitors are still larger then them. obviously the komodo being the largest as you stated.
Perentie monitor is not the second largest monitor they are the fourth its komodo , croc monitor , water monitor then the parentie also like others said thats a burmese python not a retic
From what I know, tuatras are not lizards... they are a different type of reptile, along with Squamata, the chelonians, and crocodillians. (and those worm lizard thingys)
Where do people get those tree skinks and tentacled snakes? I loved those.
Al...Also, Those Nile Crocs IMO were a little dangerous. You were filming right over them, They could've quite easily owned you if they fealt like it. - I am a little concerned for that enclosure...John meantioned the music....which has also risen concerns....However the reptiles do look well looked after....Room for improvement is in need though, being a Zoo they should know better.
Don't be an "arm chair general" mate...since you haven't done any of it, you should be listening & learning not being critical. When you at least have 10 years of Zoo reptile husbantry, then you can be critical.
I have been trying to read asmuch as I can. - I want to get asmuch knowledge and experience as possible under my belt before I move onto the more complex styles of keeping such as Venomous snakes.
I just feel that the music was a little lame, and could do more harm then good....We'll leave the Croc enclosure bit alone, as you are indeed correct....I should keep quiet.
@MintyModF1 I agree the music is lame but the curator answers to somebody, they are not herpers but more interested in keeping guests entertained. Lot's and lots of politics involved.
I wish I could raise crocs. I'd like to raise American crocodiles if only because they're threatened right now(right?) and I think it'd be neat to be that crazy old lady with the croc pond. One day I tell myself, ONE DAAAAAY! ...and yes, I really do mean it when I say I'd like to be a crazy old lady known for the crocodile in her back pond.
You could really start quite a story tha t way...That old lady with the croc pond used to catch kids from the neiboorhood and feed them to hir crocs...lol
I'm probably one of the few young adults out there who're just WAITING until they're old enough to be grouped into the "crazy-old-bat" category. ^_^ I have it all planned out. I want to get one as soon as possible so that by the time I'm old it'll be nice and HUGE! (I also happen to live at the end of a dead-end street outside the city limits next to a big farm, so the creepy factor is upped a little! xD
After a while reading up on Crofab and Bioclon (The two Polyvalent serums used in treating Crotalus bites etc) - have came to the conclusion that Crofab, is indeed a very poorly designed serum (agreeing with Al) in the sense that it's full of un-necesary crap, subsequently all of this unnesecary crap is the main cause of allergic reactions to the serum. Bioclon is a much safer serum, and it has been cleaned to a greater level then Crofab....And it's a little cheaper! Bioclon for the win IMO.
As I said before mate....You don't have a biochemistry & immunology degrees and the industry experience....How can you judge what's crap and what's not.
Al, are the two snakes under the containers at the end, Lachesis muta muta's ? If so is this where you took the bushmaster you had ? I know you had said it was for a breeding program and I didn't know this was the breeding program you were working on or not.Great video of some truely unique reptiles, thanks for sharing it with us. Cheers, ~Lee P.S I bet you enjoyed getting into some warmer weather out in Texas, I still have snow on the ground at my place in Georgia.
Nice to see the Dallas Zoo again, as I have not been there in many years.
I agree with heart4herps about the awful music playing in the alligator exhibit. I sure would not expose animals that can hear (human or reptilian) to something like that.
Sure hope that is not a new trend at zoos, as it lends too much of a carnival atmosphere.
On the other hand, the frog chirps, and other natural sounds, could work well, but even they seemed too loud.
