Mr. Prolite- A deep thank you for this vid. I will be showing it to my daughter who is just learning how to skate. Where was this in the 1980s when I was learning? My first high speed 'test stop' ended with me lying on the ice, staring at the clear night sky in -10 temp until I could ignore the agony of popping my knee 'sideways', and crawled back into the house with my mother asking the usual now what.... my daughter will understand this vid easily so thanks again...
i have been trying for years to learn on my own either i spin and lose body control or i put too much pressure on my sliding foot then i feel my ankles going to break.
I have problems doing this on artistic ice skates. I don't know why. When i had the usual skates it was no problem. How should i do it for artistic ones?
@Prolite yes ..figure skates. The top is with some dents ..(i think thats how they are called) ..and the back is longer. I usually get stuck in the dents while doing this ...so my only way to stop is to put one foot backawrds in a T position and brake slowly. Or to transform the straight movement into one of rotation.
@nw408elixir That's the downside of using figure skates. You can however stop regularly in figure skates, you just need to lean more towards the center of your blade.
i went ice skating today.it was crazy fun!!!but the only thing i cant do was stopping and turning :( i got better at it now expect stopping and turning
this is diferent then what i have been practicing. i can do a tstop without lifting my back leg so i can stop. but having trouble lifting my front leg up cause my momentom rocks me forward into the ice. anywho ill give this stop a go and once i got it masted ill be better then my sis. lol thx for the vid mate :D
@Prolite It was the best TV show of its day. That and Columbo.. Oh and The A-Team aaannndd... MacGyver... Oh and Airwolf... Manimal, and Dallas... Maaannn, they just don't make shows like they used to. 80s was the best decade!!
@Prolite Completely agree with you my friend!! 80s most definitely all the way!!
Thank you very much for all the lessons you've put up. I sincerely hope your extreme ice skating thing takes off. It would be cool if you can come to Dubai at some stage and show us a move or two. I'm still learning but some of my Emirati friends have got something called "The Emirati Dance". It's awesome.
@Prolite The intro's nearly as long as the lesson but you know what? That was the best intro in all of YouTube. If only others took the time and effort to make awesome intros like yours then I'd be a happy guy.
Just wanted to say this is one of the best how to videos I've seen for Hockey stop, I tried them last night after watching this video and sure enough it worked! Thanks again :)
No, the Double Spray is a two-footed spray and you therefore have to distribute your weight accordingly. In a basic stop such as the one shown in this video, you're only stopping with one foot, so the weight should be mainly in the back (when you're first learning). As you get better, you'll have to lean more weight on the front foot. To spray really high, you'll have to put most of your weight on the front foot, but that's only if you can already stop really well.
i am just starting out i can stop on my right foot but not with my other is there another way i can learn to get strong with my left ( by the way im from australia )
The way I learned is to teach myself the other side. I would suggest you get better at stopping on the side which you are comfortable, and slowly begin to teach yourself the other side.
Yes, almost exactly like in skiing. But it's harder to learn to stop in ice-skating if you're crossing over from skiing, whereas it's easier if you can already ice-skating and learning how to stop in skiing. Same principles though, but you have to push with your feet, not just throw your hips sideways.
Go slower. Lean more on your rear foot and less weight on your front foot. Push forward more with your front foot. Put your arms in a straight line from front to back. Keep your eyes forward. Don't lean over, but do bend your knees more.
@Prolite i went ice skating few hours ago, it was my first time and i did goodjob ...and after watching this video it makes me want to dominate the ice! so yah cheers! im exited going back tomorrow
This video will defenitely help me. I just moved up north and took it upon myself to learn hockey -this evening was my first time on ice and stopping on rollerblades and stopping on ice are completely unrelated!
Sup Perceval, I see your still here on the tube. I was wondering since I am still working on hockey stops. What hollow should I get when I get my skates sharpen that would allow me to slide and stop easier? I know 1/2 is the standard but what would be a good beginners edge. I can tell when my blades duller its easier for me to learn.
also make sure you are stopping with the balls of your feet, not your heels. if your weight is on your heels, the skate will dig in, but if you're almost on your toes , you will slide ...
i always find my skates cutting into the ice as soon as my hips turn on the stop causing me to almost fall....are my skates to tight? i feel like i should slide a little just but turning my skates and then stop when i put my weight on my inside leg.
I can stop fine when I am going a bit faster then you are in the final step, but if i try to stop while skating fast my front foot tends to skip along the ice. Does that mean I'm putting weight on m front foot?

All of the muscles in your legs need to work together harmoniously, and until then, you might get a skip. Could also be your sharpening too. Try a different person to sharpen your skates after exhausting prior options.
does the skate need to be sharpened with a radius to do this kind of stop? i just have a basic 1/2" hollow but but no radius (i was told this was a good begining cut).
What if u want to stop with both feet and spray snow? how would u balance yourself? Also how can you turn and place one leg directly in front of the other?
I can stop on one side and I can't seem to find the way to stop, I always end up turning. If you could please respond it would be much appreciated. (If anyone asks, I'm a begginer ice skater). Thanks ;)
You may not be bending your knees enough. Or you could not have enough weight on whichever leg you are learning to stop on. Make sure that your blade is cleanly sliding on the ice. Otherwise you may have too much grip and it may cause you to turn. Also try turning just your hips and not your entire body. Basically just make sure you go through a mental checklist of all that Dan has said.
I think I can pretty much do this stop. I stopped like this and I thought I was doing it wrongly because i see people leaning on two skates to stop. I can do this stop also on roller blades.
