The reception problems I'm guessing are from the fact that the seperate antennas are on the exterior and only separated from one another by a slim bumper. Human skin is a conductor so when one covers the thin line he/she thereby slightly bridges the gap between the antennas therefore causing signal interference.

That's why the rubber bumper apple is pushing seems to solve the problem. It separates your conductive hand from the exposed antenna gap.
