  • smooth & sweet and compact..

  • Thanks buddy for sharing your knowledge and your swing! It makes sence now :)

All I need is to practice practice and practice. tks

  • better off counting 123 12 123 12...think of a waltz then 12 .... swings better

  • @thisaintright Thanks, now it makes sence ^^ xD Pretty easy after all, besides the ride i play: 1 bas, 2 snare , 3 nothing, 4 bas 5 snare then i play swing in the ride ^^

  • this is a really helpful video, can anybody link me to great videos like this for jazz in 4/4? or 3/4, whichever one is the most basic, I get confused between the two, im pretty sure it's 4/4 using triplets, thats what confuses me

  • It is 4/4 using sixteenth triplets, usually. If the quarter notes were tripleted then it would sound like 3/4.

It's probably better not to think of them as triplets though. Most jazz sheet music does not notate the triplets like in this video. Besides, swing is very fluid, and can be played however the performer likes. It's all in the delay of the "and"s, which can range from very slight and almost unnoticeable to heavy like if it reflected 7:4 septuplets instead of the standard 3:4 triplets.

  • I'm sorry, I made a mistake: if the HALF notes are triplets, then it sounds like 3/4.

  • GREAT SONG, love dave brubeck quartett! best jazz formation ever

  • the bass sounds soo .. hollow.. funny, because it is hollow

  • he tuned so it could sound like a jazz set

  • this beat reminds me of a black sabbath

  • ok. is this right? is 5/4 just quarter notes with an added note? like insted of 1-2-3-4. its 1-2-3-4-5?

if im wrong. correct me plz

  • yeah thats how it works. if it were 5/8 that would mean 5 eighth notes would fit in a measure n so on. hopes that helps

  • the top number it how many beat are a a mesure and the bottom tell you how to divide the beats. if its 6/4, there are six quater note in a mesure. if its 6/8 there 6 eith notes in a measure. in ?/4 quarters get 1 beat. in ?/8 eith notes get one beat. in ?/2, half note get 1 beat. ask me any questions if you have any.

  • so how would 6/8 work? would it be.. 1 n 2 n 3 n 4 n 5 n 6?

  • Not quite.

You play 6 eighth notes per measure. So if you were to stick with that method of counting it would be 1 & 2 & 3 &. Although, beats in odd time signatures are often counted without &'s or e's or anything of that nature. So it would be 1 2 3 4 5 6 per measure.

    Hope that helps.

  • he move his head like nobody.

  • This is indeed a very good lessen, a great way to understand how odd meters work.

Still I would advise anyone who is not familiar with the basic swing patterns to get Jim Chapins "Advanced techniques for the modern drummer" book before playing aroung in 5/4. :P

  • Beat 3 is from Jesus Christ Superstar: "Everything's Alright". Awesome groove buddy :P

  • Ah I thought I was the only one that knew it :P

  • i learn alot of you guys dont stop making vids!!

  • Thanks man... i appreciate the lessons!

  • wow cool that was awesome
