Yes Kenny Wayne does somewhat sound similar to Stevie Ray sometimes, but what he really did was take Stevie Ray's music to the next level. All the critics out there are jealous of KWS cause they probly can't play half as good
I agree to a point, Red, but blues has been around so long that I think it's all sounding the same these days. Or at least sounding like something someone else has already done. But you're right, KWS definitely focuses on Stevie particularly.
@redrumer13 Theres only 12 notes in the chromatic scale, of course some of them are bound to be the same. It's impossible after hundreds of years that anybody will play a lick that hasn't already been played.
@Maintenanceman1984 You obviously know nothing about KWS or SRV! Otherwise you might know what you're talking about! KWS is the greatest living guitarist!!
@Maintenanceman1984 You obviously know nothing about KWS or SRV! Otherwise you might know what you're talking about! Kenny had Stevie's blessing and even owns some of SRV's equipment. KWS is the greatest living guitarist!!
@dewton232 i think so too,...he is my fav. living axe player but i also love mayer and so many ppl hate on him cause on jelousy its crazy,...same thing with slash i just wish ppl would either practice and put up or shut up as the old saying goes lol!
@bigdaddystratman i honestly don't dig john mayer or slash at all and i promise you that it is not from jealousy.. i think the best living guitarist is john frusciante based on creativity. my problem with slash and mayer is tone you can add clapton to the list of rip-offs. kenny wayne pays his respect to the innovators but not because of lack of creativity.. mayer just can't go anywhere new and his tone is not distinct enough to be jealous of. i am jealous of duane allman. slash is a joke.
thanks for the reply, we are getting him an acoustic on his birthday. someone else suggested it as well.he is really eager to learn and has the hands for it too.lol kenny wayne is a good inspriration!!!
I love this song!! My son wants to learn guitar because of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang. anyone know of the best guitar to learn on?or does it matter?
learn on an acoustic first , its harder to play but less discouraging ... Great for learning , on a side note does anyone else think the singer here is Glen Danzigs illegitimate son?
He does not sound exactly like stevie ray vaughan, he sounds like him sometimes only because he is his main influence. to say they are the same is just ignorant, you must not listen to stevie ray vaughan or kenny much, there is no denying his talent as a writer and player.
i saw kenny this past summer with pat travers & lynyrd skynyrd,& he kicked ass. it's true that he has been influenced by other players, who hasn't, but to say "excessive imatatiion ",, dude,, are you just brain dead or just stoopid ? hell stevie copied jimi. & to say he played a song a little too fast,,, you've obviously never played onstage for a live crowd,, you feed off their energy, if you are so anal that you HAVE to play such a song at exactly so many bpm, you mite as well shoot yourself
Not to be too critical of anybody, but I'd love to hear what he'd come up with without always falling back on all of the SRV licks. Kenny plays good, but in my opinion; we have SRV's music. Let's hear something new man, something original. To me, excessive imitation is artistic suicide...People liked Stevie because he was unique, not just a Hendrix clone. I'd rather be an original nobody, than a copycat somebody...Let's hear new stuff Kenny!!!
No, I mean SRV's licks. Jimi and SRV both used pentatonic scales, but Stevie had his own brand of licks that Jimi didn't really use the same way. Kenny uses almost identical ones continually from Stevie's vocabulary. If you use pentatonic/blues scales, you will sound similar to other players using only those scales.
So, he has been written off by many as a Vaughanabe primarily because he borrows too heavily from Stevie's sound and style. So in my own OPINION, duplication is cheesey. I admire originality and people who create new directions in music. If everyone just copied everyone else...Man would that get boring!!!

There's only so far you can go with blues
Ther'e's only two out there doin this
KWS and Eric Gales
NO J Mayer is not a blues-rock player
I'd love to see Kenny do an albumn of
tunes like this one and Blue on Black
and just knock the socks off heavy

@yourunclehank1 kudos. i saw eric gales open up for kenny in around 2000 in athens ga. great show!!

@wmc1103 Caught them opening for King's X at a small
place on the lakefront outside N.O. in '91 . Absolutely
fantastic to see both of these bands in a small club
up close. Eric must have only been about 16. Love
the way Eric and Gene play with the guitar flipped
with high strings on top.
If you play - try it sometime - upside down and backwards
Whole different perspective!

If you're talking about the sound quality, then I'm with you all the way. But if you're talking about the song, then go boil an egg.

learn guitar on an acoustic first to get your son's fingers strong. Then after his fingers are strong get him a stratocaster.
