There is no reason for veterans to be in need. Access to the system is all that is needed. For my husband and me, both of us vets, the system works very well and we're grateful to have it.
I do want to kill myself, but everytime i plan it, i chicken out because i don't want to leave that debt for my mom or dad...so that's the only thing thats stopping me....though i do find myself at times, walking into oncoming traffic....but whatever, who cares right? just another dead guy, life goes on...its kind of like, if a tree dies in a forest, does anyone hear it fall? ....I respect and am greateful for all the vets out there helping each other!! I'm about to be homeless in January 2011, due to financial reasons...i served from 2004 to 2008 Honorably in the US Navy(Hospital Corpsman) but i suffer from PTSD, and skitzophrenia. I am on 70% disability, but that's only 1200 dollars a month and i'm being forced to pay 1500 dollars a month for debt/bills from my emergency surgery on my appendix in march 2011, of which the VA refuses to pay because it wasn't in their facility, but a civilian one..but it was midnight and they weren't open!!

Where is our politicians which we have wrote and they do nothing. we have the government NPRC, VA losing our reocords and admit it then we are denied by the VA for compensation because there is no records. They are intentally losing records, so they do not have to give compensation. Right now I been wait 5 years because the NPRC lost and admits loosing my reocords, i have been denied from the VA and now I wait for the VA appeals board another 3 year wait.

Sorry everyone; but the fact is this. There is homeless veterans. But Guess what. They did it to themselves. They had a job when they where in the military. But they got out of the military for some reason. If they needed a job so bad they should have stayed in the military. If they got out because of some medical reason the VA takes care of them with medical care, and a PENSION! They have no excuse. Interesting how we have so much money to keep sending people to blow things up, watch their brethren die but we have no money for rehab (that is worthy) or shelters. Interesting how probability goes up for alcohol addiction with these issues. A person gets a bad discharge and then they cannot get aid. Works out well for someone, just not the veteran.
I don't know how many thousands of miles away from, say, Boston or San Francisco (2 edges of USA territory) Iraq and Afeganistan are, and how exactly the military pple thought that they were doing a "service" to the USA by choosing to kill and be killed in such distant & foreign countries. If you read any accounts, of veterans not being able to get help. Dont, listen to it. Iam a airforce veteran who was homeless, for 20 yrs and drug addicted. But, when i decided to get help. A veterans program on the grounds of the v.a. @ west los angeles, called NEW DIRECTIONS and a housing program, called U.S. VETS in inglewood, ca was there for me. And that was 10 yrs ago. And since then i have never looked back. If you want it, its there for you. But, only if you can follow "NEW DIRECTIONS"

i think that the main reason why vets are homeless is because the military teaches people how to live by means of bivouac. the evidence is right there in survival manual FM 21-76. if they've been trained by those means, there's all kinds of little shelters they can build for themselves for little or no money at all.
I am a iraq vet that was homeless for almost 2 yrs until a friend took me in, now thanks to no work and no money Im trying to get back in. I have spoken to several real estate agents and what I am going to tell you is shameful. Many military wives (with children) are applying for VA loans while hubby is over-seas. The banks have become greedy and are only interested in 20% to 30% CASH down on affordable homes, foreclosed homes and short sales. They frown at VA loans. I know. Your going to say they can't do that. Well, those banks don't give a crap about veterans and VA loans. This is in California. The "money pit" of america.

I was a jarhead. Got out in '96. Was seventeen when I joined. I wish I hadn't. The VA has caused me nothing but more grief. It's sad. Social Security has treated me very good, and is the only reason I'm not on the streets. They wonder why vets threaten to go postal when dealing with the VA. It's because of the ridicule they get when asking for help. Usually more so having to due with PTSD than anything.

Sure there are guys scamming, everyone knows that. Most of us, however joined at seventeen or eighteen. While our civilian peers were getting work experience or an education, we were earning near min. wage in some remote theaters. We can either stay in for 20 years, or we can separate in which case we're just dumped at the airport. No resume, no marketable skill set (one interviewer told me that he meant, 'real leadership'), and sometimes bearing injuries. We just need some help, that's it.

Many people need acute mental health and/or substance addiction treatment before they can hold a steady job and find an apartment of their own. My ex-wife screwed me over and got the house and assets. Luckily I live with family, but even with a 4-year degree I have had trouble finding decent, steady work. I found out that there are good people in bad situations.
This speaks to one of the great ironies of many Americans - they strongly support sending troops to war, but at the same time support tax cuts that often result in cuts to social programs that serve to help the homeless. "Get a job!" is easy for someone to say, who has not experienced or been permanently altered by the horrors of war.
It's really a shame that these people and other non-vets should have to live like this anywhere in the U.S. Why can't the H.H.S. dept.,VA, labor dept.,Housing dept.,etc. come up with a real plan that truly helps the people out there - now. Not just a bunch of beaurocrats squabbling about budget constraits, excuses. These make the system less user friendly to the people in need. Iv'e worked in social services and had to use them too.

I just shudder to think about how many people destroyed by this war will fall through the cracks. If they can't deal with or care to deal with the Vietnam era veterans, they certainly won't try any harder for the latest victims of their wars. For as we all know, soldiers fight the politicians' wars. It is nice to know that they are thankful.
I am a member of the board of directors for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. We have been open since January '07 it is a transisional home to help veterans get back on their feet. We went to Washington and met with Senators Durban and Obama who promised to introduce a bill to provide out shelter with $175,000. Come to find out they never introduced the bill. We are in an expansion process and we WILL provide a home for twenty more veterans without their help.
How sad that we can't even take care of our men and women in uniform when they come home...they did not train my hubby to get out, but they sure as hell did when he went in...the VA is a joke, and we need to revamp the system before many more become like these men...sad...Misti Jo

I do want to kill myself, but everytime i plan it, i chicken out because i don't want to leave that debt for my mom or dad...so that's the only thing thats stopping me....though i do find myself at times, walking into oncoming traffic....but whatever, who cares right? just another dead guy, life goes on...its kind of like, if a tree dies in a forest, does anyone hear it fall? ....I respect and am greateful for all the vets out there helping each other!! I'm about to be homeless in January 2011, due to financial reasons...i served from 2004 to 2008 Honorably in the US Navy(Hospital Corpsman) but i suffer from PTSD, and skitzophrenia. I am on 70% disability, but that's only 1200 dollars a month and i'm being forced to pay 1500 dollars a month for debt/bills from my emergency surgery on my appendix in march 2011, of which the VA refuses to pay because it wasn't in their facility, but a civilian one..but it was midnight and they weren't open!!

Where is our politicians which we have wrote and they do nothing. we have the government NPRC, VA losing our reocords and admit it then we are denied by the VA for compensation because there is no records. They are intentally losing records, so they do not have to give compensation. Right now I been wait 5 years because the NPRC lost and admits loosing my reocords, i have been denied from the VA and now I wait for the VA appeals board another 3 year wait.

If you read any accounts, of veterans not being able to get help. Dont, listen to it. Iam a airforce veteran who was homeless, for 20 yrs and drug addicted. But, when i decided to get help. A veterans program on the grounds of the v.a. @ west los angeles, called NEW DIRECTIONS and a housing program, called U.S. VETS in inglewood, ca was there for me. And that was 10 yrs ago. And since then i have never looked back. If you want it, its there for you. But, only if you can follow "NEW DIRECTIONS"

i think that the main reason why vets are homeless is because the military teaches people how to live by means of bivouac. the evidence is right there in survival manual FM 21-76. if they've been trained by those means, there's all kinds of little shelters they can build for themselves for little or no money at all.

I have spoken to several real estate agents and what I am going to tell you is shameful. Many military wives (with children) are applying for VA loans while hubby is over-seas. The banks have become greedy and are only interested in 20% to 30% CASH down on affordable homes, foreclosed homes and short sales. They frown at VA loans. I know. I was a jarhead. Got out in '96. Was seventeen when I joined. I wish I hadn't. The VA has caused me nothing but more grief. It's sad. Social Security has treated me very good, and is the only reason I'm not on the streets. They wonder why vets threaten to go postal when dealing with the VA. It's because of the ridicule they get when asking for help. Usually more so having to due with PTSD than anything.

While our civilian peers were getting work experience or an education, we were earning near min. wage in some remote theaters. We can either stay in for 20 years, or we can separate in which case we're just dumped at the airport. No resume, no marketable skill set (one interviewer told me that he meant, 'real leadership'), and sometimes bearing injuries. We just need some help, that's it.

What do you mean "only served for a few years" ?I cant believe you just said that. These men risked their lives serving their country and got absolutely nothing to show for. Many have gotten mental and drug addictions from that war. How could you be that merciless to say that about homeless veterans. And trust me, being on financial aid isn't comfortable. So please grow up and see the whole picture. They served the country and should be taken care of, period. P-S, Im against war

Many people need acute mental health and/or substance addiction treatment before they can hold a steady job and find an apartment of their own. My ex-wife screwed me over and got the house and assets. Luckily I live with family, but even with a 4-year degree I have had trouble finding decent, steady work. I found out that there are good people in bad situations.

This speaks to one of the great ironies of many Americans - they strongly support sending troops to war, but at the same time support tax cuts that often result in cuts to social programs that serve to help the homeless. "Get a job!" is easy for someone to say, who has not experienced or been permanently altered by the horrors of war.

It's really a shame that these people and other non-vets should have to live like this anywhere in the U.S. Why can't the H.H.S. dept.,VA, labor dept.,Housing dept.,etc. come up with a real plan that truly helps the people out there - now. Not just a bunch of beaurocrats squabbling about budget constraits, excuses. These make the system less user friendly to the people in need. Iv'e worked in social services and had to use them too.

I went throught over $300,000 in VA "help". Still homeless, no training, no job. I told them I need real job training in the first place-absoulutely not. All they want is to convert the vet into that AA cult religion and accept dead-end jobs for life! All I need is real job training! Chris

I just shudder to think about how many people destroyed by this war will fall through the cracks. If they can't deal with or care to deal with the Vietnam era veterans, they certainly won't try any harder for the latest victims of their wars. For as we all know, soldiers fight the politicians' wars. It is nice to know that they are thankful.

I am a member of the board of directors for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. We have been open since January '07 it is a transisional home to help veterans get back on their feet. We went to Washington and met with Senators Durban and Obama who promised to introduce a bill to provide out shelter with $175,000. Come to find out they never introduced the bill. We are in an expansion process and we WILL provide a home for twenty more veterans without their help.

Yes. Not sure what planet you are on, but moral and re-enlistment is not thru the roof, your exaduration tells us something. Using FORCE to try to create democracy is the wrong approach, and it will ultimately fail. Breaking international laws sets a bad presidence. What is to stop Russia or China from attacking any country they can cook the books on and say that they are a threat? We did it, so why shouldn't they?

Wrong again . . the bonus applies only to new recruits with no prior military service who enlist for at least two years active duty in America's Army. They must agree to report to basic training within 30 days of enlistment. So your weak reply was not even a blip on the screen. You have failed again.
Also $16,000 does not equal $20,000, so it is indeed the first time . . . keep trying . . . at least your consistant . . . consistantly WRONG.
