The Amstrad conversion by Ocean is pretty damn awesome. Might be worth trying.
Ive got to say though, considering how difficult it is to program atari 2600s, this is a great effort. Perhaps not as impressive as games with dozens of moving objects but still pretty good.
Since playing a few other versions of this game, my opinion of the Atari version has risen considerably. The graphics may be poor, but the gameplay is way better than say Intellivision or Oric versions.
That was my skill level with this game back in the day. Great memories though.

i always experienced Donkey Kong for the atari 800xl as one of the most enjoyable versions.

I did know... I have one, and Donkey Kong to play on it too :D
