All I got was at the beginning she asks him if he's deaf or hearing and he says about how he can hear some with a hearing aid in his right ear... after that I'm just getting individual words here and there (been signing ASL for ten years..) International sign - I've got a loooong way to go!
I am fluent in ASL and am confident that I got at least the gist of this conversation on a minimal level; though did by no means get all of it. There were signs in there that were part of international signing, and there were several phrases that were ASL or at least shared the same signs as ASL. Interesting to watch.
i understand what they are saying. the guy dosent share the same language as me but i guess we do have some words that are similar or the same , but still is it rly asl it looks like he uses the swedish letters and the word for mum and dad is the same as swedish and the wat he says 22 ?
@Amatrix00 I'm not sure but there could be a change that Finnish and Swedish signlanguage has some same signs since they're so near each other. My sister had studied it, maybe she knows...
Signmark will participate in the national selection in Finland for Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) which is held in Moscow next spring. Their song is called Speakerbox. I will surely vote for the them the national contest. So search for Signmark Speakerbox
With my level of ASL fluency I was suprised I understood as much as I did. Was all or some of that IS? If so I'm intrigued as to how quick I might be able to pick it up and utilized it to communicate to other country signers using less gesturing due to common signs. I'm not pro IS being developed other than a natural progression of it but as a tool to help more people communicate it's a great start
You know, they're signing too fast for 2nd hand translations. They're probably siging in German--since her location is listed as Austria.
It does make you think of the logistics of international sign translation. Is ASL just another common "signed" language (like spoken English is for many non-native English speakers)?
To explain further, Germany and Austria share a spoken language but their sign languages are different; same with UK and USA. ASL has become a lingua franca for many, esp because of the Deaf university in Washington DC (Gallaudet). ASL is descended from French Sign Language + many Europeans sign langauges are related; so Europeans often understand large chunks of ASL. Kinda like hearing Portugese speakers understanding chunks of spoken/written Italian.
Now, if she's signing in Chinese (and not Austrian or English or Finnish), he would need additional translation.
Since he's watching a translator off screen, that translator either, 1) knows both Chinese and Finnis/or/English, or 2) is taking his translations from a *2nd* translator who's converting her signs (into English or the shared language) so he can resign them in Finnish. Whew.
What do you think? Or are they just signing in English?
You don't "sign in English" or "Chinese". She starts off with Chinese Sign Language, probably for her audience (she's from China). Then she switches to internationalised forms with ASL-ish signs, he uses similar forms - so they understand each other; they're co-creating a pidgin based ASL/IS. He's not watching a translator off screen, he's watching her. He apparently knows ASL, Finnish SL, written Finnish and written Eng.
