I use to see this all the time in arcades. The one home version that I have is for the Saturn. I've read before that Atari had a coinop version of the Jaguar called the COJAG. I believe this was one of only 7 titles that used it. A shame it never came out on the Jaguar home console. It would have been one of the better games for the system.
wow....i remember how mind blowing the original once was (at least I thought...and i could run the whole game on 4 bucks)...hasn't aged too well though..i was actually kinda shocked at how horrible it looks today, lol. i just bought the california speed arcade machine and i'd buy this too if i could find one.
Fun game, somehow it reminded me of Doom back then *I played a whole lot of Doom back in my childhood* but when I was at the arcade, I never had enough money to beat the game. D:
About 6 months ScrewAttackEurope said "Wii has plenty too, Konami have just released a game very much like Area 51, called Maximum Force for the Wii." I am looking for any info on that I'd really like to play that on the Wii but haven't been able to find anything anywhere about it thanks for any help you can give me in pointing me in right direction.
OMG! I remember playing this when I was about 5! I only really got to level 2, though, and if i remember that one at the begining who said 'stay low' when you lost turned into one of those creatures and i'm still scarred to this day!
Well I've double checked the back of the box, though it just lists a few "facts" about the game, it does have the line "Powerups and sophisticated weaponry keep you armed and dangerous".
The copy I brought of this game, dosn't have that "awesome weaponry" line on the back, probably because it's packaged under the Midway classics package line & was re-realeased around 1998/2000, according to the back of the box.
I wish there was a system that would put out classic 90's arcade games like this in the same graphics or better that they were, rather than trying to improve on them by making them 3d. Cause back in the day when you'd get the game for your system the graphics weren't as good as the arcade, then this style of shooting games as well as 2d fighting games (which are better imo) went out.
Well a lot of Xbox Live Arcade games are like that (have a look at Bionic Commando Rearmed) but the Wii has plenty too, Konami have just released a game very much like Area 51, called Maximum Force for the Wii.
I dunno I played the demo of the newest game but I didn't like the controls that much, I did like Area 51 on the PC it didn't come out only for PS2 and Xbox, maybe not the same game? :S dunno.
Its slightly better than the 360 version, its not the greatest FPS in history, but it's worth a play through! It's a wee bit like Resistance Fall of Man to some extent.
The first time i played this was on a ferry that took me to my grandpa. I pumped it full of pounds, and then this kid decided tp push the start button for player two! I was dual wielding light guns! But it was so fun!
I've had that happen twice to me once as a kid, some kid pounding on the start button while I was putting in money in TMNT and once while playing Moonwalker. Which I got so pissed off about I rammed the kids head into the machine.
I remember playing this is the arcades in Wales, and the Aerosmith one but that sucked because I think you had to pay more money to carry on with the next level.
I forgotten what that game's name was. I remember running into it everywhere I go. Every resturant and pizza place had it. Found it a few days ago at a store for PS1.
Anyone wonder about that guy in 1:27? After you get picked up by the helicopter's latter, the guy in it continues to drive and you can see him crash and explode.
lol I was in grade 9 when me and my buddy would ride our bikes all the way to the Arcade (we lived in a hick town) to play Area51! What a game! I never knew it ran on hardware similar to the Jag either.
i played the first game actually when i was little and placed this and i thought it was really scary XD but it was a really fun game shame i hav'nt played the others they look fun too :D
Thanks for the lesson, it's good to go back to school. History of gaming should be a required course in grade school, that way maybe the younger generation would have more respect for the classics!
I remember a friend gave me a bunch of quarters to play Area 51 at a bowling alley so he could bang his gf in my truck without fear of me catching him in the act. So I'm sitting there dual wielding on Area 51 while he's getting laid in my truck. I'm not sure who had more fun.
Yeah,I hate that rule, even censored games like The Darkness "german version" are still 18+ here, while other games like Condemned don't even get a rating, and since Nintendo,Sony & Microsoft don't sell unrated games here,we have to import them from other european countries, which costs more of course.
This needs a rerelease or HD remake. NOW.

rampe94 3 years ago
You mean of this game?
To be honest, I've not played the PC version, but its FMV was a little ropey in those days so i'd guess they'd be about the same.
I would prefer to play it on a PS1 myself, as you'd need a nice big TV to enjoy it.
ScrewAttackEurope 3 years ago
But I think its a bit easier to use a mouse, rather then a d-pad, because I have no light gun to PS1.
rampe94 3 years ago
This was one of the few games that worked with the PS1 mouse funilly enough!

Yeah, I was going to get in on the 360... is it any good on that?
ComedyKube 3 years ago
Its slightly better than the 360 version, its not the greatest FPS in history, but it's worth a play through! It's a wee bit like Resistance Fall of Man to some extent.

LOL,12+ in the UK,18+ in germany -_-
MightyTallestZim82 3 years ago
It was when Germany was coming off it's "no shooting humans" rule.
ScrewAttackEurope 3 years ago
Yeah,I hate that rule, even censored games like The Darkness "german version" are still 18+ here, while other games like Condemned don't even get a rating, and since Nintendo,Sony & Microsoft don't sell unrated games here,we have to import them from other european countries, which costs more of course.
MightyTallestZim82 3 years ago
Its bizarre how Condemned went completly unnoticed in the press/censors.
ScrewAttackEurope 3 years ago
Not here in germany,it got confiscated by law, which means selling it here is illegal. The last time I saw this happen was for Manhunt.
MightyTallestZim82 3 years ago
I've seen that before, there was a load of Brewhaha over Return to Castle Wolfenstien on the Xbox, that was banned in Germany too.
