The novel called Shantaram describes the self-sustined society within the Bombay slums - it is an amazing novel, the collaberation of the people in the slums is incredible and touching to read about.

You are quite right about the presence of Indians in the US as entrepreneurs. Sixty percent of motels are Indain owned in the US ( ref BBC). 1. Akshay pathiram...a healthier mid day meals program for the sick
2. start teaching the next generation who are now being wasted on streets and construction sites
3. bring corrupt officials to book and courts
4. be a torch bearer for the weak and suffering
5. Write a book on how you left your airconditioned bedroom, laptop and google chat to change a suffering country

@dotcomdotauatfake actually they are happy. i live in india and though i've never lived in a slum (i'm from a middle class family) i've been there and met people. when you don't have much, you learn to appreciate everything single thing that much more. you don't take anything for granted. rates of depression are actually very low in the slum population. you and I both won't understand because we didn't grow up in a slum.

Plenty of people live in nice homes and apartments and there are plenty of very nice places in India. Don't judge the whole country based on the slums. New York City has some of the most dangerous and dirty ghettos around, but we don't judge all of America based on it.

@Telears the top 20% of indians live better lifestyles than the majority of people in america or europe- that is over 200 million people. yes, india has many poor people, but it also has plenty of people having great lifestyles, which you never see because the media loves to focus on poverty. also, poverty is rapidly falling as the economy booms, currently only 27.5% of people live under the poverty line, while now 1 in 7 americans (over 14%) are going hungry.

We need to work in order to survive, we live miserable lives slaving away so we can go on holiday for two weeks in a year. The novel called Shantaram describes the self-sustined society within the Bombay slums - it is an amazing novel, the collaberation of the people in the slums is incredible and touching to read about.

You are quite right about the presence of Indians in the US as entrepreneurs. Sixty percent of motels are Indain owned in the US ( ref BBC). I dont know if they are doing well or rich but at least they are getting involved in commerce, adding to the economy, paying taxes and not scrounging on state welfare.

I also read the book Shantaram which desribed a very vivid picture of the slums of Bombay. From what I have learnt these people are loving, kind, selfless and are as clean as can be considering the shortage of materials they have. Before anyone decides to slur them, first take time to research into why they are living like this and how much love they have to give. Open your minds and learn!
