I'm courious.. Why can't they remove the 2nd skeleton? I'm guessing it'd take years and years and leave nasty scars with a lot of surgory, but I'm not a doctor. Anyone know why they can't remove the 2nd layor?
@MyRotflCopterGoesSoi The surgery aggravates the disease and causes more bone growth around the area, so surgery is pretty much the worst possible thing any doctor can do a sufferer of fop. Hopefully one day we'll have some sort of genetic therapy that can shut off the function of this gene and stop the superfluous bone growth, after which the 'second skeleton' will be able to be removed safely.

I think that the term, 'turn to stone' is kind of offensive to people with FOP. they don't technically turn to stone. their tendons, muscles, ligaments, etc. ossify when damaged because the body's repair mechanism is mutated.

My brother has FOP. It is so very hard to watch him when he is in pain. But he is the strongest person I know and he is MY HERO. He is only 13 years old but he lives a happy life. We have a very close and loving family & we all pray for a cure for FOP. Some day there WILL be one. I ill continue to pray for my brother along with everyone else who suffers from FOP.

If you try to remove the bone growth, it will grow back worse. There's a gene that is responsible for bone growth while in the womb. Normally, when the skeleton is fully developed, this gene deactivates. For people with this disease, that gene never deactivates, and the body is always developing new bone growth.
These people have to go through hell to even move a muscle. They have to go through reconstructive bone surgery which is incredibly painful to endure.
these people have more bravery than most of us will ever have.

Think about this: the bible could just be a story book someone wrote, or a story that was passed down, and then someone believed it and went like "Hey, this is important! I should write it down!". @MyRotflCopterGoesSoi The surgery aggravates the disease and causes more bone growth around the area, so surgery is pretty much the worst possible thing any doctor can do a sufferer of fop. Hopefully one day we'll have some sort of genetic therapy that can shut off the function of this gene and stop the superfluous bone growth, after which the 'second skeleton' will be able to be removed safely.

I think that the term, 'turn to stone' is kind of offensive to people with FOP. they don't technically turn to stone. their tendons, muscles, ligaments, etc. ossify when damaged because the body's repair mechanism is mutated.

My brother has FOP. It is so very hard to watch him when he is in pain. But he is the strongest person I know and he is MY HERO. He is only 13 years old but he lives a happy life. We have a very close and loving family & we all pray for a cure for FOP. Some day there WILL be one. I ill continue to pray for my brother along with everyone else who suffers from FOP.

If you try to remove the bone growth, it will grow back worse. There's a gene that is responsible for bone growth while in the womb. Normally, when the skeleton is fully developed, this gene deactivates. For people with this disease, that gene never deactivates, and the body is always developing new bone growth.
