  • cracking song froom one of the best bands of the 60s

  • That is a grate song and reminds me of my uncal neil who sadly passed away a few years ago am just sad he didn't gt to see me turn my life around love u neily boy xxxx

  • No mistaking Bobbys style of drumming and Tony still looks like a teenager and Alan...well, just awesome.

  • rip alex 12weeks and my heart still hurts xx

  • jeez Tony Hicks still looks like what he did 20 years hence.

  • the writer of this song was listing to a catholic radio station, A priest saw a Mexican boy carrying his crippled brother on his back, the priest asked the boy, don`t you find him heavy, the rest is history. But i guess this song can mean anything you like. i see 4 dislikes, here`s hoping they don`t get early parole

  • @evilofisalm, thanks for the background for the song´s meaning, very interesting!

  • @evilofisalm this song came from the movie "Boys Town" with Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracey as Fr. Flannigan (great story!)

  • love this 10 weeks 2nite love and miss you 2day & always xxxxx

  • How music used to be before puppet master Simon cowell an his team of songwriters killed musical creativity by real bands. All he cares about is money not music. Some great new bands out there doing pubs n clubs but will never make it cos they can't dance n mime n be controlled.

  • Hello Ian Marks, thanks for those photos mate..I was born at the ending of that beautiful decade..

  • "doesn't way me down" :))

  • The Hollies are still performing - just got tickets to see them at Wimbledon 1 October - cant wait!

  • Love this song.....The good old days when life was not complicated!

  • I photographed the Hollies in 1977 in Canada. To see the shots go to ianmarkmusicpahotos (.com)

  • Definitely very under-rated. Super talented and Tons of hits!!!!!!!!!!!! Time for a tour of the guys who are still left !!!!!

  • @glgale92 The Hollies with Alan Clarke on lead were and are phenomenal

and this song is not only their anthem . . . but that of many of our GI's during Vietnam

  • nice

  • @fsvjeany me too

  • me too

  • God i love these old songs

  • jaime beaucoup cette music merci beaucoup

  • Total agreement, a very understated group , never fail to give a good performance, and Alan Clark, what a voice,.....nothing else to say really. Truly excellent.

  • i miss TOTP

  • this song touches my heart...deep

  • Alan Clark, indeed, one of the very best singers . And what great songs they have made. I am already fan for more than 40 years.

  • is alan an original

  • for me , the Hollies one of the best bands ever! Despite Beatles or Stones!!!

They never had a reason to hide themselves!!!!

And Hicks is still one of the best guitarists in the business!!! And of course Allan one of the best singers!!!!

  • @70sdiscobabe No, Carl Wayne, who replaced Clarke when he retired in 1999, died in 2004. Afaik, Allan Clarke is still alive & well.

  • Can he mime any worse!!!!

  • 4 ppl must be crazy. How can u not like this timeless classic.

  • How this only got to No 3 in the charts in 1969 when it was first released, I'll never know, but fantastic that it got to No 1 when it was re-released, almost 20 years later - a timeless classic - thanks!

  • @M400fan obviously the best music was written in the late 60's early 70's(though i'm an avid 80's fan as well). Look atb those charts! Amazing! Real music. Today the charts are made by young parents who buy their kids the biggest crap, or record companies buying their own singles to "plug" another talentless halfwit! That's what's wrong! None of my peers listen to that crap.

On topic: this really is a classic , my dad used to play this a lot so it's part of my childhood.

  • love the song

  • They're awesome! I know I am going to get a lot of grief from Beatles fans, but I think these guys are better because they didn't have the publicity of the fab four but still continued to turn out hits! The Beatles had a massive audience...would some of their songs be as good if they weren't the "Beatles?."

  • @pds3939 Answer to the question....Yes. The testament to this is the continued air time they get. You shouldn't get any grief for your opinion or preference of music. It's a little like saying the color blue is better than the color red. I applaud your choice, even though I like the Beatles more, because you are your own lead and not following popular opinion (whatever that may be). As for this song, no one nails it like Clarke, especially in the good ole days. In my top 10 of the era.

  • These guys looked old in 1988..That said, they sounded SUPERB!

  • they played this song today bij the service from my brother'he passed away 5 days ago

  • God I love this song...real musicians playing instruments, words with Real meaning, and have heard this a couple hundred times and the sentiments in this song still make me tear up...what a better world if more people applied the teachings of Christ which is really what this song is saying without making it religion.

  • best song ever!!!

  • Clarke's vocal is one of the best

  • @maipu741 Little chance of that , Neil Diamond isnt even in it and he wrote this bloody song

  • @colotron Bobby Russell wrote this song while dying of cancer in Los Angeles. Neil didn't write it, sorry.

  • Fantastic cover of one of Neil Diamonds best's

  • @colotron Neil Diamond didn't write it Bobby Scott and Bob Russell did.

  • i love my brother chaz xxxxxxx

  • que bella voz tienes Allan Clarke

  • Lucky me I have the best bro in the World

  • ...er weiß, von was er singt!!!

  • miming

  • @MACHAWK123 not at all

  • The Hollies Geniales!! Incomparables!! únicos!!! muchas gracias por subir este video.

  • immense talent when you see these guys live.

  • These gentlemen enjoy playing this song. You can see it in their expression.and the feelingthey put into the song..absolutely fantastic...ty for posting.

  • Thank you so so much..this song is wonderful.Best regards from São Paulo, Brasil.

  • Es la voz inconfundible de los Hollies.

  • Wonderful song

  • Allan is one of the greatest frontmen in Rock History. Thanks for posting!

Tony is as gorgeous as ever-and what an awesome guitarist he is.

    Long live The Hollies. ♫

  • Yes Allan has a great voice but as far as a front man, I don't think so. Not even in the top 10 and not that he suck but every clip I have seen he just stands there, very boring! Best front men

    Ian Anderson

    Peter Wolf

    Sammy Hagar

    Robert Plant

  • I think for that genre his style suited. Others have been showier of course and imo I would add Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, and Ronnie Van Zant, to that list. I've only had the honor of watching Morrison and Van Zant on film-and to me they are both mesmerizing in their own way. Great front men all and it takes a real gift I think to front a band so memorably.

  • @peteyball420 what about the late great Freddie??

  • @peteyball420 He won't be boring doing it live lol

  • I was there 1988 on top of the pops!

  • Allan Clarke is one of the most under-celebrated singers. What a voice!

  • @buildthis99 completely agree!!!

  • @buildthis99 100% - wonderful voice

  • @buildthis99 Man...you are not kidding. He had it all, soul, power and emotion. Very, very under rated, one of the very best.

  • @buildthis99 He's my Nana's cousin :)

  • Nice its actually live, this is 1987 when the song got it`s No1 in UK charts, which it diden`t achieve in 1969

  • Great song, great job by them!

  • For me,Hollies is one of the greatest band of all times

  • this should always be at the top of any chart period!

    peace

  • who is the bassist

  • Isn't it Bern Calvert? I'm not sure though.

  • It was Alan Coates whom played with the Hollies until 2004. Bernie Calvert quit along with Terry Sylvester in around 1981.

  • You are right!

  • Good performance and at least there are actually three real Hollies here!

  • Allan is still a great singer

  • The most great feeling in life is love itself.,

so don't be afraid to love your brothers and sisters...we are passangers on earth..have a nice journey!

  • This song makes me feel more considerate toward others.

There 's also powerful message in a film Trains, Planes and Automobiles. John Candy had been an incredible nuisance to Steve Martin through extreme ineptitude. Martin was glad to complete his journey and be rid of Candy yet in the end when Martin realises that Candy will spend xmas alone his heart softens and he invites Candy home for xmas. These annecdotes help us realise that small sacrifices can help make another persons life better.

  • Best song ever...if you really listen. It's about about how we should all love one another and help each other. Not something I have seen in my neighbourhood recently and I am trying to change. If you can help one couple slipping up, This is my favorite song...love to your friends, neighbours, strangers...Don't stand around bitching...go find out why you don't like someone, you may be surprised. Go love and support your 'brother' people. Whoever it may be. Hugs. Robyn

  • If you get real serious about life and helping other people.........this might be the best song ever written and the Hollies of the 70's were the only band to pull it off the way they did. I'm not ready to check out just yet but when I do this may very well be added to my will to have played at my funeral.

  • great song i love it

  • The Hollies and The Beatles are The TopMost -Band

    Leo Anttila Finland Lammi

  • Had this played at my dearest friends funeral; I cried.

  • The Hollies Should be in The Hall of Fame..This is a Fantastic song..

I lost my brother and I LOVE PERFORMING this song ..

  • You have to be kidding me,These guys are seriously not in the fame,What a friggen insult.Yet there are so many nobodys in there that most of us have never heard of that have been in the lime light for a couple of days.

To me the Hall of fame seems like a JOKE,Perhaps an insult to be in there

  • not sure why you have so many thumbs down to this comment. i put a thumbs up because i think folk misunderstood what you said. :)

  • There are only TWO thumbs down,Lets face it tho,If a group like the Hollies are not in the FAME and yet some losers that we have never heard of are in there,Then the FAME must be an insult to be in.

What sort of drop kicks vote these groups in

  • the hall of fame is to rock and roll as my grandma is to russian thrash poetry. that is to say it's a joke as far as i can tell. the voters aren't musicians and the acts chosen are suspiciously close to their businesses, i.e. it's rigged. granted, you can't induct *every* great act immediately (there's a 25 year rule anyway), but they should be in. eventually. if not, who cares? VH1's award has more significance imo anyway. at least it's more about rock than the sham in cleveland.

  • the best song they ever done

  • Immortal.

  • rubbish!!..coatsie..great high harmony

  • thank you for the sentiment. we err in life, we have difficulties and we are judged for our errors.

    thank you for thinking otherwise.

    peace

  • my brother just passed away and this song just touches me we were close and will miss him this song just hits the spot I love it.

  • The Topmost Leo anttila Finland

  • Does anyone know why and when Terry Sylvester left.?

    They miss his harmony here.

    Still the greatest song ever.

  • In some books, he left sometime in 1981 along with Bernie Calvert after an argument.

  • giant of a song,..brother love,means a lot

  • The Best !!! leo antiila Finland

  • Possibly the greatest song ever recorded.

  • I'm missing Terry's voice BADLY...SOB!

  • lol father dick byrne oO

  • No matter what key the Hollies sing this song in, it is one of the most gut wrenching songs I have ever heard. I have a brother with MS. This song describes how I feel about him perfectly.

  • in my opinion this is a terrific performance. this is an outstanding song with powerful and blunt lyrics, and the words are reinforced by the singer's mannerisms and serious, focused demeanor

    bravo!

  • ....with harmonica clutched in left hand all the while

  • His larynx can't stand the original pitch..

  • now dont get me wrong the hollies is fucking fantastic but i wonder when the audiance is aplauding there being polite or they really love the perfomance

  • That Drummer is SHIT HOT

  • he is a good drummer - what is his name? bobby elliot??

  • claro os veo con los ojos del alma.Me encantan.

  • son todos preciosos.

  • Check out the brand new YT video titled "Tony Hicks" dedicated to the most gorgeous talented guitarist ever. I think you'll be pleased. ; D

  • LOL!!! That's my Tony. I do have to disagree with you on the hair though. God blessed that man with a gorgeous head of hair. Hmm, I always did have a thing for Martin Short. :)

FYI He dated a beautiful English actress for many years. I only wish I were that lucky. :(

Thanks for the reply! Time to watch that magic moment again. Ah swoooon...

  • OMG! Look at Tony 1:20-1:25. Swoon! He is SOOOOOO gorgeous! My life is complete, I can die happy now. = D

    <3 <3 <3 LOVE YOU TONY <3 <3 <3 !!!

  • OUTSTANDING !!!

    THANX !!!

  • reminds me of zoolander

  • Totally choice

  • Awesome..I love him soo much

  • far out man

  • GREAT SONG!!!

  • One of many great hits by one of the very best groups of the sixties. This song belongs to Allan Clarkes voice. And like the rest of The Hollies hits, not only the harmony, but also the beat is perfect. Bobby Elliot deserves a lot of credit.

  • Poor Allen can't belt them out like he used to, but heck, neither can Paul McCartney. I guess all singers lose their voices, what a shame.

On the plus side, Allan looks so handsome and distinguished, but he does look older than 46. Tony looks the same, what ever he did worked!

  • why do some people recommend comments like 'this is good!' ... do you think those are important comments for me to read?

  • Stuff I learned. It became a hit again in 1988 cuz it was used in a beer commercial. Also, Elton John played the piano on the original recording .......

  • The Hollies had the widest song range of any group through the 70's. Thanks for the fantastic memories guys!

Allan Clarke you are the man...

  • I agree, how come they're not in the Hall of fame? this is a great group and this is a very very great song, full of meanings, I love it and brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it, today as it did in the past.

  • The Hollies are awesome the way they harmonize. Did you know that Neil Diamond wrote the song? He always has great lyrics. In this case he was better to pass it to the Hollies. I love Neil too but he can not sing this song.

  • neil diamond did not write this song; it was written by russell and ______? and acc'g to wiki, the song rights were eventually the subject of a legal dispute. can you imagine??

  • Because the R&R HOF is a friggin` scam and a joke.

Personally I think it's un-cool to be in the R&RHOF as it is right now.

    Madonna ?

    WTF?

The Hollies, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Yes, Rush, ELO, ELP,etc ... just too many to list that should have been in by now

  • ''so on we go''

  • Awesome song after all these years!

  • WHAT AN AWESOME BAND THESE ARE...

  • oldies but goodies!!!

  • How come they're not in the Rock N Roll Hall of fame???

  • Good Question.

  • What a moving song... It still brings out emotion in me all these years later..

  • This isn't the orignal band, clare still the lead, after nash left

  • Using the word "heavy" with the 70's meaning. If you do not understand I won't try and explain itbecause I tried to do that on another video and failed.

  • This song was from terry fox documentary, hollies sang this song in the 60's 20 year later from the 80's they revised it,, they rock

  • still good 20 yrs later

  • heard it the first time in 88....thought it was a new song back then..

  • No, it's not so good as with Terry Silvester.

  • See the clip from Boywoolner

  • Great song. Does anyone know why this was re-released in 1988? I've always wanted to know as Bill Medley's version was featured in "Rambo III" which was released in the UK in August 1988. Brings back memories of around the time of it's re-release for me.

  • This was rereleased in 88 beccause of the Miller-Lite Beer campaign of that year.
