That is a grate song and reminds me of my uncal neil who sadly passed away a few years ago am just sad he didn't gt to see me turn my life around love u neily boy xxxx
the writer of this song was listing to a catholic radio station, A priest saw a Mexican boy carrying his crippled brother on his back, the priest asked the boy, don`t you find him heavy, the rest is history. But i guess this song can mean anything you like. i see 4 dislikes, here`s hoping they don`t get early parole
How music used to be before puppet master Simon cowell an his team of songwriters killed musical creativity by real bands. All he cares about is money not music. Some great new bands out there doing pubs n clubs but will never make it cos they can't dance n mime n be controlled.
Total agreement, a very understated group , never fail to give a good performance, and Alan Clark, what a voice,.....nothing else to say really. Truly excellent.
How this only got to No 3 in the charts in 1969 when it was first released, I'll never know, but fantastic that it got to No 1 when it was re-released, almost 20 years later - a timeless classic - thanks!
@M400fan obviously the best music was written in the late 60's early 70's(though i'm an avid 80's fan as well). Look atb those charts! Amazing! Real music. Today the charts are made by young parents who buy their kids the biggest crap, or record companies buying their own singles to "plug" another talentless halfwit! That's what's wrong! None of my peers listen to that crap.
On topic: this really is a classic , my dad used to play this a lot so it's part of my childhood.
They're awesome! I know I am going to get a lot of grief from Beatles fans, but I think these guys are better because they didn't have the publicity of the fab four but still continued to turn out hits! The Beatles had a massive audience...would some of their songs be as good if they weren't the "Beatles?."
@pds3939 Answer to the question....Yes. The testament to this is the continued air time they get. You shouldn't get any grief for your opinion or preference of music. It's a little like saying the color blue is better than the color red. I applaud your choice, even though I like the Beatles more, because you are your own lead and not following popular opinion (whatever that may be). As for this song, no one nails it like Clarke, especially in the good ole days. In my top 10 of the era.
God I love this song...real musicians playing instruments, words with Real meaning, and have heard this a couple hundred times and the sentiments in this song still make me tear up...what a better world if more people applied the teachings of Christ which is really what this song is saying without making it religion.
These gentlemen enjoy playing this song. You can see it in their expression.and the feelingthey put into the song..absolutely fantastic...ty for posting.
Yes Allan has a great voice but as far as a front man, I don't think so. Not even in the top 10 and not that he suck but every clip I have seen he just stands there, very boring! Best front men
I think for that genre his style suited. Others have been showier of course and imo I would add Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, and Ronnie Van Zant, to that list. I've only had the honor of watching Morrison and Van Zant on film-and to me they are both mesmerizing in their own way. Great front men all and it takes a real gift I think to front a band so memorably.
This song makes me feel more considerate toward others.
There 's also powerful message in a film Trains, Planes and Automobiles. John Candy had been an incredible nuisance to Steve Martin through extreme ineptitude. Martin was glad to complete his journey and be rid of Candy yet in the end when Martin realises that Candy will spend xmas alone his heart softens and he invites Candy home for xmas. These annecdotes help us realise that small sacrifices can help make another persons life better.
Best song ever...if you really listen. It's about about how we should all love one another and help each other. Not something I have seen in my neighbourhood recently and I am trying to change. If you can help one couple slipping up, This is my favorite song...love to your friends, neighbours, strangers...Don't stand around bitching...go find out why you don't like someone, you may be surprised. Go love and support your 'brother' people. Whoever it may be. Hugs. Robyn
If you get real serious about life and helping other people.........this might be the best song ever written and the Hollies of the 70's were the only band to pull it off the way they did. I'm not ready to check out just yet but when I do this may very well be added to my will to have played at my funeral.
You have to be kidding me,These guys are seriously not in the fame,What a friggen insult.Yet there are so many nobodys in there that most of us have never heard of that have been in the lime light for a couple of days.
To me the Hall of fame seems like a JOKE,Perhaps an insult to be in there
There are only TWO thumbs down,Lets face it tho,If a group like the Hollies are not in the FAME and yet some losers that we have never heard of are in there,Then the FAME must be an insult to be in.
the hall of fame is to rock and roll as my grandma is to russian thrash poetry. that is to say it's a joke as far as i can tell. the voters aren't musicians and the acts chosen are suspiciously close to their businesses, i.e. it's rigged. granted, you can't induct *every* great act immediately (there's a 25 year rule anyway), but they should be in. eventually. if not, who cares? VH1's award has more significance imo anyway. at least it's more about rock than the sham in cleveland.
No matter what key the Hollies sing this song in, it is one of the most gut wrenching songs I have ever heard. I have a brother with MS. This song describes how I feel about him perfectly.

LOL!!! That's my Tony. I do have to disagree with you on the hair though. God blessed that man with a gorgeous head of hair. Hmm, I always did have a thing for Martin Short. :)
FYI He dated a beautiful English actress for many years. I only wish I were that lucky. :(
Thanks for the reply! Time to watch that magic moment again. Ah swoooon...
One of many great hits by one of the very best groups of the sixties. This song belongs to Allan Clarkes voice. And like the rest of The Hollies hits, not only the harmony, but also the beat is perfect. Bobby Elliot deserves a lot of credit.
Stuff I learned. It became a hit again in 1988 cuz it was used in a beer commercial. Also, Elton John played the piano on the original recording .......
I agree, how come they're not in the Hall of fame? this is a great group and this is a very very great song, full of meanings, I love it and brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it, today as it did in the past.
The Hollies are awesome the way they harmonize. Did you know that Neil Diamond wrote the song? He always has great lyrics. In this case he was better to pass it to the Hollies. I love Neil too but he can not sing this song.
neil diamond did not write this song; it was written by russell and ______? and acc'g to wiki, the song rights were eventually the subject of a legal dispute. can you imagine??
