  • This was on a juke box in a place I used to hang around at when I was a kid (early 70's) I loved it and used to play it a lot .

  • absolutely

  • This came on the iPod today and it reminds me of Mike.

  • Such a meaningful song. I can't believe how much I can relate to this piece of music... Modern musicians would listen to it and the meaning behind it would go right over their head.

  • Terrific performance of one of my favorite Neil songs!

  • as the decades have gone by I still love this man. he is far ahead of many people. Yet he keeps his life private. I love that, he doesn;t and never has had to get an album in the charts. WOW. big deal eh. he is "old school" from a person who likes a lot of different music..... Go on neil....

  • Simply brilliant..

  • look at that crowd lord thunderin jesus

  • Maper555:

OK??? I know I can do that?

  • this man has entertained for what is now his 6th decade......katy perry lived what 2? live long on sugar mountain neil and keep rockin the free world!!!!!!!!!

  • AWESOME CHANNEL!!!

  • you realize pop music is short for "popular music" and people compare pop to rock because back in the 60's and 70's, rock was pop music

  • Comment removed

  • @carlacostantino That is such an ingorant assumption. You are clumping groups of people with music which are stereotypes. And just because those bands you named aren't your taste of music, doesn't mean they are garbage. In fact that so called garbage managed to do pretty well for themselves. They aren't my cup of tea either but It's not my place to judge as they are certainly a great deal more musically talented than I am and probably yourself, so what gives us the right to judge.

  • I am 100% sure this is from the live aid concert back in 85. I think something like 50 million people watched it...maybe a lot more. That was really great for him to do his performance solo like that.

  • @OnlyForAngels Yeah it was, he came on later in the evening about 7:30 gmt, waited all day for him.

  • I grew up loving this song. My goal was to have every one of Neil's albums. I came close. These 40 year old acoustic songs are my favorites. My introduction as a kid to real music. Great stuff!!

  • TY for posting this!!!! I absolutely love this song....grew up on it many years ago... It is timeless.

  • what year is the video

    live

  • love how he dirties up the harp notes....... 00:55

  • The two most influential American singers since Woody Guthrie, no debate here. Neil Young and Bob Dylan

  • @natsdad300 Not to put too fine a point on your comment but Neil is actually Canadian. But you're certainly correct in stating he's very influential.

  • @natsdad300 Neil is from Canada, just sayin.

  • @TeamLibertyExpress north american

  • Loved going to these concerts in the sixties/seventies, so simple but so great in every way!

  • Young sucks!

  • @falcondriver100 Your a disgrace to humanity. I cannot even imagine who you are and where you grew up, other that probably some 10 year old girl in North Korea. Neil Young is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has so much more talent that anyone else in this world, with some exceptions. Be a troll on some of your justin beaver videos.

  • @xXdontworryaboutit LMAO! Madonna is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame too! What 'talant' it must take to get in eh?

  • @falcondriver100 The difference between Neil Young and Modanna is that he is actual rock, while Modanna is pop. I highly disagree with her acceptance into the R&R HoF, but she had many different talents, including acting. Neil Young sings about the shit that matters in this world. Ohio, Bandit, Rockin' in the Free World, etc. He is a legend that people will be listening to in a couple hundred years from now.

  • @xXdontworryaboutit Without Neil Young pop music as Madonna knows it wouldnt be the same. He is also ledgendary in the sense that he pioneered the grunge which went on to produce kurt cobain one of his generations most applauded artists.

  • @marladogoz Modanna and Young had no influence on each other. Objective or Subjective, Young is one of the greatest singer/songwriters to ever live.

  • Hey? I'm just having fun. To hiyolote:

Dude, you're spot on!! Today's music and talent are sub-par.

Your right about Katy Perry having to bring a circus to entertain

her fans. And good 'Ol Neil up there with his harp and six string.

WTF happened to the music today? I think the music industry took a crap and out came Perry ( Katy), Beiber and the rest of the pro-tooled gang of posers.

  • @Glen3467 you know u can "reply" to people or type @(there name here)

    ...

  • @Glen3467 Good music is still there...you just have to find it. Do a search of Todd Snider. Or James McMurtry.

  • @SargentAnus Yeah. I'll have to check them out.

  • @SargentAnus Yeah thanks. I'll check him out.

  • @Glen3467 listen I'm 19 years old and a huge Neil Young fan, but I'm so sick of al these top comments about today's trash music..there has always been trash out there but there has also always been classics please just put in the effort to look around for them.artists like eddie vedder, ben howard, jose gonzalez, bands like kings of leon, radiohead, the pixies, the arctic monkeys are also all classics if you give them a chance,,,so do some research before you slag my generation off

  • @92baynrw I'm well aware of Eddie Vedder, Radiohead, Pixies and so on. I was talking about the Katy Perry's, Justin Biebier, Jonas bros, Britney Spears of the world. Britney Spears in fact, lips syncs during her shows. It was told to me who's a sessions drummer for a few big names. Lot of the musicians today are pro tooled, touched up, so on. I do listen to today's music closely and like some acts. I don't think today's music will stand the test of time like the performers of the past.

  • @92baynrw And I don't need to lectured by some 19 year old. That's how I feel about today's music. Nothing is going to change my mind. Most of today's acts aren't going to stand the test of time. Most of their lyrics don't have balls, substance or get right to the point like artists Neil Young and John Lennon etc..... Most of the artists I'm talking about, not all Amigo.

  • @Glen3467 well im sorry that you think im too young to converse with, but my point was that there is trash in the charts today and there was trash back then as well, you just wait and see if this generation stands the test of time, because we have come up with great musicians, great bands, great songs, and i dont need some grumpy, old sod lecturing me on my generation of music.

  • @92baynrw Well, if you consider 45 old then that's on you. Yeah, we'll see if this generations music will stand up. I got you're point and I'm a little smarter than you think. And if you read my whole response Amigo, then you will see I said most of the artists not all. Yes, their was crap back then too. I just think yesterdays crap is better than today's music.

  • where is this?

  • I lived on Sweet & Low mountain.

  • I have lived on Sugar Mountain since I was 14. It's been a great ?? years since ;)

  • a great expression of the existential crisis we all face when we realize we ain't a child no more. when youre a kid you can't wait to grow up, now i'm an adult i just want to go back to sugar mountain. the passing of time is one of the saddest aspects of human life, but probably the most necessary too. long live neil young!

  • My all time best Neil Young Song~ joe Sabolick

  • I want to live on sugar mountain !!!!

  • I couldn't have said that better if I tried ;)

  • Ain't that the truth

  • Love ole Neal..

  • LOOK at that crowd! How does Neil do it?

  • @noahstfuboi Then leave and don't come back. Slacker...doh.

  • Here's what it comes down to; GOOD IS GOOD.

Why do kids in 2011 study and play Beatles songs?

will kid in 2050 be studding and playing Katey Perry, "hip hop" or Lady Gaga (and I like gaga)...NO

  • Music isn't what it used to be and I miss it...but I guess everthing has to evolve. Devolve? Neil, CSN, these guys could entertain with style and not a lot of bells and whistles. Glad to still be able to listen.

  • lawl 18 dislikes

  • Saw him play this live at bridge school benefit like 2 weeks ago, hes amazing. Arcade fire, mumford and sons, eddie vedder, dave mathews band, beck, and more. Im only 13 so it was my first concert :) best ever

  • why does katy perry lady gaga have to be brought up in every damn video i watch.. pleasseeee stop with tha stupidness

  • @bassdeadhead YES. I guess people get that self-righteous warm fuzzy feeling from picking on easy targets. It's completely irrelevant and annoying. They also like to pretend that all modern music is billboard pop so that they can more easily condemn it and talk about the good old days. Pretty boring to listen to over and over.

  • A master at his craft.

  • Oh gosh, is this song about DRUGS? :(

  • @fireninjaxxx Depends on how you interpret it. I think its about aging

  • @fireninjaxxx

The song is about how when neil young was 19 he went to a club called 'sugar mountain' with all his friends and his girlfriend. the club didn't allow you to enter if you were over the age of 20, so when neil young turned 20 he wrote this song in his frustration, being unable to go with his girlfriend to the club.

  • Neil is proof that you dont need looks to be successful.

  • @kimdefleppardfan lady gaga is also proof that you don't have ro be pretty to be famous. She looks like a donkey!

  • @jonpaulprice lol true.

  • read FIRST LOVE written by PETRA MARIA SCHEID

    at amazon com

    so close to this song

  • Why does this make me sad?

  • @ZeldaFoxEars

Because its about saying goodbye to the innocence of youth--which we all want back every day. Makes me sad too

  • I Love Sugar

  • So proud of you , younger gen who gets it, rock on

  • Really? OD on maryjane? IMPOSSIBLE!!! Someone needs to get a grip on the facts

  • I have never done drugs in my life. My cousin Timmy overdosed on marijuana and you will all make fun how he ate twinkies and stuff, STFU

  • @freakinstein69 Overdosed on marijuana huh? Better try another line sunshine. You've got about as much chance of that as OD'ing on water.

  • @BDABWOY Actually, you can OD on water..... I'd post an article link but I think that's forbidden

  • neil young rocks the shit out of those lamb chops, no homo.

  • I am 52 and like drugs and neil young

  • o canada

  • @zappadead13 o death to nancy

  • Was dragged to a katey perry concert a while ago, she had to bring a circus to keep that crowd entertained, Old Neil is up there with a 6 string and harp decimating that crowd. What a difference talent makes.

  • @hiyolote You just made my day with that comment. Huge chunk of rock history. HUGE.

  • @atomicpunk48 I'll have to second that ... Timeless ... Talent ...

  • @zorb43 Just saw your reply. Like you said, Timeless and talented. I don't know about you, but the new stuff out there just doesn't cut it for me.

  • @hiyolote SO perfectly WELL put!!!

Neil plucks, bangs and strums his guitar, floats his voice above it and FILLS the air with MAGIC!!!!

  • i agree. music dont mean the same anymore it's all about making money now that's all.

  • brother Neil

  • @hiyolote ...OH sooooooooooooo true my friend ;)

  • @hiyolote Katy Perry is like fast food; Neil Young has nutrition. Katy Perry and practically all pop music lacks that nutrition that has you feel human and solidified, to stimulate -- but instead the easy and tasty lowest-common-denominator sugar. Nothing wrong with it except most are malnourished and feed with nothing else. You can tell with how lost and insipid people are.

  • @scruffyfromki3

Lady Gaga would probably slap you for making that comment. Truth is that musicians of the future won't be trying to emulate Lady Gaga's music, as they do now, and have been for the better part of 4 decades with Niel's music. Lady Gaga, forgettable at best. Neil Young, eternally timeless.

  • @StimulatedMindz Stefanie Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, is one of the most talented songwriters of the past thirty years. You may prefer the music of Neil Young, and other 1960s' greats, but there is a place for many at the table of talent. Too much on youtube I read of derisions of current music, but there are some remarkable artists of the present.

  • @StimulatedMindz lol at the first sentence

  • i can't stop to listen to it

  • I love this song. Neil is a fucking genius.

  • @fazerjt and @toffelinator I think the jokes on you guys...Im pretty sure that all caps was sarcasm.

  • Haha he is wearing a Mistral T-Shirt!!! (makers of windsurfing boards)

  • @scruffyfromki3 bitch you dont know shit fagget go suck lady gagas dick because she does have one

  • @scruffyfromki3 your far to ignorant in order to truly appreciate music. of course lady gage puts on an amazing show its part of "pop" music and the whole industry. Neil Young simply plays his music and for his fans thats all they need because his music speaks for itself. He doesn't need all the flashy displays. Personally i think it is a true sign of GOOD music when the artist can put on such a performance as neil young does and still make the crowd get off just as much asaflamboyantgagaconcert

  • @scruffyfromki3

LOL? And your best friend is Justin Brieber!!!!!

  • @scruffyfromki3 listen to twisted sister... they all dressed up like girls and are way better than lady gaga

    fyi im 13

  • @scruffyfromki3 your musical ignorance is way beyond belief.

  • ...Fuck I Love Neil Young...

  • Neil has a voice like no one else!

  • neil young like nascar. the good ole dayz

  • Great video, I'm a Neil Young fan since way back in middle school when he sang this, lived out too many years with 'the needle and the damage done' (to myself) and trying to pick up the pieces. Thanks for uploading.

  • I'm 9 month and enjoying this music!

  • Well played, harperlarry1 and POCKETGUN, well played, im laughin'.

  • you all should search "The Harrison House Trailer" on youtube.

It was an indie film shot for 600 bucks.... and I'm hoping the trailer becomes an internet sensation, whether for good or bad

  • @noahstfuboi first off; I apologize for telling you to "get a life," I mean, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Secondly, the song isn't about not accepting adulthood, it's about the changes that come with it, especially for those who've just graduated high school. Grad is a big step in growing up, the real world is different and scary, nothing like high school at all; and all Young is trying to say is that when you become an adult, you tend to miss those things that made you a kid...

  • awesome music

  • i am a twinkle in my dads eye and i love Neil Young

  • @noahstfuboi I long to be choldlike, full of wonder and hope. I try not to be childish, however, except for this reply.

  • Im an unborn fetus and I love neil young!

  • Who the hell dislikes this? Go listen to Nickel Back.

  • Hey hey, my my

  • @noahstfuboi

I think a lot of people can relate to this because no one wants to grow up. I just turned 20 and I hate it. I want to stay 19 forever. It's not slacking, it's just when you grow up you often don't have as much fun as you do when you're young. Some stay young inside, and still have fun, but getting old is associated with getting a job, a house, a car, kid(s), mortgage, insurance, bills to pay, etc...

One of peoples top 5 regrets is they wish they had more fun before they died...

  • I remember my older brother playing this tune for me when I turned 20. Great memory of a classic song.

  • God bless Neil Young. Sugar Mountain - beautiful lyrics, beautiful tune. Makes me very happy this song as I can see myself when I was a teenager. NY is always able to find the right words. His way of writing, people can associate their own lives with these images that makes it seem to apply directly to them. Thanks very much to him, Mr Neil Young, a living legend! I hope he will come once again to Germany - You will find me in the concert!

  • Here's a thought for y'all. Try using the internet as the tool it was meant to be instead of a soapbox for your inane rants. Go to Wikipedia and read how the song came about, the meaning behind the lyrics according to Joni Mitchell his friend when he wrote the song upon turning 19. Peace.

  • noahstfuboi, your somewhat twisted....but that's not incurable....I'm hoping for help for you dude!

  • @noahstfuboi You've got some anger management issues. Enjoy the song, or go away. It's that simple.

  • @noahstfuboi man you hit it right on the head didnt ya? you were just too smart not to see right through neil and his "fooling naive reprobates." I'm sure you have an intensely comprehensive understanding of so many things in live that millions will just never grasp......KEEP WALKING, SHEEP.

  • ... i love neil young

  • @noahstfuboi You're certainly entitled to your opinion but why would you call Neil a creep with no integrity when you don't even know the man? There's no need to be so judgemental and insulting....just don't listen to him if you don't his music. Plain and simple.

  • to all of you fucktards that think your so smart why not just listen to the music and shut the fuck up or better yet type in some of shyte you guys listen to.

  • ...and stay out of my bedroom, my penis is my business

  • yikes, you told me...

  • perfect coming of age song.

  • Cool

    Much appreciated seeing this again

  • @noahstfuboi You appear as if you are the real FOOL!

  • The idiot writing about silver spaceships below is probably the same dumfuk who believes revelations in the bible.

  • @noahstfuboi I'd rather hang out with him than your bitter angry ass...

Forever young bitch, forever happy, forever not you....

  • @noahstfuboi Well, it takes a bit of intellect to read between the lines and get the intended meaning out of Neil's lyrics: could it be he is talking about how young people want to be independent but also don't want to lose all the fun things that being a child have to offer????

  • @noahstfuboi fail troll fags everywhere!!

  • @noahstfuboi

That audience of potheads looks to be at least 60,000 strong. End discussion.

  • @noahstfuboi I'm not sure if you're a troll or just an incredibly ignorant simpleton.

  • @noahstfuboi Does that negate the fact that he's a better guitar player/song writer than you will ever be? No. You suck and will never be as good as Neil Young.

  • @noahstfuboi Everyone's fucked up, it's a human trait. Music today just sucks dick. :)

  • Very talented and creative artist. He was way ahead of the time. He is still rocking, better than 99 percent out there. Young will be remembered a hundred years from now.

  • @Freespeech1776 a million years!

  • awesome
