Do you know how to teach a horse how to do the piaffe? I have a loveable foxtrotter who is built for it & we're both learning dressage & loving it, but I would love to teach him to do a piaffe.. :)
Once the horse begins to understand the extension, end the early sessions (leave them EXCITED about it). Usually when you go back for the next session the horse will be itchy to please you and start offering it on their own (DO NOT PRAISE THIS! Only praise it when you ask for it!)
Once the horse begins understanding to extend the leg, the first few will be ugly, begin to ask the horse to SLOWLY extend the leg by using the a SLOW motion to rub the whip along the back of the leg!
@EmpressIllyria I can get my horse to halt and lift- but he strikes quickly (often repeatedly) I cannot get lift AND HOLD for the life of me- any suggestions??
when i tried to teach my horse the spanish walk he didnt lift his lower for leg only the top part of the leg. How do i get the horse to lift the lower leg????
You begin with the whip and a bag of treats. The whip, or improvised one, is used only to direct the motion and extend your arm, always a feather light touch!
You ask for the Jambette with your voice, then touch the knee lightly with the whip. If you get any leg raising you praise and treat. Repeat this process, and usually within a few minutes the horse catches on. SOMETIMES you need to tickle the knee with the whip to stimulate/Annoy the horse to move it.
Always end on a high note, dont linger more than 15 minutes on the exercise, horses have a SHORT attention span! They learn best in short lessons (no more than 15 minutes each) spaced out many times during the day, and week. You also get the best results right before feeding time... when they are very attentitive to you, and all happy for food.
Once you get the leg to raise when the whip touches the knee, begin asking the horse to HOLD the leg up as long as the whip is touching the knee
The second stage takes about a week to really get, you give treats and excessive praise the LONGER the leg stays up. It takes a while to develop these muscles with enough strength to do this in a controlled manner. So focus on this stage until the horse has no problem holding the leg up 15 to 30 seconds. (which is a whole lot longer than you think it is when doing this exercise) the tendency is to want to rush it, but avoid this and allow musclular control to develop properly
Once the horse has the muscular control to do this (Not stamping the foot down, or dropping or DROOPING after 2 seconds, but can actually maintain 15-30) THEN begin asking for the extension by moving the whip from the knee down toward the hoof. Most horses pick this up on the second or third try, espeically if you took a week or so to develop the muscles over the course of maybe 3-5 sessions a day, again less than 15 minutes each) By now its easy for the horse
IF you are patient enough to take the time to develop it slowly as a game, the horse enjoys it (it is a PLAY behavior) and if you take the time to teach the horse restraint and control (rather than the violent stamping or striking of the foreleg) then you will have a very strong base to keep the Jambette stylish and round even through the process of asking for it while gaiting the horse. Slow and steady PAYS OFF in QUALITY.
It is my understanding that the Piaffe endeavors to remain in place without forward movement, and the horse is moving forward, but I agree it is not really on par with the Passage this horse can do, It is sort of a middle ground sort of movement that is not really a true example of one or the other. Because of the movement I called it Passage.
He is moving a bit forward in Piaffe but nothing compared to a lot of the competition Dressage horses. He's doing a lovely Piaffe, nice in a circle, great leg extension out of Piaffe. He's nice up into the bridle and he's not giving a lot of viable cues. Very nice I think and it's in my discipline. Passgae is much more forward motion and from the looks of this guy, no problem.
I completely agree, but of course this horse also performs the Piaffe exceptionally with no forward movement also... and infact has the amazing ability to not only canter on the spot, but even travel slightly backward at the canter.
It is my discipline also, but as a purist and knowing the Piaffe of this horse can remain outstanding in place, I felt it was not a disservice to call it Passage. But this horse's true Passage is also quite brilliant, as evidenced in the Spanish Trot video. :-)

That horse has TRUE self-carriage. Look at how slack the reins were a few times. Very nice overall, loved the little leg extensions too.

That's very adorable. Some of the movements they do in classical dressage are very magnificent, while others are just plain cute! <3
