  • I was actually thinking the same thoughts, that is to say, what have those animals been made to go through to do this stuff.

Everything in life requires training. Humans train to race, run, swim etc. We are not beaten to do this. Take a look at the video with the elephant painting poppies. What do you see in the trainers hand. Yes it's a stick with a spike on the other end....and before you say it, it's not there to simply heard the animal into position. Have we forgotten common sense?.

  • If any of this facts is actually true, you should provide evidence. Without evidence we are just left to trust your word. And, of course, trusting the word of anyone without evidence is simply foolish so, please, provide evidence before making such assertions.

  • but surely if the elephants didn't like it then they wouldn't do it ! cause you can't force an elephant to do something! besides i don't see what is so wrong with an elephant holding a stick with some paint on and moving their trunk...do you?

  • I think you are very much incorrect. I spent time in Thailand at the Royal Elephant Conservation Project, working with the Elephants and Mahouts and helped teach baby elephants how to paint. They loved it! In fact, the elephants get to choose if they want to even paint -- some babies didn't like painting and when they showed displeasure they stopped and the mahouts never had them try it again. Those who did enjoy painting took to it on day one!

  • I cannot believe one can induce a porpoise do jump through a hoop if he's beaten about the head with a baseball bat for not doing so. Why is it you have such a predisposition to believe as you do? And tell us please, how one would go about abusing an elephant to induce it to pick up a paint brush, choose a color, envision an image, and begin to create it. sorry. I think you're in need of serious psychological counseling, lots of love, and abundant compassion.

  • If a piano teacher punches me in the face when I play a wrong note, does that make playing piano bad for me?

  • IF IT HELPS I HAVE WITNESSED THIS GO ON I DONT EXSPEACT PEOPLE TO BELIEVE ME BUT IT IS HERIFFIC WHAT GO'S ON AND SADLY SEEING IS BELIEVING! CHECK OUT THE OTHER ELEPHANT LADY FILMS AND THERE IS ONE THAT SHOWS THE TRAINING THAT TAKES PLACE.

  • Kids who are tortured and abused as the grow up do not always become aggressive. They often become submissive. Animals live off of insitinct as much as thought. If they are taught from the time they are born that if they act out or rebel against their trainers, that they get beat and abused, then they learn not to express those attitudes. Animals all over the world are abused and tortured without rebelling against it cuz it is all they know. Animals can be brain washed as much as humans.

  • Is their any solid proof that the elephants are beaten to be able to do this?

  • "it takes fear to make them position a paintbrush so precisely"

    complete bullshit

either they can or they can not. if they were physical unable no amount of pain could make them do it, so they do have the ability. all that is needed is some training and you can train any animal (humans included) without any form of punishment simply by positive reinforcement through rewards. the fact that they're painting is no evidence for abuse. (cont.)

  • @JustACopyCat

    (cont.)

training through positive reinforcement causes no distress quite the opposite. the most psychological damage in captivity is caused by boredom. they need something to do and why not painting.

you're doing them no favor by trying to stop their food income especially if you have no evidence for abuse and you are doing this because of flawed assumptions

  • "Where is your evidence?"

Even if they are trained (`tortured'?) to paint, that is a noble art! Better than made to beg on hot streets.

And do we know how they are looked after, once they earn their keep?

  • before, I AM AN ELEPHANT! and i know how u feel.. are you too an elephant?? oh come on! lets get to be real.. i am hungry.. i have to work. where is my painting brush?

  • evidence: do not watrch the gallery if your "soft" :/

i found those infos after investigate the elephant paintings

google for Activists Denounce Thailand's Elephant "Crushing" Ritual

  • @AfricanResist

the camps in which the elephants are painting are rescue camps, the crushing ritual is performed to tame elephants. so that is not what is happening in these camps because the elephants are already tame when rescued.

they save them from starving and abuse and the painting is done to raise money to keep the camps and elephants alive.

what you present is no evidence for the case the video creator made. the video is full of false assumptions

  • Liking the arts isn't limited to just humans. Birds like music, and dance to its rhythm. Elephants in the wild have been known to draw in sand.

  • Very well put. Boycott this is nothing more than elephant abuse

  • oh my gosh. how stupid people can be ... do u think the elephants have a choice for what they're doing?! of course they don't, they went through torture for such a long time (what the normal tourist would never see in elephants circuses or similar), that they realized they would have to do, what humans want them to - because they're so smart. they broke them and most of the elephants suffered for such a long time, not just in physical, but mostly in psychical pain,

  • Do you have PROOF that these animals are being tortured into doing this? How is this different from training sea lions or whales to do tricks? Do you find that cruel as well? Or trained horses? Or trained big cats?

  • the humans DO NOT have a natural ability to read (try to put a few humans in a jungle when they are born) . The schools and books should be forbidden. A human reading is unnatural.

    Signed: an elephant

  • I agree , animals should just be left alone , they dont hurt us so why should we hurt them.

  • Where is your evidence?

  • thats rediclous. Animals who are abused and tortured are scared of people and/or aggressive. If those elephants are being abused it would be unsafe for them to be in crowds of people, they would not be friendly and tame like they are. animals are much smarter than most people think, and enjoy the company of humans. these elephants wouldn't be painting of they didn't like it

  • @DannaKragt do you think also that abused kids and wives and other people should be also agressive and affraid of crowds and other people?

  • Come on people this kind of circus needs to end. Do some research and spend your tourist money supporting mahout families who endeavour to let their elephants spend the rest of their days in more natural surroundings. Elephants are not solitary creatures and should not be seen in circuses like these. I dare you to make a difference to thne lives of thai elephants and their mahout families - you will be rewarded far than you could begin to imagine

  • Its hard to get an elephant to do exactly what you want without them wanting to do it, they do retaliate when really unhappy as we all know

  • Attention : fundamentalist / creationist alert !!! this is the subject of documentaries elsewhere .. which incorporate an appreciation of the works of other artists by the elephants.

The Bible brainwashed cannot see how this can be ! lol

  • I don't understand where you get your evidence from. You have made an opinion that if an elelphant can paint and paint well it is only been done through cruelty. So are you saying that any animal that can do a trick or perform a task is doing it because it has been abused? Please back up your claims with good evidence before posting them on the web.

  • Thank you for alerting everyone to this abuse!

  • i wonder where you are getting your information from.elephants are very curious creatures with complex social and intelectual needs. you cannot just "put them out to pasture" and expect a herd to bond. elephants are creative, they get bored, some elephants( wild and captive) have been observed drawing designs in the dirt with sticks. this is how the idea sprang about, to give them some colors to work with.

  • Please do some research - people are far better off spending their hard earned tourist money seeing elephants in more natural environments. There are plenty of organisations in Thailand who offer financial support to mahout families to allow their elephants to be taken off chains and form family bonds and live the rest of their lives in a more natural settings. Join in supporting these parks and have fun interacting socially with elephants and the local mahout families.

  • dont forget how elephants are sacred in that region

THEY ARE GODS FOR THOSE PEOPLE

soh youre saying not to ride a horse aswell

or making your dog give you his paw

    think about it

  • And are dogs and horses endangered animals? Are elephants highly bred? Go and see elephants spend your money how you choose but stop and think would it not be better to support elephants and their mahout familes trying to get elephants back in to a more natural environment - please let me know what you think?

  • To gesnarfel, amosholford111, dcsuga:

PEACE AND BLESSINGS TO YOU AND YOURS!

  • I think you should go and stop the poaching with is far more abusive to me!

  • If you are so bold as to choose one abuse over another as one we should pay more attention to, those of us who truly care about the mistreatment of any animal, no matter what type of animal and what the abuse entails, would have to say that your unbalanced support is not doing the animals any good. I'm sure the elephants wouldn't choose anything but to be treated like the beautiful, caring , intelligent creatures that they are. Thanks for trying though.

  • I just want you to spell correctly. When you are trying to make a point, the strength of your argument is weakened when the reader is reading "organisations" throughout your video response. Organizations is the correct spelling.

  • "Organisations" is the European English spelling of "Organizations". Please refer to the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics as an example of that spelling. Other variations are tyre and tire, colour and color, advertise and avertize to name but a few. Please feel few free to flog yourself for arrogance.

  • Oh no - please feel free to not be such an ignorant ass. An elementary school student could have picked out that mistake. Congratulations! Thank you so much for the references also - big help. Please refer to "The Directional Guide For Idiots Who Should Stay Out of Blogs That Don't Need Their Ridiculous Comments." Thanks.

  • I am particularly annoyed with anyone who can't spell correctly when boasting an important message. What annoys me even more? I'd love to share that with you:someone who would be so ignorant as to pick the 's' out of that message rather than concentrating on the support that these abused elephants need. Your need for the message to be gramatically correct makes you look like a bigger moron than anyone you are trying to place blame on. Great input! I'm sure the elephants appreciate it.

  • Your annoyance doesn't matter, people always seem to think that they are so important in this world, gramatically correct or not who cares I think everyone understood the message. I am here to tell you GET OVER YOURSELF and find more important things to do..... go volunteer in your community rather than sit on your computer all day, just because your life is out of control doesn't mean you need to compensate by being a blog nazi.

  • Exactly! Well put.

  • However, I can see that these elephants appear to be abused with a special technique where they are pinched behind the ear off camera. I retract the statements below as i was fooled too. If you look at the "elephant corporate commision" painting video, at 42 seconds, the trainer picks up a stick. The elephant hesitates and you can see that shes in pain. The trainer in thailand abuse them. The end. see thaifineart, the user with that video.

  • Ruined! I would not abuse an elephant to get it to paint. Good learning does not come from torture. The elephants are not being whipped, it appears. They need SOMETHING to do, so they could enjoy their lives. The fact that you dont seem to like what they're doing tells me if we could teach all animals the arts, their intrinsic value like in these videos could be more evident to those who think animals are disposable or have no souls. The elephant can show us something about the value in life.

  • How is it immoral to teach an elephant to paint? A famous artist merely came up with the concept that an elephant should give painting a try. It took 5 years to train one to paint well. And that elephant (Hong) also was trained by another artist from Britain. To me, the elephant appear to enjoy painting, because it is an outlet of self expression. Is it wrong to give the promethian flame of art to the elephant? I think not. For any western artist to get involved, if abuse occured, their rep is..

  • Enigreg: all good questions. All visitors should ask these questions before going there and paying them, which supports any cruelty that goes on behind the scenes. Very astute of you.

  • "Surely"? You've based this entire video on a that? You ought to be ashamed of yourself! If you had bothered to learn the history of the painting elephants, about the artists who came to teach them and their surprising abilities, if had just done a tiniest bit of research before you put this junk on Youtube! DO YOU HAVE ANY EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE ABUSED? Do something more for them, like go and learn to teach an elephant to paint, but don't slander the efforts of good people without any evidence.

  • Jeez, Misia, why are you so quick to anger when so many people say the same thing: that making elephants paint is wrong. Have YOU been there, behind the scenes, when the babies are torn crying from their mothers by greedy humans just so they can be trained to make paintings for stupid tourists? Why are you so against criticism of this inhumane practice? Is there something in it for you? Do you get a percentage of the profits? No one needs "evidence" to see that it's unnatural and unethical.

  • unnatural? yes. unethical not necessarily.

We teach many animals to do a lot of things through reward and Love. If this is NOT the case here. It definitely should not be done. If on the other hand it is cruelty being used. This is Sad most indeed . We have many intelligent creatures that to a degree could be brought out if done properly that would give us a better understanding as our role as their protectors from ourselves and learn an appreciation we would have never known. Shalom....

  • (4) I think it is disgusting to make these elephants preform for tourists. If exotic world gifts truely believe this camp is only for rescued elephants and wont lead to further elephant exploitation they need to educate themselves more to the plight of thailand elephants.

  • (3) Another of my postings: If this camp only uses rescued elephants what are the future plans for the use of the babies that will be produced? Even a baby elephant born in captivity is wild and requires training. What methods does this camp use?The usual 7 days of torture tied up in a cage prodded by sharp instruments, denied water and food until their spirit breaks or the more labour intensive +ve reinforcement method?I certainly would not be supporting any venture until I knew these answers.

  • (2) This is one of my posting to exotic world gifts: As a company the 'reward good practices and stop cruel practises' I hope you have researched your facts well. If not you are misguided if you havent realised you are potentially creating a market for furter elephant exploitation. If education and employment in non elephant based activites is what you have assessed as being needed - why arent you focusing your efforts in this area.

  • (1)Ive posted comments on the exotic world gifts elephant painting site. They have been deleted reappeared and then some deleted again. I have been careful to give them the benefit of the doubt, wanting to believe that they were misguided, about the abuse that occurs. But these deletions and the fact that they havent answered the email I sent are making me think otherwise. I still havent got an answer to my questions. I believe they may be profiting at the expense of elephants. Buyer Beware

  • Thank you for posting this video. Whether rescued from logging, begging or just painting at a camp, these elephants have been tortured through phaajan. The babies are torn from their mothers and confined, beaten and deprived of food, water and sleep until they can no longer resist. Please do not visit these camps or buy elephant art that comes from them.

Help Thai Elephants will teach you about what really happens.

  • Elephants do not naturally paint!

They are put through cruel training practices that force them to do man's bidding.

People who buy these paintings or pay to see them done are supporting the separation of babies from their mothers, and the unnatural lives they will be forced to live for as long as the owners can make money from them.

Please do not support this and be part of the problem.

  • i feel strongly on this matter, as i am an animal lover myself. thank you for posting this video of awareness, and thank you for telling everyone else. i will tell people to watch this video. the elephant painting made me very, very sad. so sad that i cried

  • Thankyou lotozzi. Generally elephants are revered in Thailand. So much infact that this week, during Wesak, they are given the privilege of carrying the relics of Buddha to temples.

  • STOP the exploitation of these beautiful creatures.

It needs to be recognized that this baby elephant exploitation extravaganza that Exotic World Gifts is creating, is harmful and cruel.

  • Disgustingly, there is lots of money in paintings by elephants. Exotic World Gifts makes it sound like this is a harmless activity that the elephants enjoy doing. People buy into this if they don't know the real behind-the-scenes story.

Now in Thailand, many owners of baby elephants are seeing a big money-making opportunity not realizing the cruel training methods that are used to get the animal to perform this activity.
