  • i have the original one too. i like it alot better then the dubbed.

  • Thanks! I did get the original version from Netflix yesterday, so I'm gonna order the US version

  • Whoever decided to over-dub Albert Sharpe's original lines should be drawn and quartered. An absolute travesty.

Does anyone know how to get an original copy on DVD. I'm an American who as a child (and still to this day) couldn't understand half of the things he said.....and I LIKE IT THAT WAY!!! Give me the original version ANY day.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, and Erin go Bragh

  • @schizlor According to Wikipedia, the Region 1 US/Canada DVD contains the original, while the Region 2 PAL uses the dubbed version.

  • I saw this when I was little , and when I watched it the first time I just had this scared and uncomfortable feeling towards the king and his people. I remember really emotionally their in the movie and was really wanting the old man to get what he wanted.

  • They made a pigs ear with the dubbing, should have left things be....by the way,Darby O Gill,is played by Jimmy O Dea....

  • Turn this down and play Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick while watching. :D Goes so well with it.

  • @charlottesharpeness

Walt Disney was initially hoping to cast Barry Fitzgerald in the dual roles of Darby O'Gill and King Brian. Fitzgerald reportedly declined due to his advanced age (although his eventual replacement as Darby, Albert Sharpe, was three years his senior). Disney regretted the loss of Fitzgerald in the lead role, and blamed the film's disappointing box-office performance partly on this loss.

    From IMDB

  • I have an english dvd of this movie, but STILL with it's original sound :) Like it!

  • Hi, i watched this film when i was a lot younger, hehe i am 29. But i never knew exactly how the old man asked the fourt wish. The film i watched was translated in spanish. so i think there was a word play thing that was obiously missing on the translation. So, can anyone tell me please how he got his involuntary fourth wish?. Or it was a gifth from the king?.

  • @Dhanus44 When Darby is being taken away in the Death Coach, King Brian appears inside to bid him farewell, saying "we've had great sport together." While Darby is reminiscing, King Brian off-handedly remarks, "I wish I could go with you all the way" (to the coach's destination, presumably the afterlife). Without thinking, Darby says, "I wish you could, too." This constitutes his fourth wish.

  • @trivialord Thanks for replying =), so i guess the secret was to make Darby say the phrase "i wish" so The King Brian could use the magic.

  • @Dhanus44

    Yep.

    And you're welcome.

  • i agree wid rallyretro we had it on tape way before i was born nd i got old so we brought the DVD nd as soon as the started speaking im like NOOO

  • i remember watching this when i was younger...xXx

  • For you trivia buffs out there, you may not know that Walt Disney originally wanted Barry Fitzgerald for the role of Darby O'Gill. Fitzgerald turned down the offer because by the time the film was made he already was too old and frail to be able to do it. At his recommendation Disney called Albert Sharpe out of retirement to play the part of Darby O'Gill. It became Mr. Sharpe's most memorable role.

  • @GBXXXX Incorrect Trivia.!Albert Sharpe was seen by Walt Disney 12 years prior to the making of Darby Ogill and the Little People when Albert Sharpe was on Broadway in a musical of "Finians rainbow".Walt Disney had created Darby ogill with the intention of Albert Sharpe playing Darby.

  • I absolutely love this film but this turns my stomach. I HATE the English dubbed version of the film :-( Anglicised versions of the Irish words,l different dialect, etc etc

  • @rallyretro not exactly sure what you mean,Ènglish dubbed version`this is a Walt Disney movie,it wasn`t made in Gaelic.

  • @misterwibbles This is an alternate version of the soundtrack which uses dubbed dialogue by actors with "easier to understand" accents. In the original audio track, there are also several snippets of real Gaelic dialogue among the leprechauns which are translated into English in this version. I suppose it was done for the benefit of the audience, but it really takes a lot of the fun out of the movie, in my opinion.

  • Thank God I own the original...

  • When I was younger, I noticed how some of the characters (especially Darby and King Brian) sounded different from the one in the video rental store when I saw it on TV. This bothered me and I always said how "people talk different" in the TV one. I did not know why until I was older and found out how companies sometimes re-dub for different releases.

  • @trivialord

I completely agree. Ruined it for me.

  • @rallyretro yea like in the original he counts to 4 in Gaelic

  • @rallyretro

    Me too! Ruined the film!

  • meant king not love

  • love Brian Connors has been my dancing inspiration since childhood

  • Nope....late 1950s.

  • amazing stuff,i remember watching this as a kid, still gets me today,The fox chase and its music and dancing are hard to beat in cinematography, early 70´s i believe.
