  • I love his voice hes always overly excited

  • he even designed a rocket jump and 3x fast jump toural this is assome

  • This guy is a kinda einstein of game physics and programming.. and looks more like stephen hawking lolz.

  • fucking genius!!!!! Go John!!!!!!!!

  • thank you John, man you made me play your games since 15 years, man you influenced my life that much. thank you for quakelive also....

  • man people laugh at me because i play quake 3 since 10 years

  • hes a genius.

  • John Carmack is a fps god

  • Omg! 80-90 fov... JUCK!

  • its higher than that, maybe 95, still yuck

  • its only spectator view :)

  • greetings from Russia) Carmack is a genius

  • John Carmack is a weird funny genius little man child

  • "Rakaka" sucks, that channel sucks hard, but this review is ftw.

  • john carmack is a hardcore programmer.

  • he's badass !!!!

  • @DrSanchez666 AMEN!

  • @DrSanchez666 and a hardcore gamer ID SOFTWARE IS THE BEST GAME CORPERATION

  • @DrSanchez666 looks like an angry nerd

  • @DrSanchez666 very good comment =D

  • john carmack probably is really good at math

  • @dorkforceti83 I know one of the functions in Quake 3 uses the Newton method for approximating inverse square roots. It completely bypasses slower math operations (such as division) so it's several times faster than if you were to just use 1/sqrt(x)

  • john carmack is a freaking genious

  • thank you for quake and quake live

  • i want to grow up and be just like him.

He dropped freakin doom. enough said

  • hes a programming god, one of the people that made me become a game programmer

  • game programming easy?

  • I've been doing it couple of years, did it at University & got into the industry ,its very heavy on mathematics when your learning , but thats really if your doing the physics on the game which you most the time use an engine to cover it but you have to know the logic on how it works. I'd say its not really something you can master because its always developing.

Overall it was very stressfull learning in 1st year but gradually got easier

  • Trying to aim for position in Nintendo

  • No thank you, nintendo has already butchered Wolfenstein 3D on the SNES, and ID Software HATES them for that.

Do you want Nintendo to butcher the latest ID Software games? They'll go from Mature, well made games, into little kids games with HORRIBLE controls!

  • yeah!

Even do the was was filled with swatsika's XD, there is a bible game :D

  • Yeah, Im thinking about going to college for computer science or something along those lines. Can do anything with that. Work at Nasa or maybe if Im lucky enough I can work at Id, lol.

  • Haha i have leaked the doom 3 Alpha.....

Again .... with revived unused monsters and 28 new levels based on the final version!

  • that's why I'm curious for rage. it takes the knowledge of previously done games, and expand on it with racing/adventure elements (without going too overthetop hopefully). Expect quality from id.

  • contrary to other programmers and develpers (esp of this generation) who have it presented on a golden platter. This guy was part of the 3D evolution. Lots of experience. He's like an experienced jazz-player. they can do stuff others can't. id games have their own style/look.

  • quake 3 had some nice designed fanmade levels, some really minimalistic and tron-like. im curious if quake live uses some of these.

  • I wish I had Carmack's programming skills. The guy is so insane!

  • carmack is the most influential person in gaming age ever.

he created the most competitive game (Quake3), i still remember when i watched the finals live and stuff.

  • John Carmack is the new word gaming 4ever!

  • Caramack and Romero are just completely poles apart.... No wonder they split up!

  • Realy this is like a browser based quake 3 correct?

  • my hero..

  • mine too...

  • I heard he has asperger's syndrome so it's a good thing he's making video games, otherwise he might have ended up a serial killer :-D

  • Well it looks like he's kicked it in the ass then for I wouldn't of known that he did.

  • Not really.

He still has non existant people skills and ultimately this is why nobody of quality will work for him anymore. (You can only run people into the ground without any thought to the effect it will have on them for so long before they all abandon you.)

  • asperger's syndrome whats this mean???

  • Autism spectrum disorder.

And not all people with Asperger's syndrome or autism become serial killers.

  • Just hearing his voice once and reading Masters of Doom give that impression.

  • look at that mic its soo small

  • Quake can cause serious addiction.

  • i agree that John Carmack is a a god of programming also hedio kojema(metal gear solid series) is a god

  • Quake 3 can never die...NEVER!!!!

  • @quadman0 Just like Quakeworld. We will still be playing it. Even if plenty of us are 30+ yrs old. This is not Britney Spears, QUake don't diminish during few years :D

I just want to tell something, I think it's for all of us here:

    Thanx John. We love you.

  • this guy is a revolutionary figure in the world of gaming and it almost seems like he doesn't even care. he just likes to program, and he likes showing the cool programming things he's found to anyone else who wants to see them. I'd be willing to bet that anybody who asked (nicely) about his programming "baby" would get a real answer and possibly even shown source code, as opposed to just being turned away.

  • очень кульный чел этот Кармак. Никакие Джеваты и Гейбы не сравнятся

  • The keynote was KINDA interesting? Maybe if you could understand English, you stupid spic, you might have grasped the gravity of what he had to say.

  • Every Quake game is amazing, with the exception of #4.

  • sweet interview =) doesn't carmac plays in some tournaments somtimes?

  • Nah, he's not much of a gamer. Carmack prefers to program engines and mess around with rocketry than play games. Romero, on the other hand, plays games all the time. He goes to tournaments and plays World of Warcraft.

  • He plays WoW? Hehe, maybe we'll never see a really kickass Romero game. There is time yet...

  • Well, he's working on a yet un-named MMORPG, so, maybe.

  • ahh :) thanks for the answer :)

  • Yeah right, Daikatana certainly proved that over Quake didn't it????

  • Eh...Daikatana is really only considered so bad because it took so long to make, so it didn't live up to any standards. For ANYONE to take an advertisement that flat out says "John Romero Is Going To Make You His Bitch", the game has to be the FPS equivalent of Super Mario Bros. 3, which Daikatana was not. If we look at Daikatana as if it wasn't made by Romero and didn't take so long to make, I'd say it's a solid 3/5 in my opinion. Not good, but not awful. That's just me, though.

  • Fucking awesome interview. These ID peoples really know how to create a great conversassions and interviews - cheers.

  • every time i do a programming assignemnt for my classes I get depressed knowing this guy is a fkn programming god

  • yeah i know!

  • don't worry, I program like a 5-year old girl LOL

  • question: and who gets all the money?

  • (Tetrix03): the master himself: Carmack lol

  • Very hard working guy. I heard he used to code 80 hours a week during the crunch days with id on Doom and Quake.

  • I'm loosing my faculties...mmm

  • how do YOU feel...

oh. quakecon is always a great time for US...

    LOL

split personality. hes such a media goodyboy whorebag

  • I dont know how ID does it.

They are working on Quake Live, Wolfenstien, Doom 4, Doom 2 RPG, Wolfenstien RPG, and Rage.

    They're working their ass's off.

  • And don't forget about Armadillo airspace =p

  • no shit. i bet their wokrking up a sweat trying to put together those games.

  • It's interesting to me that someone would interview John Carmack with these kinds of questions. Not that the questions are bad, just that anyone working at id would be able to answer them. It is kind of John Carmack to take the time to interact with the community though.

  • the map in the background.. q3tourney7 hehehe I love that map

  • this guy is a God-I would blow him !

  • that guy is the God!!!

Read the Masters of Doom! best book ever

  • Yes. I loved that book. Carmack is a programming genius, and developed some of the most awesome game engines. I proudly say the Quake Series stands to be the best fps series I have played.

  • John carmack is a programming genius, but unfortunately, he's not God. Shigeru Miyamoto is the God.

  • Ken Kutaragi=godlike

    Hideo Kojima= godlike

  • god-like, I agree, but not quite the god himself. ;)

  • ..then again, I like Carmack talk next-gen (voxel octrees, more texture mem/storage, GPU/processors 10x faster, mild form of raytrace combined with traditional rasterization etc)..

  • Quake live is nice (incl. marketing/sponsering), but I much rather want id to keep focus on next-gen technology instead of older IPs.

  • As Carmack said, only 10% of their staff is working on Quake Live. Its main goal is probably just to build a bigger fanbase for id Software's games to be able to create even better next-gen stuff.

  • im so glad id didnt listen to the cpm crowd and turn QL into some weakass cpm game...that would have turned ALOT of ppl off to it if they had.

  • this sounds _really_ promising and good :)

    gief meh quake life!

  • so thats where he was from! Sweden.

I was right next to Carmack watching, and I heard the interviewers accent, and got to wondering. I wanted to run past the camera "QUAKECON!" but I pansied out lol.

  • haha, would've been cool: "AHHHH QUAAAAKECOOOON's DA BEESTEST *hic*" :D

  • Carmack owns!

  • sweet
