@dorkforceti83 I know one of the functions in Quake 3 uses the Newton method for approximating inverse square roots. It completely bypasses slower math operations (such as division) so it's several times faster than if you were to just use 1/sqrt(x)
I've been doing it couple of years, did it at University & got into the industry ,its very heavy on mathematics when your learning , but thats really if your doing the physics on the game which you most the time use an engine to cover it but you have to know the logic on how it works. I'd say its not really something you can master because its always developing.
Overall it was very stressfull learning in 1st year but gradually got easier
Yeah, Im thinking about going to college for computer science or something along those lines. Can do anything with that. Work at Nasa or maybe if Im lucky enough I can work at Id, lol.
that's why I'm curious for rage. it takes the knowledge of previously done games, and expand on it with racing/adventure elements (without going too overthetop hopefully). Expect quality from id.
contrary to other programmers and develpers (esp of this generation) who have it presented on a golden platter. This guy was part of the 3D evolution. Lots of experience. He's like an experienced jazz-player. they can do stuff others can't. id games have their own style/look.
He still has non existant people skills and ultimately this is why nobody of quality will work for him anymore. (You can only run people into the ground without any thought to the effect it will have on them for so long before they all abandon you.)
@quadman0 Just like Quakeworld. We will still be playing it. Even if plenty of us are 30+ yrs old. This is not Britney Spears, QUake don't diminish during few years :D
I just want to tell something, I think it's for all of us here:
this guy is a revolutionary figure in the world of gaming and it almost seems like he doesn't even care. he just likes to program, and he likes showing the cool programming things he's found to anyone else who wants to see them. I'd be willing to bet that anybody who asked (nicely) about his programming "baby" would get a real answer and possibly even shown source code, as opposed to just being turned away.
Nah, he's not much of a gamer. Carmack prefers to program engines and mess around with rocketry than play games. Romero, on the other hand, plays games all the time. He goes to tournaments and plays World of Warcraft.
Eh...Daikatana is really only considered so bad because it took so long to make, so it didn't live up to any standards. For ANYONE to take an advertisement that flat out says "John Romero Is Going To Make You His Bitch", the game has to be the FPS equivalent of Super Mario Bros. 3, which Daikatana was not. If we look at Daikatana as if it wasn't made by Romero and didn't take so long to make, I'd say it's a solid 3/5 in my opinion. Not good, but not awful. That's just me, though.
It's interesting to me that someone would interview John Carmack with these kinds of questions. Not that the questions are bad, just that anyone working at id would be able to answer them. It is kind of John Carmack to take the time to interact with the community though.
call me stupid (thumb me down) but i hope some day game companies (and microsoft) whoever, after they make millions (like rockstar), realise what is going on in the world, and that they donate some to good causes. there's too much suffering in the world, esp. poverty. even if they donate behind the scenes. you don't know what hunger/fear is until you experience it yourself. this is a standalone comment that doesn't need a response.
Yes. I loved that book. Carmack is a programming genius, and developed some of the most awesome game engines. I proudly say the Quake Series stands to be the best fps series I have played.
..then again, I like Carmack talk next-gen (voxel octrees, more texture mem/storage, GPU/processors 10x faster, mild form of raytrace combined with traditional rasterization etc)..
As Carmack said, only 10% of their staff is working on Quake Live. Its main goal is probably just to build a bigger fanbase for id Software's games to be able to create even better next-gen stuff.
I was right next to Carmack watching, and I heard the interviewers accent, and got to wondering. I wanted to run past the camera "QUAKECON!" but I pansied out lol.
I love his voice hes always overly excited

MrArcadium 2 years ago
No thank you, nintendo has already butchered Wolfenstein 3D on the SNES, and ID Software HATES them for that.
Do you want Nintendo to butcher the latest ID Software games? They'll go from Mature, well made games, into little kids games with HORRIBLE controls!
